6201314 No.6201314 [Reply] [Original]

http://www.carpefulgur.com/

Recettear sold over 26,000 copies in just 4 weeks, /jp/. Is this a good or a bad thing? I mean, it's definitely an opportunity for more doujin games to get localized, but given Carpe Fulgur's rule of no H games ever and the fact that it's clearly kicking the ass of any competition it might have (Mangagamer, for example) might mean the spread of the dreaded SA-style "you can't do that on the internet" attitude, which is never a good thing.

What do you think?

>> No.6201323

A group succeeds, clearly nobody will try to compete with them? That's some shaky logic there. Even people are willing to compete with Microsoft.

I really don't care. H scenes are more often than not pretty bad, and such games will almost always be fringe-oriented anyway, hence not officially translated. So yeah, whatever.

>> No.6201331

Yeah, Mangagamer translates commercial VNs, these guys translate doujin games. Just because both are featured on /jp/ doesn't make them the same market.

>> No.6201333

It's nor good nor bad. It happened to catch the normals' attention by being on a popular game distribution service and being slightly different than the usual shooter fare. The goons that translated it know very well this won't happen a second time because the public reaction will be 'oh another one of those weird Japanese games, I'll pass since the last one wasn't anywhere as entertaining as hyped'.

There's no reason to compare the goons with Mangagamer because they translated a little JRPG with a twist while Mangagamer translates what are essentially books. You won't find a book with pictures attracting normals' attention the way Recettear did.

So, for /jp/ and visual novels this whole thing means roughly nothing.

The memes they created for the viral are the most irritating. Yatta doesn't translate as 'Yayifications,' and 'Capitalism Ho!' was also something they made up to suit their tactics. Looking at how much retarded shit they made Recette say that doesn't really come off as unusual or dumbass dialogue in the raw, they changed the tone of her character around enough to bother me, and it was for the purpose of creating memes to astroturf and viral market. That's a fucked up marketing strategy that shows they don't give a shit about their customers other than maximizing the number shelling out.

Right, because any attempts of localizing a word that does not come off as a exact replica of the original japanese meaning, which is near impossible in most cases, means it's sure a shift in direction towards viral market, coming from a group that wasn't expecting to make more than 5k units.

Sure thing bro. Even Atlus when localizing games resort to made up expressions every once in a while, hell fucking Phoenix Wright has this shit. I scanlate, I understand the difficulties inherent in the translation process, but I also understand the ethical integrity that SHOULD be required when you're telling people that you translated something for them and they have no way of confirming whether or not you just rewrote it to suit yourself.

It is very obvious to anyone who has played the game that it is not, and that there is nothing wrong with the translation. But if some people actually prefer a nearly-machine translated script full of awkward lines like "I guess it can't be helped," then they have the right to complain that "yatta" wasn't translated" as "yay" every time she says it, as retarded as that makes them. You have to expect that anything remotely popular is going to be trolled, especially on /jp/ - my argument here is that the fact that people complain that the script is "full of memes" is absolutely ridiculous.
