A mix of music and the news. I listen to music whenever I can, of course with lyrics. I play the news whenever it's new or I can loop a bunch of it. Podcasts help too.

I never got this, and I have studied a few laguages at least.
I bet it's only the case for people who don't pay enough attention.
One should compare each and every sentence with the subtitles, break up the sentences in various ways (if you don't know how the grammar works) if necessary, and try to pin point how it's been translated.
You can't do that without subtitles, without subtitles all you have to go on is their words combined with what's happening on screen.

How did you learn your first language? With subtitles while your mother was like "dawww" and your father was like "come to papa"?

>> No.5765393

>>5764970
subtitles are a crutch that impedes your learning, and looking up a word you've only heard once in a dictionary actually makes it more easy to remember because you spend more time on it.

>> No.5765462

>>5764970
It's usually more efficient to learn by finding the answer yourself, than getting the answer first and then finding out why the answer was correct. That's why when you use flashcards, you try to guess the answer to the question side BEFORE you turn it around and confirm the answer.

But it's not like you can't learn from it at all as long as you focus on what's being said, it's just that you're forced to focus much more when you don't have subs.

>> No.5765481

No one learns a language by listening to adult-level audio which has a word they don't know every two seconds. If you don't know the vocabulary you have no chance of understanding. If you want to practice without subtitles, you need to go watch something more basic like chi's sweet home at first, then build up.

Subtitles are perfectly fine to use to enjoy the media you usually watch. You wouldn't gain anything from not using them if the material is too hard, and at least you'll practice picking out words and phrases here and there and getting used to the speed and sounds of the language.
