No significant localization should be used if you hear the original language while reading. Outside of that, localize all you want as long as it is good. There are very good reasons why dub releases of titles have a different script then the subtitled released.

Also remember, the community you are translating for fucking wants honorifics (as evident by the MangaGamer landslide poll), so if you are being paid, you shouldn't be translating it how you fucking want, but rather should be translating for what your paying customers want.

Name one Jast or MG release that quality matches up to the better fantranslators.

Commercial releases have deadlines and are done for cash, so as long as it is "good enough" they don't give a shit, fan translations on the other hand have all the time in the world, and are being done out of a love of the original work. Perfection works better in a fan translation environment.

Yeah, no. They should be dropped from dub releases (since dub voice actors seem to have trouble pronouncing ANYTHING Japanese) but if you're translating a visual novel for a community that understands what honorifics mean and why they can enhance understanding of relationships, you fucking keep them in.

I don't think you know what that honorifics system encompasses, or how incredibly many aspects of Japanese and its expressions cannot be directly translated into English.
Pic related, it's how translations would look like if they'd actually let all the honorifics in.
Translators like to make up all kinds of excuses for leaving stuff as-is, but the real reason is always incompetence.
I've translated quite a bit of stuff between English, German and Japanese, and the only reason ever why I might decide to leave something in its original wording is when my vocabulary in the target language isn't developed enough to render it properly.

How would you, as someone clearly more competent than any other translator in the universe, translate a plot point based around how someone refers to someone else without resorting to retarded-sounding little terms of endearment?

Or, relatedly, how would you translate someone changing the way they refer to themselves, especially when this is a major part of their development?

At some point, you are going to have to rely on translation notes to explain some concept that simply cannot be translated adequately.

As for (the basic suffix-type) honorifics, it's only acceptable to use them because the community both understands and expects them. They're completely unacceptable in a professional work intended for mass consumption (you don't see honorifics in FF, for example), but when the target audience is a relatively small group of weeaboos, well...

>> No.5786265

>>5786113
>Translators like to make up all kinds of excuses for leaving stuff as-is, but the real reason is always incompetence.

A script should not be localize if you aren't localizing the full thing. Moogy makes a point about Japanese name order for example, however if you try to localize the name order, that will directly contradict what is heard. If you alter some names (give a nickname) for a localization of, yet a full name and an honorific is heard by the reader, that also is a direct contradiction for the reader. There are many localizations I love, and I do not want a literal translation in a localization, however when you are translating something but not dubbing it and just using the original voices, then you are not localizing it as far as the reader is concerned, you are just writing something that gives the meaning of what the reader hears in Japanese.

You can make all the arguments you want, as long as the English VN community overwhelmingly wants honorifics, then if you are a professional translator you should include them regardless of your personal opinions about them. MangaGamer include them because of a poll where 95% wanted them. Jast includes them in their titles as well (at least Family Project had them, I can't speak for more), and they wouldn't be if they thought it was bad for business. Persona 3 and 4 even had them in the fucking dub because of their target audience.

>Well then you could have made that more clear, couldn't you?
Dunno, I think I've been clear enough.

>how would you translate someone changing the way they refer to themselves, especially when this is a major part of their development?
Depends on the medium, on how important it actually is, and on which first-person pronouns are being substituted. For example, when the protagonist of a novel starts out referring to himself with the somewhat reserved 私/watashi but later switches to a word that implies a more intimate relationship, you might change the tense of the narration from past to present, or even the perspective from 3rd person to 1st person.
When a character uses an informal pronoun like 俺/ore, he could be written as using more contractions and generally more informal language. Of course, you need to know the target language well enough to pull this off without it getting ridiculous.

>translate a plot point based around how someone refers to someone else without resorting to retarded-sounding little terms of endearment?
That's even more situation dependent, not gonna get into it in any detail, but there's usually a way of getting around this without making everything sound retarded. When I simply can't find a good way of doing it, yeah, I throw the towel and go literal over liberal.

>>5786265
That's a good point. I was thinking mostly of manga and other written stuff with no audio, as that is what I translate most often.
Although if the goal is to reduce contradictions between what is heard and written, most jp→en translators are doing it wrong.
First thing that comes to mind is that most names are romanized using the Hepburn system, instead of writing each name in a way that makes sense phonetically. For example, しき is always transliterated as Shiki, but that's not how it sounds at all. The reader hears something that sounds more akin to Shki.

