If you do go out, can you find this place and confirm if its real? There's a place called Nipponbashi aka Den Den town located near the Nipponbashi station. Its only couple of long, straight streets filled with shops. If you get there, find a street named "Sakai Avenue" and go behind it.

Do that after you've studied for a while so you can build upon your book-learning by applying what you know to everyday situations and learn from it. man if you're broke just buy the cheapest train ticket (usually 120 or 140 yen), ride your train to your destination, and simply walk through the ticket gate! If you follow someone closely sometimes the little bing sound doesn't even go off. Either way, no one is going to chase you or anything. And if they do just spout some English and look confused.

Be careful not to ride special reserved express trains though (they look different than the usual trains), because dudes will check your ticket on the train and make you pay.
