Which Touhou game has the best soundtrack?

>> No.6407075

IaMP. No really, that's probably the best answer you'll find.

>> No.6407070

>>6407064

It all depends on your own taste. They all have good soundtracks.

>> No.6407079

Subterranean Animism has the best overall.

PCB has the best soundtrack in terms of integration with the game; it fits the mood of the game incredibly well.

All the others (EoSD, IN, MoF) are good too. None are really "bad".

UFO didn't exist.

>> No.6407093

>>6407079

Fuck you. Captain Murasa, Emotional Skyscraper. Sealed Cloud Route and Sky Ruin were absolutely awesome.

>> No.6407096

I like most of the PCB and IN soundtracks.

Let's avoid another "My tastes>your tastes" shitfest, guys.

Instead, say why exactly you like a particular track.

>> No.6407117

They have to fit the danmaku patterns. Like changing as the battle goes on.

When a hard pattern starts the chorus comes in, etc.

Of course the timing can't be exact but it always is close enough. I also like songs with organ.

>> No.6407123

Mountain of Faith.
Candid Friend and Native Faith elevate it to God Tier.

>> No.6407131

I think Awakening of the Earth Spirits is the best Touhou title screen... tied with Evening Sky.

>> No.6407133

>>6407093
I agree. UFO soundtrack isn't that bad. Not my personal favorite but yeah, just because of Emotional Skyscraper it cant be a bad soundtrack. Seriously, this theme is one of the most "emotional" in all the serie.

Also, Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship and UFO romance in the night sky are fucking catchy.

>> No.6407138

I like 7 and 11 alot. The only songs that stick out to me in IN are Lunatic princess and Keine's stage and theme, and in Mountain of faith it's only Sanae's stage and theme along with stage 4. IAMP is fantastic too.

>> No.6407144

>>6407070
This.

Personally, I love MoF. The Gensokyo the Gods loved plus every last boss theme being fucking epic. Candid Friend, Suwa Foughten Field, Native Faith, especially.

>> No.6407198

EoSD, although I am pretty sure it's the nostalgia goggles speaking through me. For some reason I am physically incapable of playing stages 3 and 4 without humming in sync with the tunes.Likewise Bridge People No Longer Cross.

Of course, all the boss tunes are on a level of their own so I didn't consider them.

This. Also, Hina's stage theme.

I really like IN too, though.

>> No.6408052 [DELETED]

I absolutely love IN soundtrack, from gentle gust of wind at the beginning of "Illusionary Night~Ghostly Eyes", till the final accords of "Eternal Dream~Mystic Maple". It creates a perfect atmosphere of lunatic summer night, which can compete only with the autumnal atmosphere of MoF.

IN has a godly soundtrack. sorry Mountain of Faith

>> No.6408079

I'd say MoF no contest. Not a single song in the bunch I dislike at all. A coupe were a bit weaker, but overall still strong entries. It's one of the reasons I've played it more than the other games.

>> No.6408085

UFO
It's very upbeat and video game-ish.

>> No.6408088

All of them, give or take.

Keepers are Centennial Festival for Magical Girls, U.N. Owen was her?, Satori Eye ~ Third Eye, Hartmann's Youkai Girl, Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind, Heian Alien and the Phantom Ensemble ones (TH07 and 09 mixes.)

>> No.6408091

PCB and IN, they have the largest number of songs I like
I like various songs from others, but none have as many good ones as those two

>> No.6408127

IN

>> No.6408677

I think Mountain of Faith has the most consistently strong soundtrack. The mood, I think, is a little more mysterious and a little more fantastic than other soundtracks in the series, and although there aren't any standout songs on the level of Cinderella Cage, Border of Life, or Fate of Sixty Years, all the songs blend together into one great whole.

>> No.6408860

>>6408729
I wasn't sure where to place the Aya music because DS is good but StB is right in the middle of the shift from the style used in IN and PoFV to MoF.

IN is just exhausting to listen to. 21 songs, and most of them have blasting horns. It still has it's moments, like Illusionary Night ~ Ghostly Eyes, Stirring an Autumn Moon ~ Mooned Insect, Retribution for the Eternal Night ~ Imperishable Night, Lunatic Eyes ~ Invisible Full Moon, and Voyage 1969/1970. Most of the other tracks have obnoxious-as-fuck horns or are just seemingly endless piano wankery sessions.

PoFV doesn't have the piano solos as bad, but the horns are at their worst in the series, and many other "alternative" versions are flat-out lazy. Aside from Adventure of the Lovestruck Tomboy, Oriental Dark Fight, and Flowering Night, it doesn't have anything spectacular to offer.

MoF, PCB and IN all had incredible music

EoSD, SA and UFO had awesome boss themes but the stage themes were not that catchy (with a few exceptions like Young Descendent of Tepes or Orin's stage theme)

I don't know what you see in Oriental Dark Flight. It's not especially catchy, it doesn't seem to go anywhere, it's just murky piano. Likewise with Flowering Night.

An odd compliment, I know, but it's one of the very few times where the percussion sections actually add something rather than just exist. Eh. I can see them being popular, but it doesn't really change how I view them.

Besides, I'm fairly certain a lot of the music in those polls are heavily influenced by the characters they represent, which is why both Stage 3 tunes raise my suspicions. Phantom Ensemble probably does deserve to be up there, though, and it's a nice song, but not something I like.

It's kinda like how I appreciate Mozart and his playful music, but do not enjoy listening to them.

The whole point of that poll was it was done of non-Touhou fans, for the exact purpose of removing the bias of characters. There were a lot of very popular (among the fandom) songs that were very low on the list, and a few complete dark horses hit the top (Chen's stage theme).

Unsurprisingly, SA is my favorite. I'm probably somewhat biased since I find it the most fun out of the main series STGs, but I can't think of a single track in the game that I skip over when listening to the soundtracks. Every other game has at least one or two tracks I skip over. Bonus points for Hartmann's Youkai Girl being simply amazing. As for the other main series Windows games:
2. UFO - Quirky and fresh.
3. IN - Great since I like ZUNpet. I can see why others would dislike it, though.
4. MoF - Solid, but I just don't like it quite as much as IN.
5. PCB - There's a few tracks here I just can't get into.
6. EoSD - There are some real gems, but sound quality takes EoSD straight to the bottom. My second favorite game, but being ZUN's first experience outside PC-98 sound makes for rather unpleasant listening outside the game. It's a shame really, since Locked Girl and Septette have so much potential.
