No-one wants to TLC Killer Queen because they basically have to retranslate it from scratch.

A few editors tried their hand at editing it, but the tl was so bad they couldn't understand what was going on and they gave up. I think one of them wrote about it somewhere in Amaterasu's forums if any of you are curious. Either way, the project's waiting on a dedicated TLCer/retranslator. Go bug a fluent person if you're deperate to see it out by 2012.

Or you can just rebuild the script yourself and play it right now (with the incorrect, Engrishy translation). The game is fully voiced and if you aren't an idiot, you can make enough sense of the translation to play the game...

Honestly, it's not that hard; the scripts on tlwiki are already ready to go. All you have to do is take the six files in order and link them together (i.e., open notepad and copy-paste six times) and then save it as "0.txt" in the game's directory. Then you rename or move the original nscript.dat and put an ONScripter or ONScripter-EN binary in the folder, and launch it.

Speaking of SubaHibi...

http://forums.novelnews.net/showthread.php?t=35910
>Translation Bounty: Subarashiki Hibi
>I originally made this proposition to two individuals in private. One of them declined, and the other said at the time they'd give it a shot, but has since stopped returning my E-mails. So now I've decided to make it public - I'm not really expecting any takers, but who knows? At the least, the sight of it might remind people to answer their messages.
>I like Subarashiki Hibi. I would like to share it with those of my acquaintances who have higher priorities in life than to become fluent in the Japanese language. That seems to apply to me as well (or I'm just lazy) and attempting a translation myself would no doubt be disastrous. So, instead, I wish to offer my small collection of VN merchandise as encouragement for anyone who might be interested in doing a proper job of it.
>The cream of the crop is probably the MuvLuv stuff I bought at AX, while the most pertinent to SubaHibi would be the Yuki dakimakura/tapestry set I have coming my way - or, if you'll accept nothing else, the first press edition of the game itself. There is more, but I won't spam by listing every last possession of mine.
>You don't even need to commit to translating the entire game - I'd be content to see the trial version patched, which might stir up interest and encourage someone else to take up the mantle.
>E-mail me if you're at all interested; if you have what it takes, I hope we can work out a reward to your liking.

the only reason Muv-Luv was translated is because Alternative suffers a bit without it. You wouldn't understand the ending and the characters without it. And besides the military jergon and quantity of text, it's pretty easy to translate.
Subahibi has a lot of text, and most of it is quite difficult to translate. Most translators don't think about picking it up because it's more trouble than they are willing to bargain for,
Ixrec doesn't care about degrading the original script as long as he can say he brought a masterpiece to the english scene though (as seen for Cross Channel), so you can hope he'll choose it for the project after Forest.

The demo is 31000 lines and change, so the 11000 LoSs is reporting makes up a little more than a third of the demo. Those 31000 lines make up basically the entire common route of the game, and there are most likely five branch routes after that. So yes, Rewrite is a pretty damn long game.
I have heard reports that it is expected to be about the same length as LB!Ex, but I feel like it ought to be longer than that, if the common route alone is 31000 lines.

With regards to SubaHibi, the literary references only enhance the experience, if you're into that sort of thing. And even if you're not, it's done well and doesn't really detract from the story (having said that I'm only on It's My Own Invention). I highly doubt that there's any need to go tracking down everything that Wittgenstein has ever wrote just to understand it. The scene at the end of Down the Rabbit Hole with Zakuro and the Night on the Galactic Railroad was fucking perfect and worked well because it was such an odd and mystical scene anyway.

First of all, Air is about 50000 lines. That aside, though, 31000 lines is still longer than plenty of games that aren't exactly short, so it is indeed a little ridiculous for a demo... However, the people working on translating/editing/hacking the trial seem pretty certain about the length (they gave an exact number, but I forgot it), so either the game is longer than it seems, or it is as you say and the demo includes more of the script than it reveals in-game.

It is like 2 GB, after all... It's easy to see that whatever it is, it's quite huge.

