As much as it could possibly work, it would. Basically, someone who loves the character enough to give up their own existence and become it to make it real would be helped along by a professional experienced in guiding someone's delusions towards a desired result. This person would be supported by a group of other people who love the character just as much and who have either done the same thing or are willing to.
