What was the big deal about metroids anyways? The space pirates and the federation were clamoring for these little bastards through out the whole series, yet I still don't see what's so great about a flying nuclei that rapes your face.

They can only be killed by fucking cold, are horribly efficient predators and have a great use as biological weapons.

They kill pretty much any life form (that DOESN'T have seventy thousand energy tanks) in the span of a few seconds, and are immune to any weaponry that isn't supercoolant. Even supercoolants have to be used in conjunction with high explosives in a very short time frame, and I doubt many people will have such things on-hand as rapidly as Samus has them.

Did I mention they kill things in seconds and can only be dislodged by explosives?

Again, the only aspect good about Fusion was having a Nemesis-esque Samus running around trying to rape you! Fuck the story, fuck Samus's inner monologue scenes, fuck the TWEEST, fuck the god awful game mechanics, fuck those fucking furry creatures that save your ass in the end, running from SA-X was all that mattered to me because that was what made the game tolerable IMO.

I actually like it a bit more than SM, mainly for the controls I'd say. They are less "smooth" I'd say but they feel so incredibly accurate, that's something I really love. I'm not really bothered by linearity either.
