And the program itself is free, it's just the games aren't. Normally I'd pirate any game that I can because usually they're made by some company that I don't feel deserves my money, but in this case Steam is an extremely useful platform for indie developers to, even if only for a few days/weeks once in a while, sales-wise show up fucking faggots like EA on how to make good games people actually will gladly pay for.

I recall there was this thread asking /jp/ers about what they do these days, and someone tried to convince everyone to form a company from the folks in the thread.

There's a couple of engineers, accountants, and other folks that posted. We basically have MORE THAN ENOUGH MANPOWER to form our own company.

>When was the last time you used Steam? It's probably the best thing that happened to PC games since ever. Cheap prices and GABEN is a bro.

I'm only mildly conflicted in my opinion of Steam due to the fact that it's terrible DRM just like all DRM (and I could go into a long rant about it, but I won't), but the sales are sometimes pretty nice.

Of course, the biggest problem is how games you buy as a digital download are priced at retail on release, except that you don't have the game on a disc along with other physical contents that come in a retail box, making it utterly stupid to buy it anywhere but retail if you can get it at retail (add to the fact that you also then depend utterly on Steam's servers AND having Valve not go under, which it fucking will sooner or later, to ever install your game, whereas you can always install from your disc that you bought even if Troika Games goes under, which they did).

The point is that Steam still sucks, and I still hate it.

>>6052733
>There's your problem. Also there's steam sales every Wednesday and weekend. Plus big sales on Christmas and Summer.

Oooh, sales for games that should already be priced much cheaper because they don't even have the EXCUSE of claiming that the disc and box and manual and whatever else comes in the box requires cost and investment ahead of sales (and even then the price is inflated quite a bit, as production has improved in efficiency while cost of materials is also down unless you're still dealing in cartridges), whereas digital distribution requires absolutely none of that, but enjoy buying a fat wad of air for the same price as buying the game. I'm sure you don't FEEL like an idiot for it, even though you should.

From Gabe himself:

"My thoughts as a dev:

There is another point to make besides the fact that buying used games does not send money to the developer. Unlike the movies, we do not have a theatre release. That boxed copy on the shelf (or digital download) is our only means of revenue generation. This is why we love digital delivery. There are no used games on Steam.

You fail at reading comprehension. Even in the part you quoted it shows that I was talking about installing it. If you don't have the data, you can't install it. They need servers to give you that data to install. Think for a minute before you post. I never said anything about playing offline, yes, I know what they said in response to what you THOUGHT I said.

>>6057031
Oh, so you're one of those idiots who doesn't understand that a physical copy and digital copy are identical legally. You fail at basic economics as badly as any developer railing against used games.

You fail at thinking. The reference to a fat wad of air is that you bought the data alone only as can be downloaded from the exact company you bought. You can't buy at Steam and ask some other company to give you the download. It's a licensing issue among other bullshit (and I'm not arguing against that, it makes sense).

The difference is that you don't depend on the company being alive and having servers available to install with your physical copy.

Now, your comment on legality might indicate that because you bought it, you have the rights to the data, and can then download from any source (i.e. piracy) without legal repercussions, but that is utterly beside my point, and merely shows that you either are unable to think, or choose to attack a strawman because you can't deal with the point I actually made.

It's important to know the budgets of your clients! If you get those goddamned little girls, you're not going to be able to sell them anything over 300-400g. The merchant guild leader, on the other hand, almost invariably is capable of buying high priced goods

/v/irgin here, I've actually played the demo and I really enjoyed, but I'm still not too keen about the the price. Care to haggle, Gabe?

The "I don't even" bit happens at the very end of the demo, and was tacked on by the localization team. It's just Recette and Tear talking about downloading the full version of the game. Other than that, I saw no other memes.

In game, your main goal is make enough money every week/month or so to pay off your missing father's debt, or your house and everything you own is seized and you end up living in a cardboard box. You have enough money to start an item shop, which you'll run by the rules, "You have to spend money to make money," and "Buy low and sell high." Capitalism, ho!

Outside of managing the shop and scouring the markets for goods to re-sell, you can hire adventurers to go find items for you in dungeons, for a price. This part of the game plays kind of Ys, but maybe more watered down. The demo only has a poor, rookie swordsmen who's not opposed to eating grass for sustenance, Louie. You'll collect a lot of items from monsters and chests, and since Louie works for scraps, and there's no charge and almost no limit to the items you get, so you'll be turning a 100% profit from most dungeon crawling.

It's action, micromanagement and moe~ all blended together in the finest way possible.

People have had a problem with DRM for a LONG time. It's nothing new, and the problems are many, mostly varying on which DRM scheme is being implemented. Some install rootkits, which can be considered illegal when it is not mentioned or removable by option of the consumer (and that is a greater legal issue among software as a whole, not even just DRM). Some demand unnecessary conditions to even let you run the program, which is murky water (and as an example, Ubisoft's new implementation of DRM that requires you to be online to even play single player games as well as to save or load your game, which is again murky water when it's forced without choice).

I don't want to write more about DRM.

Alright, fed you.

