http://noaneko.squares.net/dev/ for beta version 1.22 (known random crashing for some people, check with an unimportant character to see if it happens to you before making a full switch.)

A bunch of old moongate rooms and a few custom NPCs:

An archive of moongate rooms that holds about the 120 most recent moongate rooms which can be downloaded and then viewed at the show room:

Working on a few more packs, will start posting them in a few hours.

>> No.5890885

Getting started:

1: Controls and interface

Move around with the arrow keys or numeric keypad. You can interact with most objects by bumping into them, which includes attacking enemies. Glancing at the top of the screen you will see a list of windows you can open and their associated hotkeys.

2: Creating a character

Choose the "generate an adventurer" selection on the first screen, then it will ask you to pick a race - some easy choices would be golem for a melee character, or lich for a spellcaster.

3: Exploring the world

After creating a character you will be presented with an optional character, then left to yourself in your starting home cave. Upon exiting, you'll see a town right outside - this will be a good place to start. Not far away is a little dungeon on the map called Puppy Cave, this is an easy dungeon to start off in.

4: Making money

Before you dive headlong into adventuring you'll want to buy better gear. Early on your best source of revenue will be quests found inside towns; in the first town you see you can find a job board by walking straight down the road until you find a central area in the middle of the place - a board will be right there.

5: Building your power

EXP can be gained through almost any action, there is no need to rush into the toughest dungeon you can find. Skills grow through usage, and stats grow by using their associated skills. A good way to start would be by training your weapons and defense skills by entering wilderness maps and attacking whatever you see there.

Cool, I missed that because I was mostly copy-pasting from the last thread just to get a new one going after autosage. If I post another I'll scan the thread carefully for new packs.

>> No.5890909

Advanced play:

1: Becoming powerful

First and foremost, economize your potential gains. The way you spend platinum coins and skill bonus points can influence how powerful you are later. Skill points should be saved up for as long as you can manage, platinum coins should be focused on your most important skills to keep potential high.

2: Picking gear

The best equipment is what gives you good bonuses. Even if the regular offense/defense stats are weak, good perks can be an important boost to your abilities. This is how you can take down incredibly large numbers of superpowerful enemies that would seem impossible with mundane gear. The best perks are the ones that buff your chosen combat skills.

3: Efficient training

Focus your skill use, don't spread it around. If you intend to attack heavy bosses with a machine gun, then use firearms as much as possible. If you want to be a melee buff with great armor/dodge skills, then don't use ranged attacks except when you're sure you need them. Try to be as narrow as possible, if you're a mage then focus on specific spells so they gain levels.

4: Allies

Don't neglect pets. Pets can be multiplied, trained, upgraded with gene engineering, and equipped with the best gear you don't need for yourself. If you start early on by saving up sets of gear, when you start becoming able to catch high-end pets you can plan to build a strong back-up force. If you're a melee fighter get mages and shooters, if you're ranged then get tank pets that don't die easily.

5: Advanced dungeon strategy

Depending on how you've developed yourself, you'll need to find your own style of taking on difficult boss floors. If you're a mage you can create walls to form defensive choke points, if you're melee then you can hide behind corners so breath attacks can't reach you. Use the environment to minimize exposure to ranged attackers, teleport to escape big pileups of enemies and locate the boss as quickly as possible.

If all you want is pickpocket, don't join the thieves.

Here's a magic trick to get to the trainer:
You must have a rod of teleportation, a scroll of incognito (or a disguise kit), and obviously enough platinum to purchase the skills you want.

Teleport the guild guard who stands on the stairs. Go down the stairs. Use your incognito scroll or disguise kit so that the now hostile guild members are no longer hostile towards you. Get your skills from the trainer. Bail the scene.

Drinking from the toilet? What the fuck? Is it a dog skeleton?

I hate when my pets randomly eat or drink stuff. They drink from wells and make them dry up so I can't get wishes. They eat the rotten food I drop and then get status ailments. They take food drops I get from people when I'm in the middle of performing and unable to do anything.

I'm not using bells right now and they still do that. Annoying as hell. Especially the performing thing. I don't run into the other annoyances because I plan to avoid them.

Still, it would be nice to have some AI flexibility. Allow you to tweak their AI a bit, you know? Maybe introduce a spell or a special item that can recall and dismiss any of your selected pets at a given moment. Obviously an item that you need to grind to get, do a special difficult quest, or something. It would be worth getting, for sure. Reach town? Dismiss pets. Enter dungeon? Recall pets.

Maybe my idea is just silly. Being able to tweak their AI would be nice, though.

Make 1 or 2 throw-away characters just so that you get a feel for the game, and then play it seriously. You won't do very well in Elona (or most roguelikes, for that matter) until you learn the ins and outs of the game, and the best way to do that is to mess around for a while.

