SR-71 is a recon and surveillance plane with the highest and fastest speeds for a runway launched aircraft (due to almost extra-atmospheric flight) , which matches up well with Aya's reputation for speed and profession as a photographic reporter. Plus: Blackbird, black bird.

Not sure if I agree with the casting of Momiji though. The Fudd isn't a good representation of her combat capacity, maybe something like a B-17 would fit if you ignored the size implications.

Modern soldiers are less fighter and more investigator/assassin - at least as far as vehicles go - as war technology is currently in a phase where weapons are superior to armor (like the advent of the rifle). So AWACS are used as spotters for F-16s (soon F-35s) or Harriers as they make a strike, a hit-and-run attack pattern that prevents prolonged combat that drastically increases the chance of a downed craft. That's mostly what I was thinking in the selection of it: Momiji's a melee combatant at a disadvantage in a world of largely ranged attackers, the B-17 (or YB-40) is a turreted and sluggish craft in a world of combat that now moves faster sound itself and strikes with absolute lethality and precision. It'd even fit how she's less difficult than Aya in the games.

I can see the similarities in how she sounds the alarm and Aya comes to provide more solid combat prowess, however she does put up a notable fight. While an AWACS might be the better spotter, a fortress-type outfitted with surveillance cameras and other detection equipment would have some combat capacity, as compared to the AWACS' complete lack thereof.

I'd say Momiji could perhaps better be relegated to a drone aircraft like an MQ-9 Reaper, as such aircraft do mostly long-duration surveillance/patrolling and yet still have the capability to strike if need be.

As far as aircraft priority goes they are peons as well, which goes with Momi being a grunt tengu. Even though she's supposed to be an unimportant grunt, she's still by far my favorite tengu simply because she doesn't come across as a nosy bitch like the other two.

Though I suppose realistically, whether it's been publicly unveiled or not AWACS probably are capable of fending for themselves to much greater extent than assumed, if nothing else with pretty extensive countermeasures. It just doesn't make sense to build something that vital and valuable only to leave it a sitting duck.

AWACs have radar jammers iirc. I'm not sure if they carry chaff or other defenses, but probably not, since I'd assume that they'd rely on other fighters they are assisting in defending it. After all the EF-111 was also unarmed and did great in its role.

Also AWACs can sense other aircraft many hundreds of kilometers away, they could likely just evade or call for help well before enemy aircraft even detects they're there.

AWACS are typically built on frames similar to commercial mid to large-sized aircraft, the primary design goal being fuel efficiency, the secondary being inexpensive manufacture. The most weaponry you'll see them with is are decoy flares, however those are almost useless since patrols typically are such a distance away from backup that decoys will be depleted before reinforcements arrive.
