6758203 No.6758203 [Reply] [Original]

Seeing the amount of "NO JUST NO", "RYUKISHI WHY ARE YOU SUCH A SHITTY WRITER", and "UMINEKO WAS A TRAINWRECK THROUGH AND THROUGH" recently concerning Umineko, here is a question for /jp/:

How would YOU rewrite Umineko? You are now head of 07th Expansion, and Ryukishi is in fact your cat. Let the ideas flow. You could rework the entire series to fit smoothly with the ending. You could throw out Chiru altogether. Big or small changes, they're all valid.

To start things off with the more obvious ones:

Format: Suggested edit (Why Ryukishi is not glorious and had to be edited)

-DID meido is not literal. Beatrice is at the most be Shannon's escapist fantasy self (Everybody hates DID. Umineko could work just as well without it. Yasu was doing pretty well with the imaginary friends. Removed) .
-Toya never comes to be. Ikuko finds a traumatized, near-dead Battler who suppresses his guilty memories surrounding Rokkenjima (same with DID, bad in general. Toya remembers an awful lot about everything before the murders for being supposedly amnesiac. It's not unbelievable for someone to suppress guilty/traumatic memories, unlike "total" amnesia)
-Add the item "Yasu's diary" (ep. 1-4 are partially about Battler discovering Beatrice/Yasu/Shannon's true self/heart. Ange comes to understand Maria through her diary. Battler could do likewise)

More clues to make the mystery actually solvable between 1-4.

Less garbage about love. The only people who give a shit about that are the 15-year old girls who post on Animesuki.

I would include whatever R07 had planned to do with "Land of the Golden Witch", as the "hard" games are always the most interesting ones and the ones that end up being the most useful in the end. The nasty "trick" he included in EP5 actually made EP5 solvable.

I've read EP8 spoilers but I'm going to suspend judgement on them until I've actually read how it plays out-- so I wouldn't change anything about the end just yet since I haven't really read it.

Also, in general, I would edit the fuck out of R07's writing. I dunno if BT was editing it for him or not before he died, but large sections of several episodes (4, 7 are the most egregious but others have issues too) seem to be completely unedited in places.

Because of Battler's "sin", people die.

Battler's "sin" should be pretty clear. Whether or not that is a good reason to commit murders (or FAKE murders as some people's theories go...) is an entirely different matter. If you go by EP7 it's pretty clear that Yasu isn't exactly the most mentally stable individual, so if it helps, you could say Yasu completely lost it.

How to make Umineko more awesome?

DID; every maid and servant has DID, and they're all finger fucking each other, and they all wear Beatrice. DID maids DIDling DID maids all over the place. They also appear to have Did Rokkenjima.

PONY all over the place. Battler promised each DID Maid something different.

All Episodes simultaneously solvable by Knox AND AT THE SAME TIME Love. (And aren't possible as separate solutions, meta penetrates the real world at the moment of each murder, and the mystery fundamentally limits the meta simulation).

Meta battles about meta battles about meta battles. Seventeen new kinds of coloured texts.

Eight new loli self-insert witches. Battler is more obviously a witch, as is Kinzo. And they're both really female.

In the final episode Battler becomes Beatrice and is brutally raped by Kinzo; while they meta-battle.

I really dislike how Ryukishi dangled in front of us the possibility that we had another "multiple realities" just like Higurashi and that solving them individually would clear up the truth of all of them as well. Instead, he went "lol there is only one truth and all the previous were fiction". The main point he was trying to make was that they were fake tales trying to protect the "truth", yes, but there were so many other ways he could've gone around doing it instead that wouldn't have caused the majority of the first arc to become pointless in the larger picture.

What I believe would be a better idea would be to rid Umineko of multiple playing fields entirely. Instead, every game/episode would be the continuation of the last one, with the chessboard merely altered, not thrown away completely. Battler would slowly chip away at the magical illusion Beatrice has brought up, but not fast enough to win each game. He will lose each time, but expose a little bit of the truth every consecutive game. Beatrice, meanwhile, will be backed into a corner. However, for any portions of the story or Rokkenjima that Battler hasn't solved yet, Beatrice is free to twist as she wishes. [continued]

New game logic:
1. Battler has x amount of knowledge about the happenings of Rokkenjima.
2. Anything he does not know, Beatrice is free to conjure up as much magic as she want in those time periods/places he does not know about.
3. Battler uses the knowledge as that he possesses to construct possibilities that could have happened in the places where Beatrice has hidden the truth with magic. He asks confirmation for his conjecture in blue truth. If it is true, Beatrice must confirm it in red.
4. Once Battler has gained this red, he has more clues/facts at his disposal, meaning Beatrice has less wiggle room to conjure her fantasy scenes in the next game. For example, if Battler should confirm the people who died up until x point in time, then Beatrice can no longer freely choose their time and place of death and must follow the facts.

