The <Hellstone>, an obsidian rock that does fire and dark damage. Not even considered for use because it does fire damage.

The <Fishtank Decoration>, coral rock even worse than a regular rock, but it improves fishing skill.

Currently playing Lich/Wizard

I highly recommend you take a race other then Lich. Perhaps Yerles instead, spellbooks do not come easy at all and the ancient books I need to get into the mages guild seem to be even more rare then usual in this version, you will pretty much be a gimped pianist if you go pure wizard right from the get go so get a race that can do some support to get you money or be a caster race/pianist instead and work on your magic eventually.

Rods/Scrolls of Mana and a high level Magic Arrow are a necessity for any combat at all. No matter how high your mana gets it will never be enough, and no matter how awesome elemental spells become you will need magic arrow to do anything.

>> No.5906483

>>5906437
Playing Lich is a good decision. That 140 mana score means you'll have 40% more mana than most other races. The 20% less health doesn't pose a problem at all since constitution is so much easier to increase than magic. Plus, liches come with some resistance feats which, while not much, are still better than what other races get. Liches make the second best pure casters after fairies and the best hybrids.

If you pick a horrible race like yerles (90 mana is not caster friendly), you'll soon find that you aren't much of a mage, what with casting 3 times before depleting your mana bar and all.

>> No.5906505

>>5906483

That extra mana doesn't seem to do much for me considering I still need about three times my mana if I want to do any dungeoning at all. I am using tons of mana scrolls anyway and the yerles would of made getting Jeweler/Gardening/Mining much easier while building up my literacy and such.

While I do like the bonuses lich gives me it is a massive chore to do anything and I am level 10 with no end to this in sight.

After cleaning the floor I finally found the Fairy again, I was pissed. She stole my money, my kills and my loli companion.

I readied my fists, threw all my items on the floor and started punching her, the bitch teleported every time and healed herself, I used hero potions, rods of slow, threw a few silence and weaken bottles to no avail, my 2d6+3 just wasn't enough.

Eventually I ran out of food and energy, I went back to the town and with the little gold I had left managed to hire an adventurer with a steel claymore, we went back to the dungeon and there she was, sitting on the corpse of my imouto.

Playing lich/wizard now, in the end i resorted to cheating infinite spell stocks and 300 meditation.

Running out of mana is absurdly easy even with the +25% MP feat and spell stocks are not enough even with the mages guild.

1000 spell stocks takes quite a bit of money and time to obtain and it doesnt even last you 100 casts...which is what mid level combat WILL require.

You are vastly overestimating the yerles bonus. It's great for the first 20 or 30 levels, but when leveling slows down it's a drop in the ocean. Mages take a bit of patience to start, but once you're past this hurdle you won't regret it.

To solve mana problems, try to expand your mana bar even more. With 5 points in the magical feat, you'll have 165% mana. Doing the magic fruit quest increases this to 168%. Turning in 10 little sisters for yet more magic fruit will put it at 180%, which is twice what yerles start with.

And make sure to level meditation, a huge mana bar that restores at the speed of continental drift isn't a solution. Never run around with a full mana bar. If you have mana, practice some buffs or heals. Or read a tough book that's likely to fail and drain your bar. What I did was reserve a metric ton of holy shield spellbooks from the mages' guild and always cast it while doing quests or moving between towns and such. Not only did this put my regeneration to about 50/turn, I also got my holy shield to around +120 pdef.

Then you're doing it wrong. The only time I really run out of gold is when a traveling merchant has a badass item that I just HAVE to buy, and it costs hundreds of thousands of gold. You might have to stock up on books, practice memorization, practice casting (get a monster in a sand bag, and have at it until you deplete stocks), read more books to practice those stats, and then descend into dungeons.

After all, only a fool thinks they can master wizardry in the depths of a dungeon without practice. That's one of the things I love the most about rogue-likes and Elona.

If you are RELYING on bells/quicklings/ultra-fast pets to win the game for you, I'm going to laugh my ass off when you come up to room loaded with Poison Hounds, because they will all die and you're probably going to follow them soon since you can't fucking train yourself because your pets are beasting everything for you.

