New thread, previous thread here
>>5373355

Most of the scripts have been updated for 1.6, but there's a problem. The new version of the tools seem to break some files (see inpcube.txt - it only generates about 19 lines, whereas the previous version got around 290.). Not really sure what's going on there, but I'll continue to update the files that don't seem to be broken.

Actually, nevermind, that seems to be because I had already inserted text (since it's fine in the rar you posted). I should have done a clean installation of the game, my bad.

AoRF, would it be possible for you to allow a command line argument for your tools that would make it extract ALL text, not just any Japanese text? It probably won't be an issue unless the tools change again (so don't worry about it unless they do), but it would save me a lot of time.

Also, all of the files that were uploaded to TLWiki should be updated now (and most of them have new additions, so they will need to be gone over again). I also plan to have a few more scripts posted tonight.

Sorry to bother you again AoRF, but there seem to be some more issues.

First off, the first line of some scripts (inpcube.txt included) is not being inserted correctly. Second, any insertion of ee000.txt is causing a crash (atleast in Win7) on the third line in the script. I've even replaced the translated version with the original script, but it still crashes (albeit, there's still quite a possibility that I'm the one who's screwing up. Going to do a clean install again, and then try inserting only that file. I'll get back to you on it.)

Finally, would it be possible to change it so that there is not a linebreak at the end of every segment of text (for sentences that span multiple lines)? In some places it works fine, but in others it causes a huge waste of space and potentially forces text off the bottom of the text block. This is something we can work around if need be, but it would be great if we could keep the text wrapping in text while taking out the mandatory line break.

Looked over.

I have a bit of an issue with what Cube is saying over lines f7, 11e and 126 of eq000.txt. There's nothing wrong with translation, and is possibly a problem that'd be traced back to the writer, but Cube makes a bit of a cultural mistake here, there's nothing more "civilized" about saying housekeeper instead of butler. Given Cube's world, how about translating 執事 as "steward" just this time? It's a sufficiently obsolete term to warrant his comment while still talking about the same role.

The problem is that it will then extract a whole lot more lines that have nothing to with game text. After some testing I came to conclusion that Only extracting Japanese text is the best solution. You have two options: 1 - copy Mev directory somewhere and replace the one in game directory with it when you need to extract scripts; 2 - install perl, remove line EXE=1 in bat file (this will cause to use .pl files instead of exes I generated for people who don't have perl (this is actually what weighs 14MB; everything else is less than 10kb of text)), and change line 99 in decode-bbn.pl from /[\p{Han}\p{Katakana}\p{Hiragana}]/ to /[a-zA-Z0-9\p{Han}\p{Katakana}\p{Hiragana}]/; but beware that it will introduce a lot of unnecessary things to scripts.

About lines not inserting correctly, could you provide a more-or-less dimple way to reproduce the problem? I was free as bird last week, but not now.

About line breaks, I'm not sure what you mean. Are you talking about this:

%% aaa %%
Very long line that spans 1.5 screens.

%% bbb %%%
Short line.

becoming this:

Very long line that spans
1.5 screens.
Short line.

?

If so, just put whole text into first line and leave the other one empty.

After mulling it over for like half an hour, I concluded that the best way to handle the "voluntarily" issue is to just chop it right off whenever it can't be replaced with "volunteered". When it's helping around the house or other tasks where she's helping someone else, it works, but there's no way to make it fit with individual tasks like studying.

The way it is used in the game it's very obvious that these are things she choses to do on her own, and no matter what the hell I tried to insert in those sentences (On her own/by herself/etc) they either sounded even more unnatural or added unnecesary ambiguity.

Also switched around the "free reign" thing in jiyuu.txt. You are just giving her the day off, "free reign" has a connotation of being given command of something significant.

>> No.5446976

>>5444867
>About lines not inserting correctly, could you provide a more-or-less dimple way to reproduce the problem? I was free as bird last week, but not now.

Assuming you mean simple, just take the contents of inpcube.txt, eq000.txt, or jiyuu.txt off the wiki, insert them, and start the game. Both of them occur very early on (inpcube is in the introduction, eq000.txt is the first script after you actually get into the game, and jiyuu.txt will occur the *second* time you attempt to give your daughter free time (Click on your daughter, click the third line, then when he gives you a choice, hit cancel. Then click on her and hit the third line again). All three of those will display the original first line instead of the translated version. Any subsequent lines in the files are inserted properly though.

As for the line break thing, I've already tried stuffing everything onto one line, and then commenting out the text of the other "parts" of the sentence, which works great, except that even without any actual text in them, it will force another line break.

