We need a better musical notation for this. Plain notes doesn't cut it, we need some way to write rhythm.

May I suggest a simplified MML style:
1 = whole note, 2 = half note, 4 = quarter note, etc? Triplets can be 3(note,note,note), and since Virtual Piano already uses the letter r, / can represent rests. Every note is separated by spaces, and a | ends the current musical phrase and begins a new one.

Ex: Flight of the Bamboo Cutter:

There is, and it converts each track straight to Music Macro Language.

It is in Japanese, but I'm pretty sure you can change it to English in the preferences, menu; mine's in English. It was written for the online RPG Mabinogi, in that game you could play songs by using Music Macro Language.

There's a database to upload MML songs, http://mabimml.modev.jp/index.cgi?class=4&part=4
It's in Japanese also, and its export/import functions will only work on Internet Explorer. The URL takes you straight to the doujin game music section, there's other sections on the side navigation bar.
