Sumaga stuff from TLWiki's Talk page.
>What happened with the Sumaga project, really? I remember them saying it was probably going to be done by October, October 2009. The thing is that it was going really fast at that time when you said that, so it wasn't exactly an unlikely statement.
>But what happened? I know the partnership happened, did the drive disappear because it wasn't going to be released anyway, as in "no hurry", or was it something else?

>Hello. This is gckc. Wow, ready for October 2009. Time sure flies. Well, let's just say some pesky IRL shit happened and is still largely happening. Plus, it went fast in the beginning at the cost of quality. It happens when you're a total amateur with a rapidly changing vision (such as using proper tenses and cementing mostly Oki, Mira, Arided and God's speech patterns). The early stuff needs some extensive retranslation and style matching(from overly literal to something inspired by Ted Woolsey of FF6 and Chrono Trigger) anyway, which is partly what I've been doing at the moment.

It makes me sad to see how naive /jp/ really is.

Use some common sense, people! Is there ANY reason why ONE SINGLE script would take a month to translate when the rest of the game has been done at a much faster rate, in comparison? Of course not. They refrain from uploading the final script to prevent someone from making an unofficial 100% patch, which is exactly what I would do if they DID upload it.

Now, here's the thing: I can just make a 95% patch, and play it for a month until they release the whole thing. Did the same thing for Remember11, except that time I couldn't make the patch myself because the engine actually required real hacking.

Ok, since nothing else is happening in this thread right now... let's talk about moege! (that are currently in translation)

I'm waiting warmly for Hoshimemo, which seems to be moving at an acceptable pace, and all despite a C&D and some annoying engine issues. (inb4 2015, the pace is fine and VN translations are supposed to take years anyway)
Fortune Arterial has also got me pretty excited, because it seems to be pretty active all of a sudden in the last few weeks.
Osadai looks like it will be decent for pure moe enjoyment, although I hear that it sucks as a game in general (but that's not what I care about in a game I'm playing for moe anyway).

Which is fucking retarded.

Anime and VNs are completely different. While translation notes and tangents popping up everywhere while watching a video are annoying, they're not going to be that obstructive when playing what basically amounts to a text adventure with pictures.

Alternatively, you could do what the CLANNAD FV translators were doing and have translation notes pop up on mouseover if you don't want to include them in the normal text at all.

Fact is, some things ARE simply untranslatable and rather than giving up and saying LOLOLOL THIS VN WILL NEVER BE IN ENGLISH it would be a better idea to at least make some kind of attempt. Furthermore, I don't think that many people will be able to tell how 'bad' a Subahibi translation would be in the first place.

"quotes" doesn't mean that you just have the text translated for you and just have to copypaste.
You have to scan the whole game to see if you missed references, find the smallest quotation from a book that's not probably even available on internet, doublecheck everything, etc.
This just for the quotes, without considering when the text just turns plain weird or difficult to translate in general because of the author style.

It takes English-speaking schoolchildren just as long to become educated in their first language, too.
Presumably, you are more mentally developed than a child, and you can already read and speak at least one language.
Now, learning as many Kanji as an educated native speaker would probably take at least a few years, but the idea is that once you know your kana and grammar, you can use AGTH and a dictionary to lookup EVERY kanji, until you start to remember them.

Actually, putting it like that makes it sound so simple and easy that it kinda makes ME want to try it. I mean, how hard can it be to learn the kana and the functions of a few particles?
...Ok, so it's probably more difficult than I make it sound, but for reference's sake, I do believe Ixrec started translating with less than a year of Japanese experience under his belt.

>> No.6579197

>>6579121
It IS that easy. I memorized the JLPT4 Kanji, the basic grammar on Tae Kim's site, and started translating manga. Granted, it was a pain in the ass at first, but if you do it a month or so things start sticking and you can just pick up the advanced grammar as you go along by looking it up.

The hardest part is identifying kanji, which is a pain with furigana-less manga but blissfully simple with AGTH and some random visual novel.

>Remember to save before your party jumps out of the TV screen. #bestworstadvice #harem
>If you find yourself in sex play that's too advanced for you, level up and try again later. #bestworstadvice #harem
Now this is something new. It look like an RPG or a parody of RPGs, so it's either that Circus title with gameplay, or the source of those unidentified teaser BGMs.

Been studying Japanese on and off for a year and a half.

What the guy says about reading VNs with AGTH is right, this makes some VNS easier than manga. You can avoid all the "HOW MANY STROKES LOL CAN U FIND ME?" bullshit.

And when you find these fucks, add them + the word into anki, WITH THE STORY for that kanji that you made up or found on kanjidicks or whatever. Eventually you have shit like 翻す memorized. I must note though, that without anki I hardly remember anything.

And the best way to learn grammar if you can't figure it out is by ASKING PEOPLE. I shit you not. Everything else, learn on your own.

>> No.6584049

The point of it is that you get to start playing it now, and by the time you get to the untranslated part, the official patch may already be released.

Additionally, some people probably believe that chapters 1 through 4 are already fully edited and QC'd, and although that is probably not entirely true, I do think that the segments in this unofficial patch will be MOSTLY identical to those in the official patch.

I personally won't be downloading this, because a partial patch seems useless to me when a full patch is on the horizon (and out of respect to the team...), but I don't think that creating "unofficial" patches from publicly avaliable scripts is inherently wrong. It's not a leak and it's not "stealing", and I don't think it's against the spirit of fan translation either.

If the translators express a clear desire to NOT have their work released before they chose to, I will personally respect that (and the G-Sen devs already HAVE expressed that, in my opinion), but at the same time, I think making scripts publicly available kind of makes it "fair game."

>> No.6584141

Chapter 4 is pretty much ready, actually. But by the time QC finished, the game was already almost completely finished anyway so it was decided 'fuck it, why bother' and to wait until it's done.

I don't really care if someone makes an unofficial chapter 4 patch at this point. But the last person who made a patch and posted it to the public literally used scripts that were 2 years old(as in, scripts that were in use before the project was even put on TLWiki). If you're going to make your own patch for personal use, whatever. But if you're going to make it public, at least don't go out of your way to do a shitty job of it like the last person.
