To make it brief it is related to traumatic events. Notice how almost every character with all white hair has something that happened in his/her past on japanese games, anime, etc.

The doujinshi you're all talking about is called "False Bamboo Sprout in the Miso Soup EXtend" by Can't Fix the Helmet. It is pretty good.

Actually I would go so far as to say that nearly everything Can't Fix the Helmet has made has been good.

I remember reading a doujin that interpreted her childhood as extremely neglected after her father became enchanted by Kaguya. Mokou was ordered to stay inside to avoid causing complications with her father's courting of Kaguya, sometimes being locked inside so there would be no risk of her being seen. As time progressed, she became locked inside more and more frequently, eventually being forgotten entirely. She gets broken out of the house by some visitors a few years later, blames Kaguya for stealing her father and ruining her life, goes to disrupt the elixir delivery, and the rest is established canon.

With that, the whitening could be placed anywhere at all.
