6701917 No.6701917 [Reply] [Original]

>A Japanese university on Monday apologised to the family of an Indian student who committed suicide in 2007, after leaving a note saying he would kill himself because of bullying at school. The male student, then aged 20, at Otemon Gakuin University in Osaka prefecture, jumped from a building three years ago, leaving a note saying: "The bullying I keep getting at school ... Cannot take it any more."

>The student, who was born to Indian parents and grew up in Japan, had earned. Compounding the tragedy, his father, depressed about his son's suicide, later jumped to his death from the same building

>Local media said he had been forced to take his trousers down in front of other people and that he had been nicknamed "bin Laden".

I immediately get jumped by his 5 friends. When the principals and campus cop arrived, everyone says I instigated it, included the teacher that probably saw the whole thing. So I get handcuffed and sent down to the police station. Ended up with a suspension, a fine, and community service.

Apparently everyone said I was going to shoot up the school as well, so the guys that kicked my ass were considered heroes by the school newspaper.

Good thing was that that was the final straw for my parents, and they moved me to a new school. From what I hear, the rumor that went around from my old one was that I got sent to jail and got raped constantly. Anytime I met someone from there later on, they'd always ask "Hey did you get raped in prison?"

The terminal velocity would need you to be so far away, that it'd be practically impossible to hit him.

Unless that is it was a really small caliber like a .22, to a spot that's not immediately lethal, or a larger shot again aimed at a non-critical area. Even so, shooting someone basically anywhere can kill them from bleeding (or ricochet off bone if it's a small caliber like again, .22)

At another school I was heading to the bus and another guy blocked my way, when I tried to go past he kept going from either side like a basketball player or something. I missed the bus. This kept happening and I transferred and then people called me a wuss.

I think it depends on the country and area. Here in norcal, legitimate bullying even in middle school was considered immature and low as fuck; any fight breaking out would typically result in instant expulsion from the school for the perp.

Maybe I'm biased though because I was never bullied; people respected me because I was one of the kids in all honors classes, and similarly at uni where I was one of the top 2% academics wise, no one gave me shit even though my room was decorated with statues and such to hell. If you actually are a smart kid, then I found that people will just resign your weirdness to the fact that most smart kids are very weird in some way.

Working as a lab tech before I decided whether I wanted to go to grad school, and my colleagues were often pretty fucking rough. I was basically roped in with the Asian guys because it turns out one of the senior techs was a huge Touhou fan (don't ask me how the subject came up) and because of that I was expected to just not talk to some people unless it was work related. Basically there was a huge fuss over accusing people of being there because they were med school rejects, rather than actually wanting to work in industry, aka who belonged there and who got to get picked on to pieces for being one of those bragging faggots as an undergrad "I'm gonna be a doctor and make 5x your salary" and then getting rejected.

In the scientific world where everyone is at least minimally smart, everyone strives to point out that they're a genius among already intelligent people, and competition and shit talking gets fierce like nothing I've seen before. Well, I have one tale of frustration, but it's really tame.
One of the guys at work was notorious for being a dick and, I suppose you could call him a bully. Anyway, he ripped me a new asshole for submitting a request for enhancement for adding NTP authentication to our product.... All he did was yell at me for five minutes about how much of an idiot I was and scribble ntp.org on my white board. I just laughed at him.... For some reason I tend to crack up when people are being unreasonable and dick-headed.

Anyway, I reviewed the NTP docs and found that our implemented version of NTP did in fact support auth, so all I did was add a note to the RFE saying the guy was a douche (basically), and re-submitted it.

Ironically, today, I believe we have a lot more respect for each other. He's actually not bad once you get to know him, but he loves to talk shit and brag about how uber he is compared to everyone else.

Yeah, but sometimes you're out of ammo or you've just met a (seemingly) impenetrable wall during argumentation. I know well the sense of frustration that meets me when someone throws an argument I can't beat. It does sounds like the perfect place for bullying.

>someone finally pries me off, the guy is on the ground fucking dumbstruck
>turn around to leave like a fucking boss before anyone else comes
>guy grabs me, turns me around and punches me in the face, trips me to the ground, continues to stomp on my side and writes shit like "I am poor let me clean your toilet just like my daddy does" (actual line) on my shirt

I'm the guy from the post right below yours.... I'm glad there aren't too many assholes where I work other than the one I mentioned, and even he's pretty easy to work with if you give him just as much shit as he gives everyone else.
I work with a ton of people with PhDs in EE and Physics, and they all seem to be really chill and helpful people.... Must be something special about hardware designers and programmers.

So what? If you're wrong, or you don't have a good, supported argument to the contrary, just concede and laugh it up.

If someone has a good point, acknowledge it. If they're wrong, show them precisely why. If you're wrong, don't make excuses, just own up to it.