If you desperately need it to be an MMO or MUD, then you have problems. This is a rogue-like. Elona has the ability, as someone said, to broadcast and read death messages, and vote.

You can also enter "moongates", which take you to houses of players. They can have anything from rewarding monsters and summoning crystals to bring unique monsters from the moongate to your single player experience to death traps, general trolling, silliness, and just cool layouts.

There is a community aspect, but it's not the central focus, or even the best part of the game. If you like rogue-likes, you'll probably like Elona. If you don't know what a rogue-like is, or haven't played one, then why the hell haven't you played one yet?

Get NetHack, and stick with it until you're semi-competent. Rogue-likes are rough. Expect to die. A LOT. Especially when you start. After having some fun with NetHack and have dipped your toes in the rogue-like pool, go ahead and give Elona a try.

There are other rogue-likes you can use to try out the genre, too.

Yes, but it's a good intro to rogue-likes. In many ways, Elona is more rough than most rogue-likes. Just imagine trying to go through Elona holding strictly to the permadeath standard of rogue-likes. A standard rogue-like may be unforgiving, but you at least have a chance. With Elona, it's almost a given that you WILL die at some time just to train some skills, if not other things.

I recommend standard styled rogue-likes. Elona is a bit different. It's also still not completely balanced as far as I can tell (though still great to play).

I'm pretty okay with regular roguelikes. Almost ascended once in NH, got pretty deep into the CoC in ADOM, beat Omega 10-15 times.

I tried Elona twice and in both cases I went "holy fuck why can't I kill anything why is everything ten times more powerful than me what the fuck?"

Both NH and ADOM are merciless on people who go out of their way to do stupid things, but they have a significant part in the beginning where you can get your grips, familiarize yourself with the environment and not worry too much about being overwhelmed. I saw no such thing in Elona. The first mission I took in the starting town murdered the fuck out of me.

Then don't have monster balls, use gene engineering, or use pets. Keep in mind that some other rogue-likes also use pets. They're not necessary, but they're a good thing. The "heavy emphasis on pets" is all in your imagination due to the player base, who love working with their pets. In fact, the emphasis is more on a strong MC than pets.

If you don't like pets, just play without them. It's your loss. You might get a stronger character for it, too.

Look at the town board for easy quests, such as "Birthday", "I want it!" and "Going On A Picnic"
If you have the item or can buy it, that's a nice way to get easy money. Go for "Party Time!" if you have decent Performer and "Before It's Too Late" if you can get to the city in time

>Thieves' Hideout Lv2
Your pet can clean it by itself, when given starter equipment

>Puppy Cave Lv4
Has lots of weak monsters, but it's random generated so you can find some strong stuff sometimes

>Putty Attacks Lv6
This is NOT a starter quest, you'll find slimes and bubbles at the end of the cave. There's some equipment, furniture and herbs there protected only by putits, so you can easily get it. You can deal with the slimes and bubbles with a ranged weapon if they can't get to you

One of the miracle items was a skull bow and...what's up with the skull bow? I've only seen three so far and there's nothing good to write about their stats. This one was paper with 1d20-7, 15% pierce, -30 to hit. Blast it with a scroll to platinum and it's 1d24+10, -43 hit.

All rare treasure ball items were of miracle quality. One small medal. A ring mail that may or may not be an improvement over my shopkeeper's armor (## negotiation), and a cloak with 10 to constituion and ### evasion, cloth material.

And some gloves I found in a random dungeon run with stats somewhat appropriate for its name.

Hey guys, Indigo Child here.

After completing my current game, I feel like challenging myself more somehow.

That said, I want you to recommend a race and class, as well as certain "conditions" to follow. You roguelike fiends here might recognize them as "conducts", and I'll let you suggest a few of those well. Try to be creative, as I'll pick three from (hopefully) a pool of many that would seem most interesting to play with. I'll even roll the character before finishing, (and confirm which conducts I'll follow), but I won't start until after I finish my current game.

I'd wager I'm about 1/3rd complete with my current game, so it might still be a few days before I start a new character. (I'm not retiring the current character until the chaos gods are dead).

Only eat meat, and only human meat. That means no cargos of traveler's food. No nuts and leafs. No rations. Just human meat. You can't even eat other meats to gain stats.

If you use the suggestion for a Snail Tourist, tack on a one stone maximum weight limit per each gear (as long as it says one stone or less, it's fine - you can't guarantee under rounding like if you played as a fairy).

Another suggestion would be to never wear precious gear.