Obviously it isn't. Even a print novel is only about 3 or 5 hundred kilobytes (and normal-length VNs are generally about 1MB, which goes to show how much more text they have than standard books).

Now, I know you are autistic, so you can't understand it when people talk to you, but let me try to explain it again. The rewrite trial is about 2GB. It's not quite that much, and installed, it's even less, but that isn't the point (don't give me some bullcrap about 1.9 != 2.0).

>>6491285
TakaJun is a good translator in the most technical sense, but as a non-native English speaker, he is not a good writer (which is what good translation really entails). TakaJun's translation abilities require an editor with literary genius to produce the same sort of final product that Ixrec can make mostly on his own.

That said, TakaJun's translation style works fine for the sort of games he likes to play and translate anyway, so as long as he sticks to moeshit and the like, everything will be fine.

In terms of Subahibi, TakaJun basically hated it, so I would certainly hope/expect that he wouldn't want to translate it in the first place. Ixrec hasn't played it yet, but I think he will love it, and if he loves it enough, he will want to translate it soon-ish, I predict. Makoto probably isn't going to translate Subahibi.
Now, what about Moogy? I don't think Moogy really likes translating, and I don't think he feels confident enough in his ability to properly render SubaHibi in English (which is why he didn't translate it after all...) If no one picks it up for a long time, Moogy might actually do it at some far off point in the distance, but that would be far enough away that an Ixrec translation is still a much more imminent possibility.

I am also assuming that nobody else will come out of nowhere and want to translate it. I think SubaHibi reaches the level that a shitty noob translator couldn't really touch it in the first place, and I think any other not-so-genius but experienced translators on the scene are probably more content to leave it to one of the above (or at least will be afraid to get in the way).

Ixrec is great, not sayng othrwise.

And I am also sure has improved alot since his last work, as he have steadly goten bete betwwn ach and every patch.

But Ixrec still does a little too many horrible errors in his translations.
Such as parts who even get their meaning inverted etc, horrible mistakes in other words, and the bad part is how there are more than just one or three or so, but that they keep coming.

But yes, it is still a rare problem, and at the whole it never really affects the work in any significant way.
ut the core differences here is how Ixrec's turns out into sensible english,, but you will need compedetative knowledge of Japanese and the source text to sort out these sorts of mistakes.
TakaJun's grasp of Japanese is however on a whole other level, so those sorts of mistakes is not comonly a problem, the trade-off here is how the english can come out a bit garbled.

tl;dr
Ixrec makes daunting and unacceptable translation errors.
TakaJun may gives the editors a heavy work load with garbled english.

know Ixrec is proud or something for his translation speed, but honestly I would say that he would do fine to done that whole thing down a bit if he could take some more time to concentrate etc
Because it's all great otherwise.

>> No.6491491

>>6491392
Yes, I think you've nailed down the central dichotomy here. The ideal translator is someone who possesses a literary genius in BOTH languages, in addition to having a deep involvement with the cultures and canons associated with each (For example, Vladimir Nabokov's translation of Eugene Onegin from Russian into English).

However, even with as much talent, knowledge, and confidence as he had, he still basically wrote two separate translations of Eugene Onegin: One which was more literal and preserved the meaning and cultural nuances as best he could, and another which focused on literary style and preserved the unique "Onegin Stanzas" (a complex system of rhyme and meter unique to the play).

Basically, even if there is no bottleneck on either the "Source" or "Target" sides, there is still no "perfect" translation. Translation is a fundamentally error-inducing concept. To bring this back to the situation at hand, both Ixrec's translations and TakaJun's can be said to be "good", even if they are completely different.
In these cases, there are bottlenecks (Ixrec's in his experience with Japanese, and TakaJun's in his knowledge of English), but the result of these is that each of the two will simply choose a different side of that dichotomy that even Nabokov couldn't overcome.

