From what I understand these three are tiger demons of some sort, though Kyuki has wings and Toukotsu has a ridiculously long tail (which is hilariously featured in most of her pictures).

I really like this artist, too; they did most of the work I've got saved.

Kyuki and Toukotsu seem to have a thing for one another, while Toukotsu seems to have a big sister relationship with Byakko and Kyuki is more or less the responsible figure of the three.

Relatively speaking, anyway.

From a few of the pictures I've seen, they're also either afraid of or creeped out by kappa.

Or whatever this particular Nijiura character is, because I know he's also one of their meme-ish characters.

I'm pretty much out of things to say so I'll cut back on it to speed this up a bit, but if you've got any questions you may as well shoot. I don't know Japanese language and barely any folk lore, but I'm sure the latter ties into these guys pretty closely, so if you want to expand on things, that's cool too.

They're pretty goddamn adorable, too.

Oh right, another thing.

Being TIGER demons, they naturally have a rivalry with DRAGON type demons, like this one. Kouryu, I think her name is. Just GUESSING here, but since she seems commonly featured peddling smut like a back-alley dealer or shown wearing a sterile mask and sunglasses, calling people over, I'm guessing part of her personality comes from cheap Chinese knockoff marketing? Since she seems to be a Chinese dragon? Just a guess.

Either way, yeah, perverted and a rival of the tigers.

Long-tail seems to be a ring tailed lemur, the meganekko seems to be some sort of griffon or other chimera... Loli is unremarkable.
and the mostly naked one on the right seems to be some sort of dog... the ears suggest cat, but the tail between the legs isn't cat-like.....

all in all very strange.

Honestly, I'm not up enough on my chinese mythology to know them, all I recognize out of the batch of names is Byakko.

Byakko gives off such a Yotsuba vibe and it's fucking adorable.

Toukotsu aka taowu is a tiger-shaped, human-faced, fierce monster gifted with the power of divination. It can see the past and the future, but despite its deep wisdom it is so stubborn that it won't ever shy away from a fight. Persona fans will know it from the bizarre art direction taken with it (of all things to give it, they decided on fairy wings. ) Byakko is... you know, it's Byakko. You can't not know the directional guardians.

Kyuki I can only connect to gyuki, which is an ogre spider (sometimes depicted as a winged creature but has no tiger association) that usually dwells near or under water, sometimes with a curse that if you kill one, you become the next gyuuki (unless Mizuki Shigeru pulled that out of his ass, which is not at all unlikely. )

You know what'd be a nice monstergirl? Keukegen. Ankle-length fluffy green hair, like Kaoru's except much, much longer. It'd be worth her smelling constantly like decay and fungi.

I'm kind of guessing on Kyuki's name. It might actually be Sikyou, because there's two sections here that are labeled Kyuki and Sikyou, but both prominently feature the winged tiger. Sikyou is mostly Wing-tiger + Tail-tiger cheesecake, though, so I'm thinking it's a group picture section as opposed to being just her.

Addendum: Oh yeah taowu is also supposed to be huge (over 5 meters) even for a tiger, so I guess that's what the tail is there for, making up the length difference.

Honestly, the idea is that there is someone so broke, they have to send their kid out to sell matches to make ends meet, who usually dies from exposure according to the story. whether dousing the match girl with gas is a dick move or if they are helping her ascent to heaven, I can't say for sure either way.

Oh yeah, finally found where Kyuuki comes from. In all honesty I should've noticed right away, my bad. 窮奇/Qiong Qi is one of the four fiends banished by Shun (one of the Five Emperors), depicted as either an ox or a tiger; with wings, a fox tail and a penchant for eating people (especially their noses. )

This also explains the Toukotsu connection, since the other three fiends are Toukotsu, Taotie and Hundun. I wonder if there are nijiura maids for Taotie and Hundun too.

Taotie is a pig-like beast that embodies gluttony. Hundun's depictions are vague and varied. Taotie is easy to spot, but I guess Hundun would only be identified by the presence of the other four fiends.

IT's based on an old real-world account of an alien encounter which isn't Japanese from what I remember. Japan has just RUN with it, because they love paranormal stuff. Finds its way into all sorts of things.

It's interesting to note that the Genbu's components (the snake and the tortoise are seperate beings, though sometimes Genbu is depicted as a snake-tailed tortoise) are formed from the cast-off guts and stomach of a deity. I'd much rather see them as a pair, with the snake loli living on top of/within her tortoise elder sister's shell. Obviously, as all sisters should be, they're incestous.

Speaking of snakes, monstergirls and Chinese mythology, I highly recommend reading Legend of the White Snake, the story of a man and his snake demon wife.
