Yes. Oni come in tons of variations, and actually rather few of them are truly huge. Most stop at being slightly larger than a human, but no more.

Granted, haven't read about a lot of plain oni that were *smaller* than the average human, but there are variations that are.

Huge oni tend to be little more than animals and - despite their overwhelming strength - easily taken down after being outsmarted. The smaller ones tend to be more cunning.

Yes and no. It fits so-so, but the more cunning oni are known to enjoy putting up an act for their own amusement.

And yes, there are oni that are portrayed as being on friendly terms with humans, although usually from a distance rather than openly. For example, the guardians of Okinawa are oni.

As for oni society, it's an important point to remember that oni are mythical creatures. On one hand, they are considered unchanging forces of nature - on the other, their portrayal reflects the society that portrayed them.

In other words, it varies. More commonly oni are portrayed as loners, or following a vaguely defined clan system. In the Sengoku era, folklore tended to portray oni as forming war bands more often. Nowadays, popular culture experiments with "underground societies" of oni, that are generally peaceful.

I'd say we might have to wait another 500 years or so before we can get a definite answer to how oni are portrayed today.