Now on the more serious note, it'll be a little more tricky than that as I see it. Blizz stated that WoL is a fully-functioning game and you won't need expansions to continue playing multiplayer. But of course each expansion will bring an additional unit or two and will you be able to play with those who purchased it? Yeah, right. Buy it or play against other 'stone age' people.

Nowhere did I say that I work for Blizzard, but the pricing of the following two thirds of SC2 is sketchy at best. They say they'll be priced as expansions, but they're also standalone expansions/games, meaning you don't need to buy the Terran game that's out now, you can buy one of the other two at a later point. This is somewhat conflicting, and I highly doubt that they'll hold to their claim that you're touting.

>Implying that WoL campaign isn't longer than SC's and Brood War's

It isn't. Fact.

>Alright, fed you.

No, you're the one trolling, if anyone is, you idiot.

>But of course each expansion will bring an additional unit or two and will you be able to play with those who purchased it? Yeah, right. Buy it or play against other 'stone age' people.

That's the other issue. I'd hope that Blizzard would at least provide the 'expansion' benefits of extra units for free to anyone who has even one of the three games, instead of breaking it up into three tiers that make no sense for this game's distribution, but were fine for some of Blizzard's earlier games.

>Servers need money
It goes, or, more accurately, it should go without saying that if Valve goes under, you won't be able to play TF2. Not to the full extent anyways. But with offline mode and what-not, there is literally nothing stopping steam from being able to run Singleplayer games without online, short of closing steam, and even then most of them still work.

It's like saying don't buy an MMO because if company X goes under, you won't be able to enjoy it.

Barring that, what is it with saying Don't Trust Valve? What, are they evil now? In the past, they've done a pretty good job of listening to their fanbase and indulging them, and Valve have worked pretty hard to put up this whole indie "We are a company you can relate with" front, I don't really understand where people are getting this dastardly image of Valve forever deleting everyone's Steam account and somehow erasing every game installed on my hard drive for the sole reason of having an excuse to twirl their comical mustache around. It's ridiculous paranoia.

And no, I'm not defending DRM scams or video game companies desire to superglue their fingers to every single bit of property they can; because I agree with you on that, it's just that Valve thing that seems a little off.

That's why I responded the way that I did. The fact is that you clearly couldn't respond to what I had posted in the first place, relying on some strawman wholly unrelated to anything I had said. While you had a chance to post another response, this time actually dealing with what I said, you instead decided to troll. I guess it hit a nerve on your end that I saw through your idiocy.

The only reason I'm posting this in response instead of ignoring you is that it may be of some benefit to you in the future; that you might decide to either not say anything if it's just going to be pure idiocy or to not troll when you realize that your post was in fact idiotic and someone else recognized that as well.

>>Valve has stated that in the event steam dies, they'll give you time to back up all your games and they'll remove the DLC so you won't lose your shit.

>A likely story. Servers need money, and if Steam is dead, I doubt they'll be able to keep service for such a high load for a year (or even a month, and don't give me some ridiculously stupid shit about how a week should be enough time). Unless they've locked away part of their profits in an account that can only be opened when Steam goes under and can only be used to pay for servers for this purpose, and only if they can provide legal proof of that will I ever cede this point.

This is the ridiculous claim I set forth to correct. Now, the only reason Valve would have to maintain such servers isn't to upkeep what is indeed already installed on your computer, but rather to upkeep the extras that the thing installed on your computer gives you access to: Multilayer, DLCs, unlockables, derpy derpy doo. None of this would be particularly challenging to fix, and indeed, has already been fixed.

If anything, the character available in the demo erred on the side of overly-simple -- pretty much all the time I was just moving him around and using the basic attack. No sequences of buttons to hammer in, or anything -- most of what I was working on was how best to move so as to hit without being hit, how to handle multiple enemies and so on.

From reading the character list on the site, it looks like some of the other adventurers play a bit differently.

I also found that some of the entertainment and challenge of the dungeon-crawling was weighing up my health, how much stuff I had left to heal myself with, how far away I was from levelling up (you heal when you level up), how much space was left to carry stuff.

I'll tell you what's so special about it. The fact that a couple of SA goons got together and translated a doujin game is not particularly impressive in itself, but the game being the third best-selling game on Steam at the moment, with nearly zero advertising, while keeping in mind the niche crowd it's supposed to appeal to, is nearly mind-blowing. It just goes to show what a unique service steam is (I'm not defending DRM or anything, but no other similar service has come close to steam in terms of popularity, at least) and what unexplored opportunities for doujin game localization exist. If this keeps selling as well as it has been, it will do wonders for the localization of various titles simply because it's clearly showing how much Western interest there is for such games. Once most Japanese companies get their heads out their asses, we can well look forward to a future of fresh Japanese VNs and doujin games being translated and available nearly instantly. Or so I hope.

Absolutely not. Although there are currently no plans to have the game rated officially by the ESRB, we would anticipate getting an "E-10" rating in any event; the only "violence" in the game is of the bloodless kind, the "hottest" any character gets is showing a little stomach (as Tear and Charme do), and there is hardly any swearing.