>> No.5786635

>>5786510
>yea when they get mail from some random guy asking how would they translate some shit they go and ask DA BIG BOSS OF ALL DA TRANSLATORS what to do. how silly of me to even suggest something like this

It is indeed the boss most of the time, take honorifics for example, most official translations these days (be it anime, games, manga, VNs, etc) tend to use honorifics for a script meant to be read with Japanese voice (subbed anime, eroge), decides based on the target audience and the specific of the story itself if there is no voice (manga), and not to use honorifics if there is an English voice (dubbed anime). There are of course exceptions (and this doesn't apply to anything translated a while ago), but the style is usually going to be directed by the boss, not the translator himself, so the professional translator isn't going to worry about it.

I generally agree with you, but here's an example that I don't think can be translated in English to convey all it's meaning without at lest TL note:
Gundam 00, first season (inb4 lolanimu). Up to this point Tieria has been referring to himself as 俺, then he has a breakdown and says something to effect of "俺わ。。。いえ、僕わ。。。いえ、私わ。。。" and then has a monologue in which he refers to himself as 私. I remembered this because gg translated this as "I am.. No, I am... No, I am..." which made no sense at all.

And as a native speaker of phonetic language (not Japanese, of course), I can say your argument about しき is a bit shaky - し here is basically a proclitic to き, just as す is to か in ですか, so just because it may sound merged with the following mora, it doesn't have to be reflected in writing, as that issue belongs to phonology, not orthography.

When people try to "translate honorifics" (and not a speaking style, just the honorifics themselves) they end up sounding awkward and terrible when spoken in English. Therefore, they should either be removed in most instances or kept in. This largely depends on both the target audience and the setting of the story.

If you were localizing, you'd do it on a case-by-case basis. I mean, you'd normally never call your boss or a teacher by their first name--you'd call them Mr. Whatever every time. Sensei is very close to the word professor, but unfortunately it doesn't apply to high school teachers.

Princesses would be called Your Highness instead of -sama. Senpai just wouldn't be translated--you'd convey the relationship through normal speech mannerisms instead of just that one word.

Localizing isn't super hard, but it is often something fans demand because they like the feeling of being an insider.

Translating honorifics would be stupid since there isn't an equivalent relationship/respect system in English, and omitting them because you can't would be retarded and would cheapen the script since we'd be missing out on the originally intended character relationships that they are meant for. There's a ton of shit you won't find an equivalent for from Japanese to English. That doesn't mean you just fucking give up and leave it as is. You find the next best thing. Almost half of which are either only being worked on at a crawling pace or the translation work itself is on a laughably low level and barely counts as a translation. After that you're left with like, ten projects. But then like half of those ten are just one-time translators, that's not what I would call regular translators. There's no guarantee that those will all finish either. I mean yeah you have like 5 projects from remaining from people with release records so you can count on them but come on. That's not an impressive amount.

Alright jaybee, I'm not very translation savvy, so please forgive me for a bit.

So I was checking the translation logs for Sumaga, and noticed something rather weird.
If we look at the logs @January 1st of 2009, the game was still at 14% of completion. However, one day before it got JAST'd, @July 5th of 2009, it was already 50% translated.

Considering Sumaga is a game with 80680 lines and 2.90MB of script, that's pretty fucking fast if you ask me. However, on the following day, JAST came in the scene, and things got a bit different.

On the next update, @July 7th of 2009, still at 50% the game was currently under JAST rights. All patches were removed and shit got kind of real. If we look at the same pattern and jump 6 months in the future, we get to the update @January 16th of 2010, where the game is currently at... 68%. Considering how the translating team got about 40% of the game done in the same time spam in the future, I was kind of baffled.
However, if we look now, another 6 months later, the translation is still at depressing 75%. That's even slower than it was before, and now they are theorically going to get paid for their work as the translantors or a licensed game. Why? Shouldn't it go even faster than when it was under the charge of amateur translators? I just don't get why it suddenly got so slow.

I'm no complaining or saying they should die or something. I'm already glad it's at least BEING translated, but if anyone knowledgeable of the visual novel translation scene could englight me a bit, that would be much appreciated.
