This entire idea of "/B/ IS ABOUT BEING INTERNET JERKS. NIGGERS LOL. OMG CP. LOOK AT HOW FAILINGLY OFFENSIVE I AM" destroyed the entire idea of /b/ and 4chan in general being whatever you make it to be. So instead of being the cool contained community site for sarcastic people who like anime it became the site where funny cat pictures came from and where people OUTRAGEOUS (i.e. overused, tired, unfunny) things.

/b/ was always a little bit stupid with image macros but the point was that it wasn't always about trying to be funny and that you could make a thread about anything and have full blown discussions. And yet, two years from now you'll whitewash the past and think about the time you spent on /jp/ when it "wasn't that bad yet" or some such.

It wouldn't feel like home without trolling. The balance between content and trolling just can't get completely out of whack. Biggest problem I have with /jp/ right now is that it's a little too slow, and it's too Touhou dominated. It's not even that I have a problem with Touhou, but it's not right that there are times when every thread on the front page is Touhou. Without variety this place is fucked. Oh, and on that note, fuck the faggots that are always trying their hardest to drive out Morning Musume or whatever the fuck their personal pet peeve is. Fuck you, /jp/ isn't /shityoulike/, deal with it faggots.

Heh, that's the silliest thing. No matter how bad it gets, it can only get worse from there, and yes, I now cherish moments that I believed to be shitty at the time. When this incarnation of /b/ first went to forced anonymous for an extended period of time, when Milhouse was the 1 millionth post on /a/, when the idea of "EPIC ANONYMOUS LEGION" began to take over: they all sucked, but I'd love to go back to those days now. So yes, two years from now, I know that I will remember this situation somewhat fondly.

Eh, I can deal with all the Touhou if it makes the board go any faster.

I agree with the Morning Musume thing though. They had they daily threads for a while without shitting up the rest of the board, kept their shit in one thread unless it reached autosage, etc. and then suddenly people started sagebombing because... I don't know, really.

I discovered japanese imageboards long before I even knew what an imageboard was or even was called. Don't recall how, but I landed here in early 2004 and being an anime person I landed in /a/. I've never set foot in /b/, by the way.

I don't know guys, I still think 4chan is the best place to be. I go to gamefaqs, neogaf, animeondvd and so on forums yet I've come to hate them more than the new 4chan. Why? Because at places like those where I'm trying to get AWAY from here, the shitty ancient (occassionally recent) memes and direct linking/speaking of 4chan is so blatant and overabundent it freaking sucks.

Funny how you made this thread on /jp/, "the board of newcomers." Judging from their post, most /jp/ers found 4chan a few months ago. Evidence of this is the fact that they no longer post on /a/.

I've been on /a/ for 3 years now; do you really think I would one day leave /a/ for a new board? What I mean by that is after you've been on /a/ for long enough time you'll become attached to it regardless if you like it or not. If /a/ was to become complete shit your maternal instincts would tell you to start saging more in a futile attempt to save the board. But I guess the average /jp/er doesn't have that bond nor do they have that maternal instinct.

Plus this board looks worse then /b/. You guys are true failures at life. I'm a Neet loser yet reading some of your threads make me facepalm. You guys have zero direction in your lifes. Your fandom is unhealthy. I might like Lucky Star or Gurren Lagann but I'll only talk about it for a few months before forgetting about it. It's on 4chanarchive.org under the "lots of bans" thread. That site is pretty shitty itself, since the idea of being an oldfag is that you remember threads, and then those that weren't on 4chan for some reason (no, not having sex with their girlfriends), they could request screencaps, which disappeared after awhile. It promoted a bonding amongst people that had seen the thread, and the newfags weren't in that bond until they had shared in the experience of being there for the original incarnation of a legendary thread which they could later talk about. These sites that explain everything for newfags trivializes these feelings, and makes 4chan a place to just laugh about the contemporary, not the legendary.

