But hey, just think of it like this. You're bored and browsing through YouTube, and you come across a gaming video with something nice and a catchy tune on the background. Doujin game = self-published game, usually sold in things like Comiket and similar events. Some of them can just be downloaded at the homepage of their maker, like Vanguard Princess and The World of The Hoollow God, and I don't think I've ever seen any of them sport any kind of DRM.

I saw it before touhou, but only after I started playing the games did I realise it came from touhou.

it's not that games with single creators don't exist outside of japan. it's just that those games usually suck. one circle making a game does not make it more 'self published' than one company making a game.

Ran Ran Ru was my first exposure to the name, but it wasn't until I saw Mountain of Faith on some other website that I actually played a Touhou game, and it wasn't until about a year later that I found a translation patch for MoF that I actually got into the characters and started playing the rest of the games.