>> No.5446990

>>5446976

So, let's say you have a sentence that spans two lines, and then another sentence that is supposed to display in the same box, it looks like this..

| [First part of sentence} [Second part |
| of sentence.]
| [Empty line] |
| [Second sentence] |

If the second sentence spans more than one line, it gets chopped off the bottem of the text box. Now, if you attempt to comment out the whole line entirely (including the %% whatever %%), then several different things can happen. It might display some text too early, cut off some letters in some lines, etc.

>> No.5447014

>>5446990
The "best" solution (I think) is if we could get rid of the mandatory line break in the engine (Which I realize that, if it's even possible, would be a lot of work - so please don't feel like I'm trying to force you to play around with it). Barring that, there are quite a few other ways we can work around it (or just let it stay like it it - it might not look great, but it works.)

Also, sorry guys, but I probably won't be posting any files today. I'll try to do a few late tonight if I can, but I can't promise anything.

I'm... not so sure about that, it could get pretty confusing. If the name she uses and the name displayed are always the same, people not keeping track of everyone's names would naturally assume they are ALL first names or ALL surnames.

I'd suggest using first name always for the character tags. In the case of those with whom she is in a first-name basis, there'd be no issue, and with those whom she calls by their surnames, the difference between what is used in dialogue and what appears in their tags should make it clear she is using their surnames.

It also prevents any issues if there are two characters who are related and she happens to call them both by their surnames (Having two characters with the same first name, on the other hand, is extremely rare in fiction).

Absolutely not, you're suggesting making up honorifics at times and hacking them off at others arbitrarily. And it doesn't solve the problem in the least, it's still a made-up criteria that other players wouldn't know about at all and would do nothing to solve any of the issues mentioned.

Initials are characteristic of forms, lists, and so on. Administrative paperwork basically. Middle-name initials are the exception, but these are nonexistent in Japanese (Unless you ask Chiaki Konaka). "Last-name initial + full first name" has that paperwork style that I think clashes with the purpose of the chat window, which is dialogue.

I think it looks ugly, to make it simple.

Also, chopping down to initials is a trademarked vestige of Ye Olde Console Game Translatione. There was a pretty good rant from the translator of Etrian Odyssey about how much he loathed it and scrambled to find ways to avoid it (EO had an annoyingly archaic character limit), and I agreed in every way.

Anyhow... seeing as you are the translator and pretty much the project's lifeblood, the final word is yours. This is my opinion.

And anyone who abuses their "authority" to do what they want doesn't deserve to have it in the first place. It would be foolish not to take other opinions into consideration, especially if they explain WHY their opinion is that way. Both of the points you raised are valid. The reason I would prefer going with an initial + first name is that atleast both names would be represented, even if they aren't both fully there. However, if it's going to make people feel off if they see an initial, for whatever the reason, it kind of defeats any reason for putting it there. The actual dialogue will actually show their full name when they are introduced, and it can be looked up later in her book.

Tricky~. I actually need to do some actual work for once.

1a9: Can you tell if this line is different from the other food budget ones for some reason? Like, if it has some meaning like "THIS month we'll only have to spend 2,500 yen"?

142, 148: I did some small changes there by moving a fragment to the line bellow. I'm still not sure of how much I can move in these scripts, so take a look and tell me if it's okay.

8e0: I think "educational" is fine actually, since they ones referring either to academic studies, teaching moral responsibility or teaching her to handle money (The effects on social life are a side-effect of these). So it's all "education", even if only one is academic. That said, I think it looks better as just policies, provided we retain the "educational" part in the lines that kickstart all this (aee, af4). I already did the changes.

91b: I haven't touched it yet because I'm not sure of it's used, but if I remember correctly, the Japanese just write down months as numbers, right? If we just change the numbers to January, February, etc, all we'd need to do in that line is chop off "month" and it'd would read "[x] arrives", as in "January arrives".

>> No.5485178

...Cont'd

9f6 a9e, 9f0, a98, etc. Well, crap. If I'm right, the junior high fragment is "9ea + 9f0 + 9f6 a9e" and the high school fragment is "a92 + a98 + 9f6 a9e" (9f6 a9e is used twice). This kind of screws over my intention of editing it to "we will need to rise her monthly allowance to XXXXYen" if the variable number is the middle phrase (9f0/a98). Again, not too sure how much we can toy with these, is it possible to change these to sets like:

-The young lady will enter junior high this month,
-so we will need to rise her monthly allowance to
-2000 yen

-The young lady will enter high school this month,
-so we will need to rise her monthly allowance to
-3000 yen

be9, bf5: I would need to see this in game to be sure, but if I'm right and one goes after the other ("In this way + it will change"), it seems like it'd be better to switch the lines around ("It will change + in this way").

