There's not necessarily any common gameplay elements from one indie game to the next, but they do tend to be shorter and smaller than the sort of thing you'd pay $50 or $60 for. It's not correct to call it a genre, but doing so for the purposes lumping cheap games that share similar production values together is... passable, I suppose.
