I'm not sure this fits 100% here, but it's the closest board I could think of for it. Does anyone else here practice their moonspeak by playing online games with Japanese players?

I've been playing FF14 in a JP guild lately (it's a shitty game, let's not bother arguing about the game itself) to practice my moonspeak, and it's been pretty interesting so far. I'm wondering if my experiences so far mirror what Jap players are generally like in other games (if any of you have any experience with them).

The first thing I noticed is that everyone is insanely polite. My linkshell usually has about 35-40 people online at a time, and in two weeks of being there I've never seen a single argument or any harsh language used against anyone. If anyone needs help, a bunch of people always immediately offer to provide it.

One thing that actually gets kind of annoying is that they're so polite that whenever someone logs on and says 'good morning' or 'hello', EVERYONE online replies 'good morning' or 'hello'. Everyone. The entire screen is spammed with 30+ hellos. Likewise when someone leaves for the day and says goodbye, the screen is spammed with like 30 "good work, see you later".

The atmosphere is nice, but it feels choking at times, like you wish people would let loose and mess around a little more. Have you had different experiences with JP players, where they let loose and are less polite, or a little more random/freewheeling?

well that's kind of how it is in japanese society too.
choking as it may seem, it's kind of nice and people aren't as immature.
My experiences with japanese players have been similar, I prefer it over 14 yr old american kids talking stupid.

And sometimes I wish /jp/ followed jp-like manners, but who am I kidding.

Will it be /jp/ related if I post Touhou and complain about how irl women are 3DPD bitches & whores?

Japanese bros in online games are usually extremely nice. That sounds pretty normal.

You say goodnight in Hotglue guild chat and they would probably call you gay and then hack you and steal your account/credit card info.

One kind of nagging issue I have is that I asked a few of the JP players I'm most close to if they could please correct my Japanese when I make major errors.

They pretty much never do. I think it's because they think it's rude to point out errors in a foreigner's Japanese, as long as they can still understand what I was trying to say.

Also, when someone who doesn't know me in the guild hears I'm a foreigner, they immediately where I'm from, usually asking "Oh, Korean or Chinese?" and then seem shocked when I'm American. I can't figure out if this is because LOL 'MURICANS ARE DUMB or if it's because that's who most of the foreigners they talk to are from.

Is this still Mabinogi we're talking about, or another game?

The latter. Koreans and Chinese always play MMOs and the Japanese would assume the foreigner was Asian at least.

I'm pretty sure it's because they are polite, but they're not doing it to be your buddy, the whole language correcting thing, manners and friendship are separate.

It's probably because they expect more korean or chinese people, they probably aren't thinking of an american playing with them. And it's probably not the same thinking as "LOL 'MURICANS ARE DUMB", but definitely not positive.

I played Maple Story with some Japanese people for awhile. They were just as chill.

I played FFXI with a Japanese HNM LS guild. Sometimes I would fall asleep because we would be raiding til about 3am their time, which is like 10am mine. I have actually fallen asleep a few times during raids, but thankfully, I am DPS so no one dies.

Japs are usually really nice and polite but can be real elitists too. Back when I used to play ffxi, I knew a few japs I used to party with and even do raids with. Most of them know basic english, and as long as you know what you're doing it's fine. Even though I was in the group with them they would refuse to invite any other english speakers.

It seems like they're nice to people in their circle and dicks to everyone else.

Yeah, I wish I had known enough moonspeak to play FFXI back before FFXIV came out. Honestly FFXIV is an awful game in the state it's in right now, and I can barely motivate myself to log on anymore.

I want to make my Lv.16 Lancer a spear? Okay, you'll need Lv.21 Goldsmithing for that! Not to mention materials from pretty much every profession, and there's no auction house so you've gotta go around checking everyones' bazaars... The hell kind of design is that, SE?

Anyway, I tried to see if I could pull some strong opinions out of a couple of the LS members yesterday by asking when what they thought about the U.S. military presence in Japan, but they were surprisingly calm about it. Answer was basically "We complain about them sometimes, but we don't want them to leave completely, because there's North Korea and China to worry about"

I'd love to play this for some practice, do you need the japanese version to be able to use an IME and interact with Japanese players?

>> No.6277634

>>6277621
I haven't played the release version but in beta you could just turn on the IME and it'd work natively. Much unlike FFXI where I had to use the Japanese POL which would then set the rest of the game in Japanese (everything besides names) and allowed the typing of Japanese characters. They didn't have Windower back when I played.

Also in the setup program you can change the interface to Japanese and the game itself will be in Japanese if you want to learn the names of things as they appear.

>> No.6277643

>>6277621
No, but even if you did you can change the locale in the settings to play with the Japanese interface.

I wouldn't suggest it honestly. FFXIV is a BAD GAME. It's not fun. It's probably best to search for a more fun game to try this in...I'm probably not renewing next month.

I hate this shit too.

It's such a blatant timesink with a monthly cost.

>> No.6277678

I don't know how they expect people to keep playing it til they add more content.

I'll revisit it in March when the PS3 version comes out but I'm not optimistic.
