You normally have to reinstall the operating system if you do that.
When you install an OS such as XP it registers all the hardware on the computer (HAL). It's like a safety measure so you can't go around stealing parts and using them. GPUs are not affected by this.

some old computer from 2005 with 2gb ram, a 1tb (and a 80gb) HDD, WinXP and a geforce 7800 gt.

I only play STG, RTS, 4x/TBS/RTT(of the lords of the realm/total war/sword of the stars variety), and (eastern)MMOs, so I haven't had a reason to upgrade beyond that. It can play Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance fine, so I'm happy.

Also most(all) of my games are single core anyway, so I'm sort of hesitant to get a dual/quad core if the individual cores are going to be slower than my single processor.(Also I don't have the money to waste on broken processors, so I'm not going to overclock anything)

You're not going to break shit with really mild overclocking and not going over stock voltage. Things break when you up the voltage and go for the HUGE OC numbers.

For example if I take my i7 930 at 2.8gHz and go for 3.06gHz I'm not risking a whole lot, yet I'm essentially getting an i7-950 for a third of the price. Going to 4.0gHz or something is where you start to risk breaking shit.
