So I'm getting some stuff together, hope to be able to get a project rolling by later this month. Still doing a little research on appropriate paints and finishes and such. Might be able to start selling if the end results are high enough quality.

What kind of sculpt? Live Wear Yu has better hair, a forehead ridge to raise it up, and the hair is removeable, but Kawaii's faces look better (shorter, more anime looking face). Sigma's Ena looks even better (but more expensive). How about nice looking kigurumi glasses? I'd buy it if you just sold those. Along with that have glasses compatible ears on the mask.

If you want to make a lot of them, you should invest in making the mold out of silicone for easy removal. The eyes are photo paper held on with putty. Behind the eye slits at the inside corners are a black mesh. Inside are pieces of foam in specific areas. The shape of the mask is actually a set of ratios and measurements of the proportions of the parts. The mouth is a (red) mesh and the tongue is a piece of pink foam.

I assume if you're not trolling you're on Wyu's forum reading the tutorials?

what you describe is a kawaii mask. there are some differences based on maker. some makers the eyes are fiberglass too. also, the eyes aren't really photo paper, but a think piece of plastic with the eye image printed on them. as for mask fit....if you're making the mask yourself, it's actually a lot better. bought masks are a sort of "one size fits all" thing that doesn't alway fit nice and snug, even if you adjust the inside padding. making it yourself you can make a cast of your head and get a perfect fit on the mask. only some masks have a foam tongue. others the tongue is part of the fiberglass

I did a trade (engine/trans for a car) with a friend with mask making experience to make me a kig mask, but after 6 attempts he just couldn't make it not look retarded. I ended up telling him to forget it since I changed my mind about doing a female character (I'm a dude). Respect for anyone who didn't just pay $$$$ for a Japanese mask maker to make theirs.

Well there were a few websites I gathered for him to use as a guide and many pictures of good kig and bad kig to know what to avoid, but this was about a month or two after kig threads first started to appear in /jp/ so the amount of information was limited since kig in Japan was very tight knit still (no idea if it still is). If there is decent guides or some information that you can link me it would be appreciated. He told me he would be willing to give it another try since he still has the negative of my face to build on.

It would hang on your face? Usually there's a piece of cloth covering the back of the mask opening that ends up being under the back of your head. You turn the mask onto your face to put it on so you slip under it. Then the mask sits on your head and there's foam wherever you might touch the mask.

It would have a similar mounting like you described but the custom face mold would of made it "click" into place and lock it securely from rotating or coming off-center. Most use foam blocks and such, this would have made the mask a bit more 'personal' I guess.

having a negative mold of your head is a very good idea, quite a few japanese kigs that make their own mask do this. it's the diffference between a generic "one size fits all" and one that actually conforms to your head with no large gaps on the sides. as for the actual coverage of the mask, that can very too. the minimum is 50% (just the face), which you can attach to your head with straps and clasps. this is probably the best method if you want the mask to fit tight, and also the easiest if you don't know much with wigs, since you can pretty much just use a regular wig this way. the most common is the "3/4", where it goes to right around that bony part on the back of your skull, or a little bit past it. these rest easiest, since they cover all of the top of your head, but depending on how low you have the back can be hard to attach hair to....generally building a mesh on the back helps extend the coverage of the hair. rarest is probably "full head" masks, since these have to be built in 2 pieces, and it can be tricky to create a stable and strong connection between the 2. i've seen several 3/4s masks that have plastic pieces in the back that more or less make the mask a full head mask...>>6406321 is a good example...usually just used for the case of having hair that's tied up in pony tails or pig tails or whatever.

though wyu's tutorials are the easiest to access because they're in english, the japanese ones cover a lot more stuff, and usually the pictures are enough to get a good idea of what they are doing, if not the exact materials they use.
