There is no real problem with Key.
It's funny when it tries to be funny, touching when it tries to be touching.
It's never needlessly long, even Clannad is long not because it repeats shit a lot but simply because it has a lot of content and routes.

ONE is the only VN that I've read that I can't recommend to anybody, and Kanon looks like shit, too.

His female characters are more like helpless animals that need to be coddled than human beings.

Clannad doesn't look as bad in this area, but...

Nasu, on the other hand, has built an awesome setting, writes interesting stories, and many of his heroines are top tier.

And while Ryu07 suffers from pacing problems, ending fatigue, giving his characters amnesia, etc., he writes awesome characters, interesting settings, and interesting stories, too.

And I can't really say Ryuukishi writes awesome characters. Higurashi's cast was excellent, but Umineko's is terrible. Same with stories.

Ryu is the best at writing villains that I want to see redeemed. A lot of other Japanese writers could learn a lot from him here, I think, considering how common it is for them to fail miserably at creating sympathetic villains.

The parents are all pretty likable, too.

And all of the magical characters save for Bernkastel, but I'm waiting for them to get butchered by the end of the game reveal.

Not really. I just like Beatrice. Best thing to come out of the Battler X Beato pairing are Battler's snarky comments.

See, that's how you write a sympathetic villain, writers. You don't take some retarded unlikable douchebag with stupid motives and tell us to feel sorry for him for some half baked reason like "he's dutiful", "he's pathetic", or "he's retardedly misguided and stubborn". The thing that ultimately makes a villain sympathetic may boil down to that, but its the road there that counts. Every effectual sympathetic villain that comes to mind had me cheering for them to make it out okay just as much as I was cheering for the more likable good guys, if not more so. The most important things are that they're likable and in a position where the audience will cheer for them.

They've been stalling the 360 release of Tomoyo After while they continually milk CLANNAD by releasing it for the PS3. It's already on about 6 other consoles and has a bunch of PC versions.

Tomoyo After isn't popular, but they only care about profit. Hirameki approached them and they wanted something like 500k yen before they'd allow them to localize CLANNAD. In other words, no (or massive greed).

Clannad's done well for itself but I'm disappointed in their behaviour. Nitro+ shits all over them.
