Visual novels are not games. They are exactly what the name says: novels with some added pictures.

Some VNs have some interactivity in the form of choices. That is not nearly enough to make them a game. A game is some kind of a test of strategy or skill with established rules of its own, not a test of how long you can sit on your ass and nudge the scrollwheel of your mouse.

Some eroge are games. Like that old thing, Marble Cooking, that was just a puzzle game with H pictars. Totally a game. It could even be said that something like 3 Sisters' Story is an adventure game, even though it's really linear and restrictive.

But when you take something like FSN that has, what, one choice every 40 minutes of reading and call it a game, you're treading on thin ice. And non-interactive things like Higurashi are in no fucking way a game at all. That would be like calling Ten Little Niggers a game.

Technically, if you take a VN, and take out most of the text, and add in a fuckmillion choices, you will have the lowest form of an adventure game, a digital CYOA., so it's fair to say that they are relatives. But they are not the same thing or even similar.

An "adventure game" is something like Monkey Island. A "visual novel" is something like Clannad. A is not like B.

Hence why I put the quotes. You're not really giving a similar comparsion there because the Japanese don't seperate these games into seperate genres. Ever17 is an adventure game to them (or ADV for short).

I don't see why not anyways, as everything involves lots of story and tons of clicking. Sure the anime graphics might be different from what we're used to, but I don't really see cosmetic differences as enough to seperate these games. Same goes to the "WRPG" and "JRPG" nerds; they're all RPGs.

If no one mentioned it yet, ADV (or "adventure") style games are visual novels with text in a box usually at the bottom of the screen, while NVL (or "novel") style games are visual novels with text filling the entire screen (Umineko, FSN, etc.)
