Cultural festivals are interesting, though they are sadly rather lacking in much of the US.

Where we DO have them though, they rule. Some towns with strong German ethnicity still do Oktoberfest and do it damn well, and I attend the Greek Independence Day parade in Greektown, Detroit, every year. Not much to look at, unless you like those outrageous Zorba outfits, but the guys who rock out on those bouzouki's are fucking insane (pic related.) They strum the strings in both directions, and the mad beats they get up to is fucking wild.

Then we retreat to the closest Greek Orthodox church, where the Uzo flows and everybody gets very, very hammered. Traditional Greek dances come in two kinds; the 'group' kind that are specifically designed to knock entire crowds of drunk people on their asses in a hilarious fashion, and the "Zorba the Greek" kind where people flip the fuck out.

Then you get to hit on all the hot Greek girls because you have the right last name for their conservative parents to tolerate you.

I've been to a few with my girlfriend.

My town does Oktoberfest, Mardigras, a local seafood/music festival, and two biker rallies each year. Also, there is a monthly "lets do something with the downtown area" street fair thing.

Attend the Gion festival every summer in Kyoto. Lots of shit going on during the whole thing.