It's all pretty black and white isn't it? I don't see what the big deal is. If people are blatantly trying to out-do each other with dick waving, just laugh at them.

The thing is, some people have this thing called 'pride'. And it can really get in the way of rational thinking. When your pet theory is utterly disproved by your rival, you just can't help it, even if you know that you're the bad guy.

>> No.6702535

True story.

I was bullied in elementary, but I fought back every single time. Eventually the bully respected me for this and we became best friends. Then we bullied the schoolyard together.

>> No.6702538

>>6702525

Pride is asinine in that context though. I feel a bit of ass pain when it turns out I'm quite wrong about something at work, but I find it highly educational.

bread, cereal, pasta, they have you thinking it is the best thing you can eat and that meat is bad
you should never eat bread or cereal or pasta or anything made from grains, you may as well drown yourself in table sugar

Not everyone can keep the rational thought. That's what creates bullies, people that give themselves to their emotions. They realize that words are only weapons, but they're only weapons when violence is hiding somewhere nearby, ready to back them up.

Very much this. It gets really bad when some guy spent years working on a model hypothesis only to get proven wrong.. they can spend years fighting an otherwise accepted argument just because they don't want to look inferior for using a faulty model or because they have some evidence that can somewhat support their model.

Infighting over climate change and evolutionary theory often gets taken advantage of by people trying to pass off openly accepted ideas as still being "controversial subjects" because there is always that one asshole who disagrees. My own term for them is hipster scientists. They're really detrimental sometimes though in delaying changes that would otherwise benefit the public (such as the stink over GMO), so as amusing as peoples' delusions can be, it's not so good in the end.

>> No.6702629

>>6702559

There's nothing wrong with being a contrarian in regard to climate science and Evolutionary Biology, but they have the play by the rules of science, and that's where many of the "assholes who disagree" get it wrong.
For example, people try to pass off Evolution as "controversial" because they believe that it is a theory in chaos, but it's not.

People don't argue about whether or not Evolution is true, they argue about the methods and mechanics by which Evolution takes place.

Also, if someone isn't cut out for possibly wasting years of their life on an idea that might turn out to be completely wrong, then they should find a different career immediately.

The thing is, that media and people who are against certain theories for whatever reason (e.g strongly religious people, and think tanks hired to protect certain corporations' interests) will blow out of proportion small little inconsistencies and pretend that there's this huge controversy.

Like for example in the Southern U.S I bet most kids are taught in schools that evolution is a "hotly contested" theory etc without leaving out the fact that people are only arguing over extreme details in an otherwise rock-solid body of evidence.. like whether or not the advent of introns/exons evolved earlier or later in eukaryotic evolutionary history, for example.. that's still unknown but is the kind of thing that could get misconstrued by laymen as "scientists aren't sure when genes evolved" or some other grossly inaccurate oversimplification, because they simply don't know the proper terminology to understand what the questions are.

No, you don't. Just bullshit pseudoscience. The whole logic of the BREAD IS EVIL IT WILL KILL YOU crowd is basically that "hurr our ancestors didn't make bread before they were smart enough to that must mean it is bad for you here have another helping of meat".

My Australian school experience was interesting.
There were no cliques, but groups of friends. The most popular group contained the smartest kids, but these kids were also the school's sporting champions. I hated sports so I spent my time studying, for which I was alienated.

Anyway, I was bullied by this one guy, a fellow called Matthew. He was the star of the school, champion athlete, best academic, son of two teachers, objectively quite handsome, everything. He was pretty much perfect. After enduring his living hell until year 12, and after a particularly nasty confrontation I'd had enough of his bullshit.
As Matthew turned and went to leave I ran. Grabbing the back of his head I shoved him forwards and down whilst swinging my legs forwards. His face met the ground with the full weight of the fall and I took it a much lesser one to the ass.

I got off with a suspension, he received a fractured jaw, chipped teeth, broken nose, was partially blinded in one eye and was concussed. I wish I'd done it sooner, despite the punishment, because no one fucked with me thereafter.

PS I stole the move from Dead Rising.

You're absolutely correct. It is a shame that bullying in some form or another still takes place even at very high levels of academia. I've even heard quite a few people take nasty digs at Brian Greene and others for wasting their time with M theory.

It must be rather hard to be in the sciences because you have ignorant fucks coming at you from below, and your peers ripping you to shreds in peer review from above and to the sides.... It sounds like an all out face-rape festival.

If anything, the proper diet is high in properly prepared vegetables, with light helpings of lean meat and grain. Everything in moderation you know.

And you're right, the fact that early humans didn't eat wheat means nothing. We have ways of adapting/evolving to process new things... just look at the evolved ability in part of the human population to digest lactose in milk.

I was referring to the type of social stratification seen in America, where jocks, nerds, band-kids, etc. form groups and don't associate much with those outside them.
This is a stereotypical, but I assume it's somewhat apt?
