On the subject of insanity, one of my favorite alternative interpretations of Flandre was in the Tohonifun doujin Break. Flandre sees the pointlessness of fighting, but Remilia is driven by her pride and cannot understand her, and can only interpret it as Flandre being insane, and then locking her up, which then may have resulted in the actual insanity, or maybe it never happened. Remilia is the one with issues.

Remilia was previously fighting Ran (who is an ultra-badass in this series) and is now fighting Yuka, Yukari, Yuyuko, and more all by herself, and actually winning (this was set in the past before they properly developed their powers). Meanwhile, Flandre fought Mokou and Kaguya and was about to lose due to immortality hax but was saved by Meiling, who actually incapacitated both Kaguya and Mokou due to sneak attack and pressure point. The youkai are fighting for surpremacy in the savage land of ancient gensokyo, and the battles are gory and grim as this was long before the Spellcard system and tea drinking, in a dark age where the strong lived and the weak were eaten, and youkai ruled the land with terror and conquests. Flandre is telling Remilia to stop here, but Remilia can't comprehend the concept of not fighting anymore as it is the definition of vampires to fight and fight and keep fighting, to prove themselves the strongest. Thus, Remilia is unable to understand Flandre and her only explanation for why she doesn't want to fight and kill anymore is that she must be insane, and it breaks her to think her sister, the only other remaining vampire, is broken. Presumably this is what caused her to then lock Flandre away.

Quite the ironic twist from Flandre.

According to Remilia raison d'être is to be the strongest. Its a psychological and biological drive that keeps them going. As a vampire you can't stand to have people who are superior to you. Flandre is batshit insane from any vampire's perspective because she didn't care about power or status.

Just like how humans are social beings who live to meet others and procreate, Vampires are dominating beings who live to dominate and be the top of the food chain. Just like how secluding yourself and not caring about females makes /jp/ austic, Flandre not giving a fuck makes her something like an austic vampire.

Yukari is only friends with Yuyuko because she loved the OLD Yuyuko who sealed herself beneath that tree. The new Yuyuko isn't the same person but Yukari is having trouble acknowledging this. She talks to Reimu about it and Reimu explains that to her Yuyuko is just Yuyuko, she doesn't even know her history or what she used to be like. In the end of the doujin Yukari comes to terms with the fact that the Yuyuko she knew is dead and that if she wants to have a relationship with the new Yuyuko she has to treat her as a separate person.

There was one I really liked where Marisa leaves Gensokyo for what is years to her but only months in Gensokyo and comes back looking crazy badass. She meets up with Reimu, although she thinks it must be Reimu's daughter because she's been away forever and figures Reimu must have aged too and then fights Yukari for some reason.
I'm currently away from my own computer, so I can't rattle names off or get the cover pages. I'll provide them when I get back to my laptop. There are quite a few that examine the characters in a way I find really interesting.
For instance, there's one where Sakuya gives in and becomes a vampire. Rather than action, the whole comic is about Meiling discovering Sakuya's motivation and emotion under those conditions.
Or one where Flandre escapes, seeking out the one she idolized and sought to once again "play" with. Trouble is, Marisa's dead. It's been like 60 years since the events of EoSD. Remilia has to go and return the loose canon. Not terribly deep, but emotionally intense.

There was another a few days ago that hoped on the origin of Yamame as a spider that ate the corpses of a village that would throw their elderly/sickly into a crack in the earth. It's smut too but it's actually an engaging read.

They've done others - a rework of how Yukari & Yuyuko met. Can't stand the artstyle but they spin good stories.

Obligatory mention of Scarlet & Scarlet for most badassed fight ever in a Touhou doujin. Also tied in with a pretty good characterization of the SDM crew.