Try getting two bells. the two bells continuously shoot vanity, if you have melee underlings that do decent damage, it makes the process faster, vanity will be too busy try to chase one of the two bells to attack the melee units. Also, only use ranged weapons, stay at least 4-5 tiles away, on the opposite to the side any of your bells are on, because he somehow tries to chase you if you manage to land a successful hit on him, so he's gonna go after you, or one of the bells, and keep on disregarding the melee. It's going to take a while but that's how I ended up killing him without triggering ragnarok on a couple of my games.

It's not about that, it's how Two-Hand skill works.

Typically, a weapon needs to be over 3.5-4s to be wielded two handed. Otherwise, it's too light.

For a fairy that can't wield anything over 1s, this is a problem. Sure, they could dual wield it, but a claymore's meant to be about two-handed weapons, dual wielding's a thief's business.

The point is to start with Greater Evasion and stats for great dodge bonus to the Fairy race (as well as the very high Fairy speed). You can start as a Fairy Claymore and go on to be a Wizard in practice (though I'd suggest starting as a Fairy Wizard so you have higher magic-based stats). Or, you can start as a Fairy Claymore and play a thief-like character.

The damage isn't that problematic if I have plenty of powerful potions, since I'm pretty tanky. The real problem is the self-healing, which guarantees his survival unless I can deal out over 1/4th of his life in a single blow.

Thrown potions definitely aren't 100% guaranteed to inflict their status effects. I threw about 5 potions of silence at him, of those, 3 hit and he resisted the hex every time. Once he closed distance I quit bothering with thrown potions and took up my scythe.

I also have no pets; not like they'd even survive the first blast anyway.

It depends on what skills you want, and what kind of character you want to play.
The best suggestions that anyone can use are the following:

Negotiation (with levels, reduces cost to buy and increases amount from selling - trained every time you buy or sell, so get it early).

Weight Lifting (whenever burdened, you train it, and with levels it increases the amount you can carry - so get it early).

Sense Quality (whenever getting an item, it attempts to identify it, as well as identifying it slowly over time - with levels identifies more upon pickup, makes the need to identify with spell or merchant less necessary - so get it early).

Eye of Mind (increases chance of landing a critical hit - may as well get it early).

Anatomy (increases the chance a corpse or another body item drops from an enemy - trained whenever killing an enemy - so get it early).

Hopefully that helped.
Beyond that, I can't say unless you tell me what kind of character you want to be. Mage? Get magic skills. Warrior? Get combat skills. Archer? Get ranged skills.

Yep. One thing to do is take a rod of teleportation, a rod of summon monsters, food, your instrument, and go up to the sister's mansion. Find the one that sells lunches made with love (generally inside the mansion) and zap the summon monsters rod near her. She'll summon a TON of younger sisters that will appreciate even the crappiest music. Now, find the sister that sells the lunches again (might take a while, but this is important). Zap her with the teleport rod so that she isn't around you when you perform in the mansion.

Sit back and play play play until you get to about 20 performer (it would be a good idea to spend a ton of platinum before you even start to get potentials high - don't worry about that since you'll get it back by doing Party Time! quests).

Fuck Insanity. It cannot be stopped. If you are fighting tough enemies (Greater Race of Yith, Spiral King, Shub Niggurath come to mind) that can make you insane, you will always die a horrible death because you can't fucking do anything.

And guess what else? You can be driven insane with 0 sanity, so no, Unicorn Horns aren't even going to help you. Supposedly resistance to Mind helps, but even with #####+, I find myself going insane at first sight of one of these creatures. Pop a unicorn horn? Sanity goes back to 0, but the effects linger.

So you know, being driven insane is worse than dim; you are confused, your hit rate suffers, you damage suffers, your defense suffers, and your evasion suffers.

It's ridiculous, I'm beginning to think the only reliable way to complete Loyter's quest is to just nuke the whole damn thing.

Single-target spells, casting level 20:

Magic dart
Level 25
100% success
4d15 damage

Nether arrow
Level 8
79% success
4d12 damage

Chaos Eye
Level 2
67% success
4d11 damage

Dark Eye
Level 8
91% success
4d14 damage

Crystal Spear
Level 2
55% success
4d14 damage

My thoughts: pick a single-target spell other than magic dart, use it as your primary attack. Reserve bulk amounts of it from the mage guild, use it as often as you can - abandon melee and ranged physical attacks alike. The elemental spells (anything besides 'magic' element) tend to give debuffs as well as damage, so using chaos/nerve aganst major bosses would be a good way to finish them fast.

