Here's the deal, /jp/.

Considering the frightening lack of maid cafes in the West, I've decided to try opening up my own maid cafe.

However, I need to see if such an option is actually financially viable, first. I get the feeling my results will be skewed asking here... But it's not like this fits anywhere else.

Maid Cafes are not a viable business. They are just a fetish that can only operate in fetish places. Even just maids aren't a fetish as they have places with anime stereotype maids and others where you look up the maid's skirts.

The only place it will work is with slutty maids in some place like Los Vegas.

You could probably go to some southern United States and get some cheap mexican maids though.

I can't even imagine a place in Europe besides France where it would work. France is a huge weeaboo country though.

hat's a problem, yeah. I was thinking of immediately marketing it towards the general public as a sort of "high-class for middle-class" cafe, where, after a long day of office work, people can come to be treated like royalty, if only for an hour or two. How I market it is very important, I do believe.

I'd only start offering the otaku services openly (I'd have a "secret menu" ready for those who come who are very obviously otaku) once I get business stable.

Being a maid isn't just about wearing a maid outfit and carrying tea, you philistines.

It's about the smile when she brings it to you, the confidence with which she walks, how she gently grasps her dress to curtsy, her very ESSENCE should be that of a maid. You can't just dress up a cute girl and expect her to act like a real maid, not to a true connoisseur. Too many animes and cafes these days have had clumsy "maids", losing their composure and dropping their trays, maids which are trying hard to do their best, maids which are an insult to their own names. A maid should be perfect without trying, and float like a cloud across the room to offer service with a calm smile.

I'll visit your maid cafe, alright. I'll spit on the door, then I'll wash my hands of the place.

If you open it up in Sandusky, there is honestly almost no entertainment in there, and the food is all over priced anyway. You'd get tourist rush in summer, but you'd probably have to shut down in winter due to low business. Though honestly if you want to make it work, you'd have to cater to both genders (guessing you thought of this by the Buttler/Maid thing). I wouldn't doubt that you could turn a nice profit in summer, since people need food and a place to calm down after coasters, but again, it's dead in Winter. Unless you move next to the waterparks. I doubt a maid cafe (as an actual business) would work in America. They might be popular at anime cons, but that's different. Maid cafes work on "moe," rather than American-esque sex appeal, like Hooters. Nobody would go to a place with just cute girls in frilly maid costumes.

For the idea to work in America, it would have to be overly sexualized, and that would defeat the purpose entirely.

>> No.5871321

I'd strongly advise against it if you are serious. Regardless of how respectable it is, there will be drama about the sexualisation of women, even if you have butlers too, and in the end no-one will come because of the risk of being associated with it.

Judging by what OP has said before, I don't think he wants the traditional maid cafe where customers go in to just watch the maids, rather, he wants to create an environment where to customers can feel a class higher than what they are. Besides, think of the marketing gimmicks you can do with it. You could go there on a date to show how classy you clearly are (again, it would depend on the tone of the cafe), you could go there for birthday parties (for example, little girls may want to be treated like princesses, have a butler), you could go there to just feel better about yourself ("at least some one cares" a customer may think).
For the cafe to work, it can do most of what the Japanese cafes do, except instead of focusing on the servers (maid or butler), you'd be selling the experience. And hey, pending on the price you could be treated like "royalty" or whatever marketing phrase you want to use, for a while.
>>5871321
On the argument of the sexualization of women, the argument they usually use is that women are treated differently from their male co-workers, or there are no male co-workers. Having Butlers eliminates this, of course, the "appeal" of the uniforms would have to be roughly equal (you couldn't exactly have maids wear sling bikinis and the butlers wear suits.)
Of course, if OP was still here he could probably explain it better than me.

>> No.5871431

I think that your best bet on location would be in a Japantown. I don't think one could work in the US, period, unless it was tied in to somewhere that it'd be expected AND the food was good. If your food and coffee sucks then it likely WILL fail regardless of meidos. Very few startup restaurants survive for past a year or so; that is a commonly known thing. But once they get established, then they're likely good to go.

There's a Japantown in San Francisco (with a small one in San Jose, mostly because lots of nipponjin live there) and another one in LA, although SF's got the better one. Even so, granted, it's not that big.. they've got two malls and a few blocks worth of various little stores/bars/restaurants; Chinatown is at least 4x as big.

The reason I'm saying this is because when people are shopping at J-town, they are half-expecting to see some weird/interesting/quirky things, and a maid cafe would be just that. Where it would be precisely, I don't know... I did see a vacant space in one of the Japantown SF malls last time I was there though, (which was around mid July). It was near that bakery that makes fresh red bean paste buns (so good), which is a good location since it is near the entry and almost everyone will see it.

>5. If a maid cafe opened in your area, would you be willing to WORK in it as a maid/butler?
If you were crazy enough to open such an establishment, I would be crazy enough to be an ardent and dedicated employee, yeah. I've been looking for a job pretty relentlessly, actually, and anything to fill spare time is okay with me.

You might be better off trawling the nearest anime convention to you, though, OP, given the current standings.

Further, if you're going off what other people are saying, you might want to have the maids/butlers as a secondary or tertiary thing -- precisely how many people are you looking at having on staff? Menu offerings might be key.

Ok, so going from the logic that the "cafe" can't be overly sexual, and that people are going to come mainly for the experience, wouldn't it make more sense to pitch it as a dinner? This may just be me, but when I think of a cafe, I think of people talking amongst themselves with a laptop and a cup of coffee. More business then relaxation, and not that family oriented. However, if you pitch it as a dinner with "great service" or something to that effect, it may play better. This way, you can get customers who just want food. An alternative way of looking at it would be to keep with the aforementioned ideas (come for relaxation), but rather than it being a cafe (3 dollars for a dollar beverage, constant small charges), treat the model as that of a dinner/restaurant. I have a bit of experience in that field (running/setting one up) if OP wants it/returns). By the way, Captcha = Cornrow. Advancing Literature.
