Simple question:
What is Japan's honest view on Christianity?

>> No.6527628

What?

Indifferent.

I'll call Japan in the morning and let you know.

>> No.6527639

Only 1% of Japan follows Christianity. It's classified as a "new religion" in the government.

Really, after World War II destroyed the value Shinto had to them, they're not the most religious people anymore.

>> No.6527642

Anything I would know would be from the movie Love Exposure, and that's fiction.

Cool foreign voodoo. They're pretty superstitious so they probably pray to that god too just in case.

It's how they style their marriages now and that's about it.

they don't care about religion at all, Japan is the closest you'll find to a truly atheist country.

I see no problem with that. Fried chicken is common in Christmas Parties in America too you know.

>> No.6527666

Most Japanese don't call themselves religious but still do shinto ceremonies and celebrate christmas.

>> No.6527672

>>6527666
Basically they take out the boring parts of religion and keep the festivals.

>> No.6527674

>>6527666
They still do Shinto ceremonies because that was not only the indigenous religion, it is heavily integrated into their very culture. If I recall, it's basically because it's less theology and more ritual.

>> No.6527686

Hi, jap here.

Most of us think of weddings, Xavier(missionary), and sometimes crazy zealots. (Most of us aren't familiar with people that are so ultra sensitive/devout)

Mostly the first two, though.

Christmas basically has no connections with christianity in Japan, we think of it as purely a commercial thing for children + christmas eve is the night for couples/confessions.

>> No.6527711

>>6527697
Christmas' DATE doesn't have a legitimate Christian connection.
The holiday itself is just as tied to Christianity as it is to any other religion.

>> No.6527720

>>6527697
Well, yes. It's basically just a tool that was used to convert pagans over while giving them something similar to their winter festivals. But I know that at least in the US, people celebrate Christ's birth (even though it should be spring?).

Similar deal with Valentines day, + our own original white day (give back/answer to valentine).

Leaving out the small minority of religious people (who are seldom as zealous as the western counterparts), most of Japan is generally ambivalent about religion, but weary. We see things in the news & history where religion is at the center of justification for war/violence. (like our own history in WWII or crusades, etc...) Also, cults like Oum Shinrikyou or souka gakkai also contribute to a distrustful attitude towards religion.

Come to think of it, do the Japanese believe Catholic and Muslim assassins are fighting each other beneath the world's eye?

I guess they respect it to some degree because there still isn't a Bible VN with Jesus as the protagonist and his Apostles as little girls.

Honestly, Jesus would be an awesome protagonist. He was badass during the Harrowing of Hell, not to mention the entire Book of Revelation.

I don't see how anyone would be offended by that Jesus. In fact, I don't think anyone would mind much if Saint Young Men was added to the Biblical canon.

Let's Bible would be a valid point though (it even has gothloli Judas!), even if it isn't a VN.

I'm actually thinking Jesus himself as a girl too. Then she can be the Catholic Girls' School onee-sama and be surrounded by her admirers in form of the apostles. Jesus going to a Catholic school would be hilarious in any case.

Shittons of anime have Christian themes, symbolism, or use it as a default religion. Hell the only time I see shinto is in supernatural shounen manga. Meanwhile in any old anime you'll have the Christian god incarnate herself into a girl and grant the protag a wish or something.

This shows it's pretty mainstream among otaku for some reason.
