Back in the late 90s, we ddi not have many home consoles available. They were very expensive, games did not really come, shit like that (ypu may have heard how the PS2 was only properly released a year ago).
So, we pretty much wasted time on arcades.
And teher were many SNK machines, particularly KoF.
Most other fighting games were a minority(apparently too expensive to get Tekken and SF).
So, you either played the usual shitty shooters with lightguns that became predictable and easy to memorize, or you played KoF.
Thus, KoF became the only competitive fighting game available.

They were a lot cheaper and you could hold multiple games on them.

Personally I enjoy both games but kof is a lot of bullshit especially since there's no damage scaling at all.

It was one of the few GOOD games available that you could play constantly and remain fresh.
KoF is not famous only in South America.
China, Hong Kong, Taiwan also play it a lot. And of course Japan, where the whole franchise has a steady following.
It never caught on much in the US though, nor attracted European crowd

I dont know what happened in other countries, but kof competed pretty directly to SF over here (mexico) in the early years, most people moved to kof cause its selling point was the fact you could run, roll and short hop. then suddenly everyone was already playing it.

Actuly now that you mentioned the European crowd, what fighting games do Europeans play the most? Im from Finland, where Arcades aren't that common like anywhere and there really dosen't seem to be a fighting community over here or really any large fighting community anywhere in Europe.

2k2 um is pretty much perfect in that regard though, although I do wish K'/Nameless were toned down a little.

Max Mode still requires meter.
Activating normally pretty much informs opponent to turtle, and activating it within a combo takes of 2 meters.
And silly juggling requires still cornering the opponent.
And the crazy combos still requite more the 4 bars.
Pulling such shit during a match is improbable. The problem was the glitches and infinites that required little build-up(like Angel's)

Guilty Gear, Blazblu and SF4 for Scandinavia. That is actuly a pretty good set of games. Well considering, Guilty Gear and Blazblu play the same due to been done by the same firm really isn't suprising for them to have the same following. Street Fighter 4 on the other hand is pretty worldwide due to popularity and being a good game. I do find the lack of Tekken disturbing in Scandinavia though but I guess you can't have everything you want.
