keeping your room dark is actually better for your eyes, The thing is, you have to keep your computer screen dark as well.
I recommend the theme "4chan dark minimal" for Stylish.
I've modified it a little on my machine, made the background a bit darker and added these lines:
img{opacity:0.5 !important}
img:hover{opacity: 1 !important}
(Pictures remain dark until you hover over them)
