It's okay. Mostly it's for people who are doing business, I think, but it gives a good amount of vocab. Not enough features to practice sentence structures, though, mostly just memorization of words and phrases. The kanji is also pretty limited.

Sentence structure is still difficult for me because I put a ton of time into smart.fm (about 905/2000 in the first core series) and not enough time into reading the grammar guide...

My advice is to really become comfortable with the grammar before expanding vocab too much, or else when you have to say / type something you'll know what you want to say but can't say it...it's frustrating.

I cant study grammar. If I have to look at grammar rules for more than 10 minutes, I will kill someone. For now, I just look up some grammar when I come across something I don't know, and continue. It has worked for reading at least...

I have a problem speaking and writing but honestly this was the first thing I've written since I started. I would hope it would sound a bit awkward.

Smart.fm is for vocabulary ONLY. Do not use it expecting to become good at grammar. It has example sentences that are grammatically correct, (most of the time), but it won't explain why they conjugated a verb a certain way, etc., so you're expected to know that.

I recommend starting with this series: http://smart.fm/series/3318

Feel free to skip the first 200 words, they are incredibly simple, the next 200 are also fairly simple but a bit more challenging. Step 3 and 4 will throw a shitload of complex, business/political related kanji at you...those steps are generally considered a cut off point between who really wants to learn and who doesn't.
