/jp/ do you own anime/movie laser disks?
what was the point in owning them?
In America they were totally ignored, so i never saw one till now.

What kind of faggot still watches anime in this day?
マジキモ

LDs are pretty cool, too bad they were ignored even more in Europe. I think there's lots of old anime that was only released on LD?

OP is confirmed for being
1) Underaged
2) Idiot for watching VCR tapes
3) Fag because this belongs in /a/ (anime), /tv/ or /g/ (laserdisk vs. VCR comparison)

Wiki Laserdisks. They were only ignored by people who didn't care about video or audio quality. I have about 300 of them.

A friend of mine got a nice quality LD player from the free section of craigslist. When we went to Akiba in Japan later that year we found a box that had 10yen (as in 10cents a piece!) old LDs of classic animes. He also has this Eva LD boxset with fig/plush/artbook.

>> No.6851490

The point of owning them was to throw the money around for higher quality video if you could afford it back in the day (it was very expensive). I have a player and some anime myself. It's cool.

>> No.6851528

This was before I got into anime but I remember watching Tom and Jerry cartoons on them.

My dad had a whole bunch of these and was an early videophile so this makes sense. I think he still has a some rare criterions in his collection.

There was nothing better available to the consumer than LD in the early to mid 90s. If you can get your hands on some older NewType magazines from that era you will find them filled with advertisements listing VHS and LD releases for just about any anime title of the time.

I was finishing up high school during this time and starting college so I didn't have a lot of money to blow on LDs. I did manage to snag the Record of Lodoss War complete box set for about $300 when the anime store was closing down at the local university.

I still consider it one of the best anime related purchases that I ever made.

You know what I loved about Lazerdiscks? when you fast forward them, they're like a combination of today's DVDs and VHS fast forwarding. No "skipping", and no static fuzz over the image while zooming ahead. That was cool.

>> No.6852421

My friend is obsessed with laser disc. He continues to purchase discs and players, and prefers watching movies on laser disc over DVD. I think it's pretty silly.

>> No.6852423

to be honest, i didn't even know such thing existed untill like month ago or so. i feel like some kinda uneducated alien.

There's plenty of laserdisc stuff in America.

>> No.6853885

It's laserdisc. Disks aren't read by a laser.

I have about 40 of them of American movies, Japanese anime, and American subtitled anime. I have the non-special edition widescreen THX Star Wars movies.

I have a few. I'm also quite proud of the fact that I have one of the best players in the world (imported Pioneer HLD-X9), capable of playing 1080i HD LDs with the proper MUSE hi-vision decoder, which I also have. I'll never get rid of them.

I also have a D-Theater capable 1080i DVHS setup, and the best Toshiba HD DVD player... Just because dead formats have to be admired by someone, right?
