I'm sure one of the other obstacles to producing a VN is that really, a novel really only needs one person to be made, where as with a VN you need generally need other people to handle things such as coding, art, and music.
Also, need to have a computer for a VN where you can just stuff a paperback into your pocket/bag/whatever.