Basically, it would work mostly the same way as the original, but Battler earns his red, instead, and plays on one game board instead of several.

Also, I liked the idea of Eva being portrayed as "villainous" in ep. 3 (or at least Eva Beatrice), only to be confirmed innocent later. What might progress the first few games along more speedily would be to introduce the OBVIOUSLY EVIL meta counterpart of one person on the island for ep. 2 and 4 (ep. 1 and 3 are taken), and allow Battler to prove their innocence and shatter their meta counterpart.

Also, Ryukishi needs to get rid of character bloat. A lot of meta-characters outside of the main few are completely irrelevant to the main plot. BUT, since many of them are good fun to watch, it'd be a waste to throw them away, so instead...

Assign previously useless/under-utilized meta-characters new roles as symbolism (because Ryukishi seems to like doing that). Examples:

Seven Stake Sisters: Outside of being the first mook squad introduced and having quirky personalities (and also being Ange's emotional support), they... don't do much, despite being the, y'know, seven representations of sin and all that. They could take up the role of the "motive revealers" in the meta-world, and be associated with certain characters (much like how Leviathan was associated with Kyrie for a bit). They would go on and on about how their respective victim is "so evil, Batorraaa, you know that they went stab-happy because they were greedy/gluttonous/etc.". Essentially, they would help reveal the "whydunnit" and let themselves be shot down by Battler and his unflinching trust in his family (but Leviathan isn't going down, HUH...). They would then become part of his harem.

Siesta Sisters: I really don't know how they function outside of being victims for Rosa and a a separate squad to summon outside of Stakes... remove them? (don't really see how they couldn't be easily replaced). Chiester410 could be kept, at the very least. Don't see a reason for more, Stakes are more olev.

Eiserne Jungfrau: Dlanor is the only one that matters. Remove the rest, elevate her character importance to Will status. Yes.

Erika and Auau: If we are to go by the magic ending of ep. 8, Ikuko is basically the BT to Battler/Toya's Ryukishi. She would be the critic/editor, in other words. Combine Erika and Auau (mostly with Erika's personality and quirks) to form Battler's "critic" in Chiru, as he starts spouting bull after finding the ugly truth and it's up to Erika to beat it out of him. I don't know whether to put her social status above or below Bern, though.

Gaap: Give her reign over closed rooms.

Here's my truth. I'm seriously considering writing this.

Rokkenjima is inhabited by the remnants of Unit 731's secret work into making a seagull/human hybrid that could fly to America and deliver bombs, as a counter to America's bat bomb plan. Those misshapen monsters are sentient and plot revenge for the cruelty inflicted upon them, but find the human occupation of the island troublesome, so they want to kill off everyone and stage it as the humans murdering each other. Since they're flying, they aren't on the island sensu stricto, and since they're neither animals nor people, they don't count towards the person limit and yet can still interact with the board. They feel a twisted camaraderie towards normal seagulls, and knowing that their mission will be dangerous, they have sent them off the island. This, and not the storm, is the true cause of the absence of gulls on the island.

Since they're engineered to essentially be live balloon bombs, the seagull mutants can blow themselves up when needed. Beatrice is one such seagull hybrid Kinzo shot down during one of his hunts (hence her trapping - Kinzo was also said to be fond of hunting, so it fits perfectly) and fell in love with. That also explains why the Beatrice Rosa met is naive, she's a mutant seagull person who has no idea about technology.

Kinzo has impregnated Seagulltrice and sees her offspring as the new "Beatrice". Since seagull/human hybrids grow faster than humans (believe me, I'm a researcher on freakish hybrids) this is completely plausible. Seagulls use projectile vomit to defend themselves against intruders. Seagulltrice can employ a more drastic version of this, her vomit is a solid, stake-shaped construct. She only has enough food in her stomach for seven vomit projectiles, hence the seven stakes.

New characters in EPX will include Hume, Descartes and Buer. There will be a scene where Battler will pull Auau's wig, revealing that she has a bald spot, after the events in Comiket 77.

Ryukishi seems to think that baitswitching somehow makes him a crafty and intelligent writer. Nu-uh, it just makes the story fragmented and the fans mad.

EDITING. LOTS AND LOTS OF EDITING. There are better ways to express character traits and events than WORDS WORDS WORDS

The playthrough has been going for more than five fucking hours and we haven't even gotten to the first murder yet. I sure as hell don't remember the time it took to get to the murders in the PC VN but once you have a strong opening with Kinzo that piques interest like in Ep 1 you'll want to skip all the filler crap, get the family's personalities and issues out of the way, then get to the plot.
