Sadly, the Japanese technology isn't compatible with US carriers, and it fucking figures though, pretty much all American phones are rounded because the majority of us are dumb and would end up cutting ourselves on sharp edges.

Update: 2 p.m. PT, April 23, 2010 — A Bloomberg report today notes that the iPhone has captured 72 percent of the Japanese market. While we understand critics’ skepticism in our original report, we would stress that when our report was written in February 2009, an analyst listed reasons for why he thought the iPhone wasn’t selling well: high price, lack of a video camera and support for multimedia messaging. All three of those shortcomings have now been addressed. Softbank gives away the phone for free, and Apple has added a video camera and support for multimedia messaging. The Bloomberg report further suggests that those moves were just what the iPhone needed to gain a foothold in Japan, which we also acknowledged in a report published August 2009.

They're giving away cheap phones with a contract, the last time I checked iPhone isn't really cheap. So basically they're getting an expensive phone for free if they sign some lousy contract. I would get an iPhone as well if there were such contract in my country where I'd get an expensive phone for free just for changing my operator.

My point still stands: iPhone fucking sucks in Japan because it doesn't cater to their advanced mobile infrastructure, read into it further if you're that concerned. High-end users go for high-tech phones while hipsters and the masses go for iPhone. And Japan is famous for bandwagoning with the latest fads and trends, iPhone is no different in this matter.

There are other phones, on the Japanese market, with resolutions as high or similar to the iPhone 4. Most flip phones, for example, don't even have as large screens and obviously don't have the same resolution but still very good for the screen size. Add to that they look better, feature much better camera's, and are cheaper, and it seems pretty simple to me. For the proc most of the specs don't give proc speeds, but if a regular phone is not using the same operating system as an OS, then there is nothing wrong with the proc being slower. As long as the phone is running fast, what does that matter?

Look, for those who don't know. (seems like most of you). Japan doesn't really have a huge market for "smart phones" like the rest of the world. The "regular" phones in Japan have always had "smart phone" features for some time now. Video calls, internet, wallet feature, high resolution screens and camera, games, apps, you name it. Regular phones have access to them, and then some (1-seg/12-seg digital tv).

The general consensus in Japan regarding the iphone is (at least pre 4g), was that "It's got inferior features and it's kinda weird to use but it's an apple product and stylish", then it caught the touch screen fetish. To prove this, I'll point out that the iphone initially only had 2g, while 3g internet was the standard in Japan for some time by then. People cared more about looks and brand than performance.

And I wish there was more discussion on Japanese phones and their superior features / examples of phones. I see a Korean phone, at least.

They put that in for liability purposes. I don't think you understand the exact flat in the iPhone 4, which is that even a light touch will completely cripple the phone's antenna. Other smartphone makers such as HTC and Motorola have internal antennas, which do not have the same issue. You may be able to block out the signal, but not under normal usage situations like the iPhone 4.

If the problem was that using internet on the iPhone would cause the connection to slow to a crawl, then that would be related. The reception thing, however, is just a general problem that can be easily fixed without modifying the phone at all.

>> No.5915602

>>5915592
Under certain conditions like having a very weak 3G signal, yes. Like anything apple related, positive or negative, it gets blown out of the water.

>> No.5915612

>>5915602
No, it doesn't matter what the signal strength is. Touching the gap will ground the antenna and kill the signal entirely.

>> No.5915616

Not so much "fixed" as "resolved", really. It won't be fixed until they release a new version that has some sort of protection over the antenna.

So applying a strip of electrical tape or some other thin-but-nonconductive-material would prevent the problem from occurring?

Exactly. They are offering free cases until september, which is when people speculate they will introduce a non-conductive coating into the manufacturing process which will address the issue

Honestly, I tried it out on a demonstration model and didn't experience any problems with internet access. I don't believe the people I see complaining are lying, but doing my best to reproduce the problem didn't work. It looks like it doesn't affect all devices.

Uhh, just so you know, you can use just about ANY Docomo model with a HyperSIM over here, as long as you have a service provider like AT&T or T-Mobile. . .you know, someone with a SIM card.

My current phone is an SH906i in black, and my last phone was a software unlocked Samsung 707SC II. Everyone is right though, if you want to use it for anything other than calls, SMS, and pictures, don't get one. Even when they start coming factory unlocked, this won't change.
