Score system involves air bubbles. Like the UFO system. Bubbles spawn periodically at random locations on screen before floating around for X seconds, after which this disapear. This is happening at ALL times, including during dialouge and boss fights.
Instead of getting lives or bombs from the bubbles, you get air. If you run out of air, you drown, complete with a brief video.
Oh, the rage would be beyond measure.

Well if you think about it most touhou locations are where the person responsible for the incident is and the locations the player character passed along the way.

For EoSD you went to Remilia by going to her mansion and then I think an observatory room in her mansion. You beat up everyone along the way.

For PCB you went to Hakugyokurou to beat up Yuyuko and beat up everyone along the way.

Imperishable Night you went to Eientei to beat up Kaguya and Eirin. You beat up everyone along the way.

PoFV you went to Higan and beat up Komachi and everyone along the way, Shikieiki then promptly showed up and quite possibly beated you up.

MoF, follows this the straightest really since you're really going straight up a mountain just to beat up Kanako.

SA made the path a lot more interesting really. Into a cave, across a bridge, through a city, through a mansion which is usually a good enough place for the final battle but not this time, then through what used to be hell to get to the deepest part where Utsuho was located. And then you beat her up.

UFO changed it up a bit, your goal was treasure in the beginning, but then it turns out you had to beat some people up. And the path was pretty much just sky for the most part since the palanquin flys. It then took you to Hokkai where you then beat up Byakuren.

So basically you want to predict where the last battle takes place then figure out where the player characters would have to go through.

If we're going underwater it's going to be the player starting at the beach descending underwater going along the ocean floor and then some legendary underwater place.

With all the plot-chaining going on recently, I suspect the incident will start when Byakuren and co are flying around on their boat, and from their aerial view they spot something that nobody's ever noticed before, and Reimu investigates.

I'd actually really like a steampunk theme.
Things like Hisoutensoku and Magical Astronomy seem to show that ZUN is really fascinated by the progression of science and technology through the ages, and things like the Moriya nuclear revolution and the emergence of 'Spirit Photography' build up to that even further.

In fact, a technological setting with a mythical east-asian infusion would be gorgeous.

Not a prediction, but just something I'd like: another Phantasmagoria with 10-12.5 characters as well as some missing 6-8 ones and a surprise PC-98 one.

1: Makai. It's a logical outgrowth from UFO, plus it will be a guaranteed hit.

TIME TRAVEL PLOT

Touhous go back in time to Gensokyo a thousand years ago and meet really ancient Youkai that humanity has long forgotten.
Highlights include Loli Yukari as stage 4 boss, and stage 6 boss will be the original Hakurei maiden.

EX Boss will be far in the future, Reimu's great-great-grand-daughter. Mokou would be the casual mid-boss of the stage.

Be warned: Marisa and Reimu will undergo major changes in appearance, everyone else will cease to exist save for the oldest or most durable final/extra bosses.

HERE IS MY PREDICTION:

Stage 1: some small annoying thing which isn't related to the story, but is smacked around by the heroine for being in the way.

Stage 2: similar to 1, but standing in the way to the area where the incident is coming from.

Stage 3: now that the heroine has arrived at the scene of the incident, another boss approaches to prevent her from resolving it.

Stage 4: a boss appears that is not the one who caused the incident, but vaguely connected to it in some way and unwilling to let the heroine confront the one responsible for the events of the story.

Stage 5: before the herone can reach the one responsible for the internet, the servant and/or guardian attacks to protect her master. This character will end up being playable at some point.

Stage 6: The one responsible for the incident. She doesn't have anything against anyone, but she's being self-centered and causing annoying mischief so she must be struck down with epic fury.

Extra stage: creepy loli who is friend/family of the boss who's in charge of the place.

My prediction:

Something bad will happen, Reimu, Marisa and possibly one or two others will set out in no particular direction to solve it, on the way they will beat up two completely unrelated girls, one who actually knows whats going on and points them in the right direction, the friend of the final boss, the servant of the final boss, and the final boss herself.

They will then have tea together with said boss before reimu/marisa/whatever sets out to kick the final boss's rival and/or sister's ass for no particular reason.