>> No.5910695

>>5910659

Dark Eye blinds, which is great for some enemies.

I still say to also use Magic Dart for regular enemies and to save on spell stocks. For example, when traveling overworld or for other fights.

Don't neglect your bolts, either. Line damage can be a life saver and a room clearer, especially if you use special element ones.

It may just be the autism talking, but I still like mastering as many spells as possible and holding as many spell stocks as I can so that I can whip out whatever is appropriate, and so that I don't run out.

The only reason I fire my gun is to level it up since it's a living weapon. I plan to turn it into a stat stick (and the ammo will be for time stop and special damage effects to supplement my magic, and for when I want or need to recharge mana).

>> No.5910703

>>5910659
Unfortunately, most of the "bosses" are very resistant to status effects.

While it isn't impossible to, say, silence <Red-Eyed Deceiver>, you would have better luck just brute-forcing it and killing her outright rather than fiddling with crippling status effects.

In some cases, however, you may need the status effect to win, an example being <Zeome, the False Prophet>. You blast him until he's under about 1/4th, and then try desperately to pin Silence on him so he can't just heal the damage.

Then pray you can take off the remainder while he suffers the effect.

I have never managed to pin Paralyze on any boss-level monster, or any <monster> or {monster}. Maybe it's just bad luck on my part, but I've never seen this.

>> No.5910708

>>5910695
I agree with what you say, but my intention is to pick one spell to hold above all actions including both spells and weapons - assuming you're playing a caster. Just have the mage guild reserve it, and use it against anything for which you don't specifically intend to use another attack.

The key idea is to put all of your regular training efforts into one place so it grows as powerful as possible. Having a nerve attack at level 30 and casting at level 30 would be a good way to kill the boss in a a level 30 dungeon.

>> No.5910716

>>5910703
My personal experience is that dedicated debuff spells (slow, silence, weaken) are useless, especialy when you need them, but that arrow/bolt attacks which *also* carry debuffs can be extremely helpful. I just got done fighting a <sky golem> in the arena and elemental arrows were working quite well.

>> No.5910731

Nerve Arrow is a boss spell. Disabling with long lasting paralysis on nearly everything.

The weirdest things resist it though so it can't replace magic arrow as a kill anything spell and it takes much longer to be able to learn it efficiantly then Fire/Ice/Lightning bolts.

>> No.5910741

>My personal experience is that dedicated debuff spells (slow, silence, weaken) are useless, especialy when you need them, but that arrow/bolt attacks which *also* carry debuffs can be extremely helpful.

Exactly. If you do damage, you may as well gamble for a debuff if you can.

Tip for newbies from someone who's been playing roguelikes for 15 years:

If you're going to be a mage, then you're going to want teleporting as well as anything that keeps enemies from reaching you. Consider choosing dimensional move as one of your feats.

>> No.5910764

>>5910741
Actually that's part of my plan (within reason.) Pick a debuff+damage spell, tell the mage guild to reserve that and that alone until you have 5000+ charges. Then use that spell as your magic missile so that it gains levels; this will cause it to end up with a 100% casting success rate as well as excellent damage.

When you use this spell on bosses you'll be casting it many times in rapid succession, thus ensuring eventual success even with a low chance.

Actually, the more stocks you currently have, the less you seem to get from repeated reading. I personally like to get to about 300 to 500 stocks for the spam-able spells and keep books somewhere. I'm thinking of using the 4-dimensional pocket once I reserve enough books for it and get a boatload of stocks. And more books to store inside it so I can replenish the spell as I use it. Because it consumes stamina, I'd read books until they can stack in similar charge stacks. Like if there's a 6 charge and a 7 charge book, I'd read the 7 charge one once to get a stack of 2 6 charge books. The other choice is to give my pets my book stacks and blankets to protect the books (which you should give to every pet anyway). Then I can just use the 4D pocket to store all of my other books and maybe even special situation rods and scrolls and potions if they can fit.

