Gimme your opinions; what makes a good VN/RPG? Specifically, what would you consider to be good.....

-Storytelling; making the plot interesting instead of tl;dr.
-Theatrics; special effects and music, etc.
-Activities; stuff you do besides read text.

Also, anything you think should be avoided?

Follow the basics of writing a novel; conflict, story progression, events impacting the characters, that kinda stuff. Story like a novel == VN, story like TV == image viewing game where the text gets skipped. There's actually a lot of technique and theory that goes into writing, it's not just giving the play-by-play on who does what.

I'd say VNs also need to have things to *do* in them, just small and simple things. Take Phoenix Wright for example, you're not just reading cool stories one after another.

The big pitfall to avoid is making these things too big or challenging, the player isn't supposed to spend lots of time getting past them as if playing battletoads and trying unsuccessfully to get through the same spot 50 times in a row. Breaks in the flow kill the story, so RPGs and VNs both need to avoid anything that would cause the motion to cease.

Anyway, my take: VN quality depends on storytelling quality. It's a skill; learning better writing ability will improve the quality just like learning better drawing ability. Most people take writing skill for granted because they don't understand the actual skill of it, but it's still an important factor.