Very true, however the difference between then and now is in the meaning of the term "legendary". Since it was harder to archive, less things were actually deserving of the title, and it was an honor. Now, since archival sites are numerous, just about anything is declared "legendary" and "epic" when in reality it's mostly fail.

Case and point. 95% of all American anime fandom originated from Toonami. Toonami had shows like DBZ, Sailor Moon, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Rurouni Kenshin. To say the Naruto generation is inferior to ours is a laughable attempt at making yourself seem hardcore. Unless you grew up with Evangelion or Kurenai you have no right to criticize the Narutards. Also, about your futile attempt with Robotech. Robotech wasn't popular. Only a thousand people watched it hence the reason why it received the boot so fast. So even if you were one of the few who watched it, keep in mind that 95% of all Americans didn't see it. Meaning we grew up with Toonami's shounen bullshit as well. /a/ is not a secret tree club. Toonami was not the beginning of shitty dubs on American TV. I was watching heavily-edited Saiyan Saga episodes on network TV on Saturday mornings, waking up at like 6 AM everyday to watch Sailor Moon before going to school, not to mention Robotech/Voltron/Speed Racer before even that. Originally Toonami just took all that old shit we had seen before on network TV and threw it all together in a block. Of course DBZ really caught on and they started bringing over hits like Gundam Wing and Cowboy Bebop, but they didn't start shit. They just rode the wave at the right time. And what people started on has nothing at all to do with whether or not they're gigantic faggots that ruin /a/ or not. I'd like to think anyone of my era who cut their teeth on Robotech and Voltron isn't being a faggot in /a/ right now, but unfortunately they are. Your statement is not quite catch-all. My interest in Anime was residual from the time I spent in Saudi Arabia as a child (age 1-5). The only English kids shows on television were Barney, Samurai Pizza Cats and Dragon Ball. I was simply used to the animation style by the time I moved back to the States. That and when I was 7 or 8 I stumbled upon DBZ airing early Saturday mornings on WB. All pre-Toonami.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fansub

Early fansubs

Early or "traditional" fansubs were produced using analog video editing equipment. First, a copy of the original source material, called a raw was obtained. The most common raw source was a commercial laserdisc. However, a commercial VHS tape or even a homemade recording could be used as well, though that would entail a lower quality finished product. A translated script was then made to match the dialog of the raw video. The video script was then timed. Timing is the process of assigning a "start time" (Synch-Point) and "end time" for each line of subtitling; this determines how long a given subtitle would remain on the screen. Timing a script was usually done in conjunction with computer software designed specifically for that purpose. The person performing the timing would watch the source video and would assign the appearance, changing, and removal of the subtitle text using a computer. The two most popular programs used in this process were JACOsub (on the Commodore Amiga) and Substation Alpha (on MS Windows).

Protip: The only 2 shows on that list that had any effect was DBZ and Sailor moon. Hence the reason why DBZ is still airing nowadays. Hmm, if Robotech is as influential as you claim it is, why didn't Toonami ever put it back on in the 2000 - 2008 era? DBZ became the most popular show on cable for the kids and teen demographic. Which basically means it was one of the most popular shows on TV. Naruto is this generation's equivalent of DBZ.

DBZ may have been popular, but I don't think it lead people into anime in general. I remember the DBZ fanboys from when I was in school; I looked down on them for the idiots they were (just as they looked down on me for the ronery loser I was; not trying to claim superiority here). I'm even still in contact with a few of them; not one that I know of has any interest in anime now, and I can't imagine any of them on 4chan.
So it's not a problem, just as naruto isn't, *in itself*, a problem. The problem is fanboys who've seen nothing else coming here and fagging it up. I suspect this is part of a more general problem of "geek chic"; at the moment it's "cool" to be a bit geeky, and so people who aren't at all suited to "serious" anime will watch Naruto (because it's easy) and go "Oh hay I watch animu too, am I cool now?" Sadly I don't think there's much we can do except ride it out; within ten years the mainstream will have swung right away from geekiness again.