I REALLY wish the 14 item limit was removed from pets. My Golden Knight can hold well over 200 stone, but has barely over 100 held because of the limit. They should be limited by what their strength will allow, just like you.

That might be true for the beta, but seeing as how I'm still playing 1.16, it's not an issue for me.

And cargo trading is quite lucrative, as long as you buy all the cargo you possibly can and have an efficient trade route. The key is to not worry about being overburdened. My cargo limit is about 100 stones, but my usual load from cargo trading is 1200-1500 stones. The only problem with this is that you'll encounter rogue bosses a lot, but if you savescum or can fight or escape them, it isn't a problem. And it takes a lot longer to travel too, but as long as you have seven leagues and some other gear for traveling, it shouldn't hinder your progress too much.

Now I have a decent mount until I can get three blue capsule drags for the Kaneda Bike.

Eh. Frankly, he's a little underwhelming, and he's probably going to need prevent teleport equipment as well. As far as casters go, Exile or Spiral King are probably the best choices.

>he's probably going to need prevent teleport equipment as well.

Just leash him. You should be able to get a prevent teleport item for him anyway. Situations like yours are why I tend to save items with special effects even if they suck otherwise.

>As far as casters go, Exile or Spiral King are probably the best choices.

Yeah, but the Spiral King is definitely not a possible pet for low-level players, and you need to gain favor with and worship Itzpalt for Exile. I haven't even maxed out favor with Opatos yet because my faith skill isn't high enough yet. And my next god is Jure anyway.

Short of possibly wearing full spirit cloth end game gear hes still too squishy.

Theres no way to "tank" for your mage pets(monsters ignore you and attack them instead), so they need good evasion and armor they are toast.

Unfortunately the exile's evasion is what, level 8?

Your pets don't suffer from casting penalties. You can just load him up with adamantium and two tower shields. They can apparently get burdened though.

>> No.5916731

>>5916718
They can't. If they would get to that point, they simply say "Too heavy" and won't accept the gear.

>> No.5916749

>>5916731
That's "overweight" you're thinking of. They get a speed penalty for being burdened.

>> No.5916760

>>5916718
Most mage pets are trained to light armor, so you should keep their armor light no matter what, because that's where they get their best bonuses. A good example would be to use rubynus gear for most parts using DV oriented equipment.

>> No.5916795

Ok, so I have the Kill Kill Piano, and my <<Knight>> can equip it with all of its other gear (but the weight means I can't use its extra gear slots to hold stuff). Should I go for it? The alternative is the machine gun it's had for a while. It's using the <Arbalest> so it should offset the penalty to hit. I'll test it out anyway.

And before you say it, I'm keeping my bell at the bar. I don't plan to use it, at least for now.

>> No.5916804

>>5916760
Honestly gear can pretty much far surpass the the difference made by skill. And even then awesome DV and PV can still be managed with light armor. You just need to go for Griffon Scale and give a shield to it. A shield is a massive boost depending on the total PV.

>> No.5916832

>>5916804
Protip : Evasion skill, as far as i can tell anyway, gives a % bonus to your evade % based on DV.

Well, the suggestion for Griffon Scale is good. It's light, provides decent DV as well as PV, and on top of that, the Griffon Scale effect boosts the evasion skill. I say Griffon Scale is the way to go for caster pets if you can manage it.

>> No.5916855

>>5916843
Which is why the exile's evade % is not exactly high.

Not to mention grinding change material scrolls for griffon scale is rage inducing.

It took me over 150 tries with blessed change material scrolls to do it. For one item.

Yes, but training evasion for a pet is extremely difficult. The only time my pets ever got significant training for it were when they were surrounded by bubbles with contingency cast by a CNPC cheering.

I only had to summon a bunch of Asura type monsters and stand in front of them alone to train my evasion. I even purposely lowered my DV and PV so my armor skill could get trained.

>> No.5916898

>>5916866
Give your pet two heavy weapons and send it into the arena. That is, as long as they've still got worthwhile potential. Potential is a real bitch when trying to train pets...

And they train skills at the same rate as players apparently, but im not sure how much it costs for them to train skills once.

The biggest problem is they train random skills.
