Play official iRO sakray server. Better than any private shit and 40x exp and drop rate, card seller, job changer, etc. and it's run by people who are PAID to fix problems and issues. I've played there for months now. Better than buggy, shitty, GM spamming worthless shit, crashing bullshit private server.

because that is what I've seen so far in the beta/alpha. the combat speed up was great though.
i'm worried that they will do the same thing that they did with FFXI, since this is hardly an upgrade in anything other than graphics, but a much bigger mess to balance, which they fail at.

You're like the only person who did that, bro, which is why they never 'fixed' it. No one complained because it was fully customizable, and everyone did what they are supposed to and took advantage of that to make it where they could easily and comfortably play.

menu based targeting is still shit. I know no one that did not complain about it besides rabid FFXI fanboys. or people that were playing on the console and had no choice. this complaint was widespread and caused many people to quit before the age of WoW which had decent mouse based control.
it was bad enough that I had to use mods to make the game decently playable.
after promising that it was going to be fixed for 6+ years, to do the exact same thing in FFXIV is a slap in the face.

also, typing with a controller is terrible.
if they make the mouse control decent enough (targeting mobs, scroll wheel in interface, etc) many of the ex-FFXI people I know would be preordering it.

combat is better than wow, but so far SE is making the exact same mistake which caused them to lose many subscribers in FFXI - no communication whatsoever with the devs and the playerbase.

just look at the 'communication' in the alpha forums.

Play a good singleplayer game instead.

In fact, I'd even agree with that. WoW is pretty bad, but it's the best MMO on the market and by far. Enjoy your ass controls and your infinite amount of grinding in FFXI.

combat speed has to fit the game. for example, alpha vanguard had a combat system that was required to be slow or it would be too confusing.
FFXIV's combat is not complicated at all compared to alpha vanguard, pretty much the same depth as FFXI. The speed of alpha combat was painfully slow, to the point that some disciplines required pre-encounter buffs would take 50% of the time for the mob to be killed on normal mobs, or a good 5-10% on band mobs.
Beta combat is MUCH better, and is a good speed for strategy to matter while not being painful.
Game is a bit Lancer crazy right now though.

I'll be frank--the only reason I chose RO was because it's one of the few MMOs (aside from Mabinogi) that runs on my medium-level laptop. My desktop overheated and the power source blew. ;_;

I know a few people that did this because they thought it was more relaxing, and using a keyboard broke the flow. Don't ask me why.
I used a Gamepad+Keyboard, but sometimes using a Mouse+Keyboard has a better feel for the area especially if I was required to scan or focus on areas as ranged dps / support. The point is to have choice, especially after so many years of FFXI completely ignoring player feedback.
