I have been faithful to the same 3d custom waifu for two years now. But I'm starting to run out of new ways to play dress up doll with her, 40GB mods torrent notwithstanding.
I recently found out that it's easy to export 3DCG saves to mikumikudance, which has much more intuitive posing controls, but less overall control over facial expressions, and different shaders. I prefer this to 3DCG's posing mode, now.

3DCG mods: http://deadfrog.fapis.com/entry.html?id=13927 - Get this 41GB torrent. Read the comments on fapis, people made useful resources to deal with the madness. (Or you can just dump all the mods in your arcs folder).

Mikumikudance: http://www.geocities.jp/higuchuu4/index_e.htm - get the version with the biggest version number (7.11). Ships with some vocaloid characters.
MMD models: http://www6.atwiki.jp/vpvpwiki/ - provides downloads, but all hosted on those slow, unreliable, and 403-prone "uploader" systems the Japanese love.
MMD usage: The videos on the official site are a good starting point. http://mikudan.web.fc2.com/ provides tutorials.

Converts 3DCG characters to MMD.
Make a hard save of your girl in 3DCG by clicking ctrl+save. The save file will have a green background.
In tso2pmd, drop the png save on the blue area, click the bottom button to convert.
You should be able to figure out the rest of the interface without knowing the language, but here are a few things I've figured out:
The right button of the first tab allows you to remove some parts from the character, the radio buttons letting you choose the level of granularity. For example, you have more granularity than in 3DCG. For example, you can remove a necktie from a shirt, etc).
The left button of the first tab previews the character. Useful when you remove parts or change the proportions (fourth tab).
The third tab allows to enable IK for the arms, but it doesn't seem to work as intended. The radio button zones allow respectively to set up how much the hair, breasts, and skirt are affected by the physic engine - from not at all, normally, more than normal.

Brotips:
- If you try to make animations: don't ever forget to "register" your bones manipulation. They are deleted forever if you change frames.
- You can export props from 3DCG independently of characters. Just use the "invisible body" 3dcg mod, or if you don't have it, delete the body in tso2pmd to leave only the item. It will mess up the physics unless you bend the invisible body creatively, however.