We traded shots for a while, I still can't even make a dent in his HP, and then when I've got about 75 HP left (his shots typically only do like 15~25 now), his <Rail Gun> triggered its invoke...dealing ridiculous damage. The actual amount was something like 1100-ish, since I went from 75 to -1078 after the blast. Fucking beastly, I don't even think superb resists would save me from that.

From the looks of your stats, Frisia would destroy you before you had a chance to really fight her, she's a Catgod so she has at least 500 speed, meaning she'll get a good 4 turns for every one of yours. Course, this really depends on what weapons she generated with, and how well your PV would hold up against her attacks.

>>5894049
Great job, but I'm assuming his gun didn't trigger its invoke. How many swings did it take for you to decapitate? I might go for a scythe insta-kill, but I still need to bump up my damage to bring his HP down enough for it to even work.

I might check out undeadgod, but if I recall it's a spellcaster and I typically don't fare well against any of those....

I've tried all three of them, the catgod is a no-go, she's just destroying me on sight. The undeadgod shouldn't be too hard if you got a stack of silence handy (which I don't). The machine one wasn't so bad for me, my whole party can tank the railgun 3-4 times before we're at critical health, and even then, with x3 paladin' lay hand/cheer, it's a pretty rigged defense. The tough part was when he got really low and started running around with 1 hp or so, started buffing himself like a mofo, and I can't finish him off for some reason. I was stuck at that point a few times until I actually went back to grab a scythe at home. I wrecked the daylight out of him with my trusty claymore, then changed to scythe last minute for the finishing blow. I actually started off the fight with a bottle of dye and a bottle of crim ale, but I don't think they were necessary.

Too bad it speeds up ether and wrecks my party faster than enemy wrecks them, otherwise I'd use it.

The pet can revive one of your other pets instantly when it dies once and it recharges everytime you sleep. The jewel is a reusable blessed healing rain scroll. The weapon invokes healing rain and holy veil a lot. Also she gives bonuses to cooking and anatomy which can help a lot in keeping you fed while in dungeons. Also healing bonus which makes you regen faster.

If you don't rely on pets that much though then consider Opatos. He gives bonuses to strength, constitution, shield, and weightlifting. All very useful dungeoneering skills. Also his pet can carry most loots that will just make you go overweight due to her max weight limit. His passive ability and treasure both reduce damage too making it easier to survive. The Gaia Hammer is just powerful.

So basically it's whether you depend on pets or not.

Also I just realized that I now have three weapons with #####+ critical hits. A staff, trident, and the Kill-Kill Piano. I went outside to see if I could hit anything despite being on a mount and the first thing I kill is a hermit crab with an unknown shell. Ok, now I definitely know you're a troll, but I'll bite anyway.

No story? There is a story, actually. That you're too incompetent to figure this out shows your idiocy.

No structure? The biggest part of this game is the structure of the game's system. It's incredibly rich and deep, and offers far more meta-gaming depth than most games (and almost all rogue-likes share this depth).

I'll grant you graphics, but compared to the rogue-like standard (not counting graphical front-ends which are essentially mods), the graphics are amazing.

You're the kind of fucker who thinks Fallout 3 is the best Fallout because it's in 3D modern graphics. You're the kind of kid who can't stand Tetris because it isn't all flashy and shit. You're the kind of jackass who can't play D&D because there are no graphics (except in character/monster art - not counting people who make their own graphics for use in campaigns).

Easier escort quests with long deadlines are great, since I can take the escorts into low-level hunting quests to kill everything for me.

No conducts have been broken yet, but I've been considering breaking one; specifically, being an atheist. If I did, I'd worship Ehekatl. (Ehekatl's School of Magic would be pretty handy, actually, everything else would just be a nice bonus.)

Both skills have been obtained, now it's just a matter of getting them up, as well as getting Magic up for some MP.

In the meantime, I've been defending myself against the small-time enemies with rods and potion-throwing, what little of those I can get.

Lots and lots of deaths, and because I always refuse to pay rogue bands, they're a death sentence unless I manage to keep scrolls of teleport around.

This is the hardest part of the game; once it gets going, gets a few spells and some MP, things will become much easier. But another level of "fuck you"-ery will occur when it hits level 6; tax payments are going to take every dime I don't have.

Yep, elona/user. Paladin doesn't come in scroll of ally since she's an NPC, but most of them can be gotten with scroll of ally. You can find her in a lot of the harder dungeons, but I don't recommend going head on for her unless you are willing to use up a level 25+ ball or got good domination spell/rod. Just use monster ball to capture one of the lower levels "user" pets, and opening it might give her instead. Other pets might be sold at slave master, like the rich girl on putit/with putit, or horse master, like the white wolf. They can also be found randomly on maps or dungeons, like little girl, fallen knight, etc etc.