>> No.6491578

>>6491491
VNs and other voiced medium have a few odd complications as well. Something I run into a lot with doujin stuff is that a normal conversation or question will be better expressed in the opposite for lingual reasons, especially when characters start using double negatives which aren't a grammatical clusterfuck in Japanese. I can get to just change the no to a yes to preserve the conversation flow without it coming off looking retarded. You lose a little bit of that freedom to create the appropriate sentence structure along the way.

>> No.6491715 [DELETED]

>>6491578
Well, really, you are highlighting an interesting issue that is almost specific to J->E translation. Translation between Germanic, Slavic, and Romance languages is going to be a lot more straightforward than translation between any one of those and a language like Japanese or Korean, which are almost "Language Isolates" in the first place.
Those double negatives work just fine in Japanese, because of the whole "indirection" thing, but their translation into English is difficult because of the amazing flexibility of the English language: They can be translated literally, and yield a clusterfuck, as you described, or they can be modified for the sake of sounding natural in English.

Actually, that brings up another point I have thought about. In the overarching weeaboo community, we put up with a lot of strange linguistic patterns which can best be described as "artifacts of translation." Things like "It can't be helped" for example. Basically, the English translations we produce and consume are really more like a strange hybrid. They wouldn't seem nearly as acceptable to someone with no experience with Japanese culture as they do to us.

>> No.6491732

>>6491715
I only casually watch anime / play VNs, and the kinda hybrid you're talking about always bothers me. I can handle it, but I'd prefer not to. I like it and can relate more to the story, characters, etc, when everything flows a bit more naturally.

>> No.6491760

>>6491715
The no experience thing is also interesting. We accept or even expect major modifications to scripts when done by professionals, but god help the fan translator who changes anything at all. It's better now than it was 15 years ago when the script was more like a guideline but it's really not all that better these days. The tradeoff is that professional translations are less likely to be the grammatical disasters that most fan translations are. Even the best ones make me want to break out the red pen and fixing simple comma and tense errors.

>> No.6491823

>>6491760
My sense is that "Professional" translators do certainly avoid that "hybrid" style I referred to before, but in terms of the quality of the English, it's still a toss up. The best fan translators are much much better (in terms of grammar, mechanics, and readability) than most "Professional" translations I have read, but the pros do at least have somewhat higher level of consistency: Their worst is much better than the worst of the fan translations, and their best isn't quite as good (the pros have a narrower range, in other words).

Now, though, we are seeing quite a number of these "collaborations" spring up (NNLxMangagamerxMinori, JASTxtlwikixNitroplus, SekaiProjectx0verlow, etc), and I am thinking that this might be the "answer." Translations that originate with fans will have the potential to surpass standard "professional" translations, and the supervision of the original developer will mean that a totally shitty translation (worse than the lowest quality pro TLs) won't get through.

Basically, I am thinking that these collaborations will move the range from either [pro-low]-[pro-high] or [fan-low]-[fan-high] to [pro-low]-[fan-high], which is more optimal than either of the two non-collaborative ranges.
Of course, before any of that, we have to see one of these things actually come to fruition...

I was more thinking about console games like Persona or similar when I wrote that. Honestly, I've been extremely underwhelmed by every professional translation of VNs (and anime subs for that matter). Hackers never get the respect or renown they deserce.

>> No.6497522

You're shitting me, right? Most VNs use very well known file formats and extraction tools and are built off of each other. Even when they don't, it's only a few days to a week's worth of work at most if the hacker knows what they're doing. The issue is that there even fewer hackers in the VN TL scene than there are translators, so everybody wants their time, and almost none of them want to put in any effort since the work is mundane as shit.

>> No.6497573

>>6497499
I agree that some other roles don't get much respect or enough credit for their work, but following through my previous point, whether a game gets translated or not depends solely on the availability or dedication of a translator- which is always the limiting factor in translation of VNs, which require obscene amounts of time. A hacker's job may be incredibly tough depending on the nuances of the various game engines (esp. proprietary ones), but if any job is harder than the actual translating, then they're definitely doing it wrong.
