Gensokyo is where all the forgotten Japanese mythology goes into, so there are probably other similar places elsewhere in the world, like the Sidhe mounds in Europe. Every century or so, each such seperate realm sends its best fighters to compete in danmaku fights to determine... well, nothing. In typical Touhou fashion they do it for laughs and kicks. Each region sends two fighters, Reimu and Marisa represent Gensokyo. Obviously all characters are still little girls.

Contestants would include a medieval knight who devotes herself to her beloved princess (who also participates in the fight and is secretly a werewolf) and tries to marry her despite both of them being female, a clumsy naga and a tsundere descendant of Garuda asked to watch over her (she'd secretly love the naga, but wouldn't dare admit it since in India birds are supposed to be the hated enemies of snakes), a mambabarang (Philippine witch right out of Extravaganza, famed for breeding swarms of ghostly insects inside people) commanding her polong/pelesit servitor pair (a polong is a small spirit that lives in a bottle and drinks her master's blood as compensation for doing pretty much nothing, a pelesit is a demon cricket under the polong's command that burrows inside people and drives them insane. ), twin priestesses of Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca who genuinely believe the sun runs on blood and so on.

Anime production studio ufotable (Manabi Straight!, Kara no Kyoukai) has announced its participation in the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Animate specialty store’s mascot character Anime Tenchou. The 10th anniversary celebration will consist of 10 projects. Ufotable will produce at least two of them: the first and third.

Project 01 is an “Anime Tenchou Gekijouban” (Anime Manager Movie) commercial. Project 03 will be a short “Anime Tenchou Collabo 10-ban Shoubu Round 1″ anime featuring both Anime Tenchou and characters from the massively popular doujin shooting game franchise Touhou Project. This will be the first Touhou anime produced by a major commercial anime studio. Both short anime will premiere on November 20 at the ANIMATE Ichioshi Bishoujo Matsuri publicity event in Tokyo.

Touhou Project creator ZUN has responded to the announcement saying that the Anime Tenchou/Touhou anime cross-over is a “derivative work” which he recognizes and allows but has no involvement in.
