I'll agree with that much, although shitty because it was rather bland and uninspired. Then again, it was originally released back in the Sega Genesis days from what I remember, and back then the RPG genre was still only just coming into its own.

I just realized that I spent most of my summer going back and playing older JRPGs.

Eternal Blue was awesome. I remember getting it on accident as a birthday present. The game I wanted wasn't in so my mom got EB for me as a replacement. Best mistake ever. Great ride all the way through, and the epilogue section after the main game added a good deal of extra play time and wrapped things up nicely.

Went back and played Breath of Fire III again recently. Another RPG that I loved years ago. I even remember skipping school once to stay home and play it. Dragon system was incredible to me at the time. I wish they'd make another BoF, especially since I'm one of the few out there that liked Dragon Quarter.

Dug out my Dreamcast and fired up Grandia II. Quite possibly my favorite JRPG ever. Great battle system, entertaining characters, and a nice story. It blew me away the first time I played it. Downloaded the first one off of PSN and loved that too.

Still need to finish Suikoden 5. Every time I start it up I get overwhelmed by the sheer amount of things to do and end up playing something else. One day I'll sit myself down and finish it, as I do enjoy it every time I turn it on.

Also, while not exactly "old" I started playing the first Ar Tonelico recently. Not too far, but I'm liking it at the moment. How are the other ones in the series?

Persona doesn't have roleplaying, it doesn't matter what you choose, your social link will level up anyway. It might take a little longer if you are a dick, but that is it, or you might be just friends with a girl instead of lovers in Persona 4, but that is like saying Tales of Symphonia has roleplaying. Well, that's assuming you leave Gensokyo as is.
You'd have to shake it up, otherwise it would be too predictable. You'd just go game by game conquering factions.
The best option would be some kind of cataclysm, maybe the barrier weakened and Gensokyo merged with another world partway. That way you could break up the factions some, the disaster spreading everything to the four winds. Sort of like the cataclysm in FF3/6.
After all you'd need to provide some kind of impetus for every Touhou to work together anyway, and give a main character (hurr Reimu) a reason to gather everyone and restore order.
That way there'd be infighting along the way; like Remilia would probably try to use the disaster to make a power grab, but the SDM may not be whole. Meiling might be guarding a human village now in exchange for food and quarter. (Welcome to HumanVillage!)
I'd gladly write/design the shit out of the game, but I can't code or do sprite art.

I agree in general, though I do think newer jrpgs are a bit too otaku-ish. Like I said earlier, I loved Vesperia and Lost Odyssey, and since Suikoden is being discussed here I'll compare it to S2 (one of my favourite games so maybe I am a little biased) but in terms of plotline, I think Suikoden 2 is way better, but in terms of gameplay, both Vesperia and LO destroy Suikoden 2.

I need to get back to this. Had it since release but only put about ten hours into it before moving onto something else. Dub aside, I was enjoying it though, and I'm not sure why I stopped playing.

Maybe when I'm done with Ar Tonelico I'll get back to it. But Birth by Sleep comes out on Tuesday...Hmmm.....

It depends on your definition of JRPG.

If by JRPG you mean "standard fantasy setting where you're the son of a legendary hero, embark on an epic journey recruiting allies from various subcultures along the way while enjoying turn-based combat and random encounters" then yes, the genre has been on life support this entire generation. At least there will always be the Dragon Quest series.

If by JRPG you take the more literal approach and mean "any type of RPG from Japan" then no, I do not think the genre is dying. If anything it's doing better than ever with games like Demon's Souls, a third-person RPG with a unique multiplayer experience, known for it's unforgiving difficulty and dark atmosphere; Monster Hunter, a cleverly disguised pseudo-MMO boss rush that relies more on your skill, tactics, and knowledge rather than your time spent grinding to get a statistical advantage; and Valkyria Chronicles, an SRPG/FPS hybrid that's probably the first time the entire SRPG genre has ever felt like it was pushing forward and evolving rather than just copy/pasting the same rules and mechanics that have been around for ages.

They are the same people who say Monster hunter is difficult, in both of those games you simply have to proceed with caution and memorize enemy movements.

I played WA3 once, but got stuck in one of the dungeons.Granted I was playing a bunch of other games, it got swept into the wayside. And I was still in the early parts so the story hasn't picked up yet so I lost interest.

Need to get back to it someday. Probably the one that represents the Wild, Wild West theme the best.

Infinite Space (DS) and Nier (PS3) were the two good JRPGs I played and enjoyed this year.

The battle system killed it for me.

Seriously, it was all:

back, back , back
forward, forward , forward
small attack (because the big one miss in 90% the cases)
defence
repeat

And the battle can take forever, even if you skip the whole animations. Yeah, the story seemed nice and the big space etc. but jesus fuck, what an annoying battle system.

I can't play a game with such shitty gameplay even if it has a nice story. I play games for gameplay, if I want a good story I read an ero or a book.

RPG Maker, if you don't mind SNES-level graphics and a lot of work to make the battle system not boring (by default, it's like dragon quest/shin megami tensei where you just see the enemies and not your party), but I've seen games where using a combination of battle background with sprites and attack animattion you could give the illusion of third-person classic view.
Must have been a hell to code though, and it allows zero party flexibility since the sprite are directly on the background.

>> No.6083431

>>6083335
I've seen some really nice stuff made with RPG Maker, though it's hard to tell if that's because of the program or the creator.
The packages' sprites, map tiles, menus, music, and sounds are basically designed for direct nostalgia appeal. Nothing really stands out as especially great, but that's not the point of it. It's just overall good quality stuff that might make you miss the SNES jRPGs.

I wish I could do it.
I've even been thinking about how it might be nice for it to not have equipment, and instead you find lost spellcards for new moves/stat boosts.
I also think there would have to be support characters instead of make everyone a full combat character.
I'd rather combat be more like Saga Frontier 1, with the LP system, so any random encounter system could be designed to be challenging rather than weak ass monsters mobbing you to wear you down. Maybe Saga Frontier style combos too, alongside Suikoden style combos.
