Do you prefer stories you read to end with happiness or misfortune?

>> No.6585052

Misfortune, unless it's a romance. Poetic justice makes me vomit in my mouth.

>> No.6585058

Provided the story makes me care about the characters' happiness or misfortune and the ending actually fits, either is fine. Everyone loves a happy ending, of course, but an incongruous happy ending to a sad story really kills the mood.

My father once said a story isn't good unless the main character eventually dies. Then again my father also loves Waterworld.

On the whole, think he's got the right idea, though. It is more important that the ending is well made and fits the story than that it ends a given way.

for me is the opposite.

I prefer romantic stories that end in misfortune. True love must be reached in a point, but only for a brief moment; a feeling so powerful mustn't become something ordinary or to get used to.

>> No.6587603

I like bittersweet endings. Endings that resolve most of the conflict that was introduced, but not necessarily in the way that was completely ideal, even for the protagonist. If everything goes perfectly, it will seem silly, and if everything suddenly goes the worst way it possibly could, it will feel silly too.

But I'd probably like happy endings more if it weren't for shitty authors thinking that happy endings can't have an emotional impact, that the only ending that people will actually remember is a completely soul-crushingly depressing one.

I like both. I want the characters = to struggle through misfortune and then make it out on top. I enjoy stories where effort = reward. But a lot of people don't do it right or just copy other people. Its always along the lines of "Good guy good at heart, works very hard, but things happen, good guy pulls through". That's the core theme but I rarely ever see someone stray from it in VN.

You know what I really want? A story about someone like Archer or Kitsurugi. There means of getting results are their tragedy but they get a justified end which is for the greater good or cynics who know that not everyone can be happy or not every end good end can be reached with good means. Or a bad guy with a selfish but ultimately human and understandable motivation winning, like Caster. She's selfish enough to harm other people for her goal of winning the grail and living with the man she loves. Sure its selfish, but the very foundation of life is built on selfishness and she has every right to pursue her own goals.

The current moral of stories with effort = happiness is based upon on needless philanthropy, what I want is a story with effort = happiness based on pragmatic realism. A situation where you're being happy means someone else isn't happy and you not being judged because of that or the person who failed to attain happiness isn't judged because of that. It should be presented as something that happens and has to be dealt with.

This is a round about way of saying Caster should have won goddamn, she deserves to be happy ;_;
