Higurashi was mostly about his characters, it's a very characters centric tale and i think R07 did a really good job with them, some storylines where quite excellent (Shion story was heartbreaking)

It's not perfect, it has a silly, but at least satisfying, conclusion and some bad writing/very repetitive stuffs, but it's a very pleasant journey in the end.

But for me, I prefer higurashi alot more. I just didn't feel for Umineko's characters. I never got into the meta thing. just wasn't something I liked.

You don't have first person story telling so you can exactly know everything about the characters, because in the end after killing people they are good an pure, they tell you themselves.

Keiichi was one of the main keys in punching the shit out of fate, Battler just kind of fights it at the start, then quietly accepts that this is the way things are.

Granted, he does this because nearly everything we've seen in merely a goddamn story within the story, so from the beginning there was no hope, but whatever.
