I suppose the lesson here is that if you wish to get an official partnership with a company that hates gaijin, then blatantly disregard and mock C&Ds and call the legal bluff, force yourself into a position where you have bargaining power with the original company (make a deal with us or we will just release your stuff for free anyways, look we already have), and eventually open talks once the company becomes desperate to stop your translation.

More likely one of bad ends or BAD ENDs.

1) Minori lures NNL into Japan for paperwork, then sues its members for intentional copyright infringement and circumvention of technological protection measures. NNL members get some years in jail and some millions yen of fines to pay for the rest of their lives. BAD END.

2) NNL manages to secure a deal where they pay relatively high percent from each sale but relatively low initial/minimal payment for licensing. But the shit still would not sell due to
a) ridiculously high price
b) braindead DRM
c) boycotting of minori for all the shit they have done
d) boycotting of NNL for all the trolling they have done
e) translation being not weabooish enough
f) lack of physical copies
g) zillion other reasons.
NNL goes bankrupt and has to pay initial licensing fee for the rest of their lives. BAD END.

3) Someone reports, just for trolling purpose, that NNL and minori sells child/school porn ( eden*/ef ) to some braindead authorities and/or media. minori gets a shitton of bad press both overseas and in Japan. No sane eroge company wants to see their games being localized in any way anymore. NNL goes to jail for the rest of their lives. BAD END.

4) NNL convinces minori to do simultaneous release of Tenshi no Nichiyoubi, gets all the materials for translation then leaks them online months before official Japanese release just for lulz. This puts the end to all the deals between eroge companies and fansub groups. NNL goes to jail for the rest of their lives for breaking NDA. BAD END.

5) BAD END #5: NICE BOAT, BAD END.

It isn't so shitty, really. There are tons of VNs released every year without stupid drama. Even the ones that have drama -- the drama is usually by fans (e.g. bitching about Witch Hunt being slow), not by the translation groups.

It's just when you think about VN translations, you only think about the couple cases of stupid drama, not the common case where everything works out mostly fine.

It's also due to the amount of work involved. The longer something is, the longer it takes, and the more likely drama is to occur. Fansubs are pathetically easy compared to translating VNs.