Indigo Child is a Catsister Farmer and she rapes face. Catsisters lean towards spellcasting (in stats, I wouldn't know about their AI, never had a catsister pet) but they can do alright with ranged combat too, especially with their 200 base speed. Melee combat would be bad for them as they have a base 30 life, but with careful play it's possible.

I seem to have hit a snag with Snail Tourist. I'm broke, no rods or scrolls, and I have tax payments due. It can just *barely* cast Magic Missile (exactly enough MP for one shot). Literacy is still low, I only managed to read the book twice out of 4 charges, giving me a small stock to work with.

The problem? Only bats die in one shot, and just barely at that.

The "fairy-level equipment" conduct means pretty much nothing at this point; snails only get a back, ranged and ammo slots anyway, and I've barred myself from using ranged weapons anyway (I'll still equip them for stats, and I'll stick with the conduct on this one).

Still, it's been pretty rough-going, especially with tax payments sapping my income. 25 base speed isn't as big a hurdle as I thought it'd be, at least on the overworld. I can still go from Vernis to Palmia in just a few hours more than 4 days, more than enough for reasonable Escort quests (and the rare Before it's too late! quests).

This will take some time...

I remember finding lots of these during Harvest quests

You can drop one in the Vernis Hideout and keep it as long as you don't go inside with another one
This way you can keep the best one and turn the other into an miracle amulet

An Artifact won't transform as long as you and your party don't carry two at a time. If your pet has a precious artifact and you pick the same one up the one you pick up will transform. It's entirely fine to put two of the same artifact in one area as long as you don't hold them at the same time.

Just found this on a traveling trader, and for just 60k gold!
A great staff before I can get the unique one off of Issizzle, and once I do it will be a great dual-wield combo for SUPER spells (if the enhancement stacks, that is - not too sure about that one, but it should stack).

It's just one person posting, and no one is saying you have to use them.

They are the custom made pets, imo most people just use the ones with the sprites they like and not the ones with inanely powerful stats.
It is not really a big deal either way, it isn't like your game will be affected if they break theirs. Plus the saves people the trouble of going through the pets one by one themselves.
Sides, at the end of the day if someone really wanted an inanely powerful pet they could just make one themselves, the game lets you make your own custom NPC and there is a guide floating about I think.

BTW that reminds me, would the guy who made that green troll pet before post it if he would like me to add it to the list.

Can't decide what feats to get next. Maxed on speed/luck buffs. Got the teleport but I wizard hard so it feels wasted. Only Hypnotism looks like it might be practical‚ for pickpocketing. Was thinking Distance Runner just because I'm sick of Resting but apparently the +stamina doesn't scale. I guess there's +MP...

>>5902868
Do want. Stacks‚ as I know. Just test it and watch buff durations. Likely worth the reduced %cast cap.

So, what are good recommendations for low-level pets? I'm level 10 right now, and bought a custom NPC that happened to be for sale. (I downloaded the first of those 20 or so CNPC packs.)

It turns out "Rich girl and the puchi" is pretty terrible for a lvl ~10 pet. she rarely attacks and spends all day buffing herself. At least she looks cute...

This is whats important. Just leave her at your house and program her to say cute things so when you go home to cycle loot/meet visitors/get biweekly pay she can say something cute and you can go "aww!" before leaving to take on more dungeons.

>> No.5903378

You do realize that you undid your work more than you'd helped, right?

All those deaths eat your stats/skills pretty hard; you're probably far weaker overall now than when you started "training".

If you aren't very tuff yet, I'd strongly recommend a reroll.

He's probably under lv 6. He doesn't lose stats until he is 6. Besides, if you can die to putit when you are over lv 6, you should start a new character.

>> No.5903421

>>5903378

A lot of people train evasion (and possibly the light/medium/heavy armor per spawn equip) and other defensive skills, and stats by just passing time with the putits at the very start of the game in the tutorial. Since there's no penalty for death until level six, this is no problem at all.

Honestly, I don't know how you didn't see what he was doing. Seems pretty stupid on your part.

Anyways, I'm having trouble keeping my younger catsister alive. I've spliced her Greater Evasion and decked her out in light armor, but her low health means any caster spells instant death unless I can get to it and grab aggro before she does. And that sometimes won't wore on bolts/balls... Who else is using the diary catsister? How do you keep her alive?

Give your enemies more options. My team is a little girl, a younger sister, a young lady, a younger cat sister, my horse, and a bell. It makes monsters ganging up on a single one of your pets less likely. Also carry around healing rain scrolls to use when things get hairy and potions to give to them.

My strategy for the most part in keeping them alive is to be the one who goes for the more threatening monsters first. I also cast cheer first before fighting anything tough particularly. It works well for the most part. If they get low on HP I use my Jure gemstone.