In Japanese it would display like "1月になりました。" (As a side note, it would be closer to say "has become" than "arrives"). The problem is that I'm not sure if the 1-12 it uses is actually IN the script files or not, and it's difficult to search through the files for a specific number because they're all over the place. I personally suspect the numbers aren't in the script files, which is why I was having problems coming up with a replacement.

The number is actually part of the script for the 2nd part of each sentence. Probably the easiest way to deal with it is to just not use the third part (that's common to each [9f6 a9e]) and just write the full thing out in the first and second lines for both junior high and highschool.

For example, if we comment out 9f6 a9e, we could just split "The young lady will enter high school this month, so we will need to raise her allowance to 3000 yen." between a92 and a98, and then do the same with the junior high segment.

I'll need to look at it in-game, but I'm pretty sure that's right (although it doesn't contain any punctuation on the ending, which is kind of confusing). I would say to go ahead and make the change. If we later find out that it should be swapped around, we can make the change then.

Speaking of which...
@AoRF: Are you going to attempt to work on the text wrapping thing at all? If not, I might try to see if we can get someone who will test the scripts so we can identify when any of them are being cut off at the bottom of the dialogue box.

Gah. I'm really hoping you're mistaken on this one, because I'm pretty stuck otherwise. There's not much you can put after a lone number to signal months that would look good in English... I really don't want to resort to something idiotic like "[Number] month(s) have passed since the beginning of the year". Might as well just toss in a math problem while I'm at it.

Well, let's leave that for later then, maybe we can work something out if there's any way to figure where the numbers are stored or I may come up with something. I'll just keep mulling it over for now.

It comes up after you do the "Examine the area" option. So the text goes something like this:

Someone seems to have dropped something...
A worn out volume of manga
<whatever line f9 is>

All together, the last two bits would generally read something like "It was a worn out volume of manga...". The way we're given the line though makes it difficult to get that in English. We could do it the same way we did the allowance raise if you'd like. Just keep the "It was..." line commented out, and then change each of the item lines from:

"A worn out volume of manga"
To:
"It was a worn out volume of manga..." (and so on with the rest)

The short answer is no. I haven't been keeping track of the total KB finished as compared to the whole, but it definately won't be that soon. There are also quite a few pictures that will have to be gone through.

>>5511333
I glanced over it and it looks fine to me (albeit, I'm not really one to talk - I've mentioned multiple times since I started that we'll need someone who knows Japanese better than I do before its over). At this point, some of the POV stuff is mostly up to your best guess, because there's no way to tell who's speaking just from the script files (unless you can recognize their manner of speaking, such as for Cube). When stuff starts being tested we can fix those as needed.

I'll let you give it a second sweep before editing it myself. Please be careful with missing or untranslated chunks like in b81 and 82f. I can deal with punctuation and style, but anything that google translator/my half-assed experience can't puzzle out accurately is beyond me.

I've only just finished going through /talk/main.txt. I've got several things to note:

-It's okay to try and phrase things so as to convey the correct attitude, but if you can't figure out how to do it naturally, just leave it literal and leave a note explaining what it is that should be expressed and I'll handle it. I noted several points where the translation just had a pretty different feel than the original, mostly sounding a lot more elaborate in English even though she's clearly being curt and snappish (591 for instance). I can work these out by myself, but if this happens with a more complex sentence, I would have no way of knowing there is even an inconsistency to begin with.

-26d0:
What's the sound "フン" supposed to express? Because I know she's not saying the word "Fun" there.

I only took a glance at t01.txt, but pleeeeease don't use emoticons if there were none to begin with. See the first point, just leave me a note saying what should be expressed and I'll work something out. It's a lot easier for me to do this if I know what's been said and what is supposed to convey, as opposed to having to work it out from machine translations and an already tweaked sentence.

On ode/34.txt: the thing about the atmosphere is best looked over after seeing it in game. I'd need to see if she means it's creepy or tense or whatever.

ode/36.txt: In 199, I went with just "people". Like you said, audience sounds odd outside the theater, but they're definitely not "guests" either and moviegoers just sounds odd there. It doesn't take a genius to guess that a crowd lining up outside a movie theater is there to see a movie.

Greek, some notes on talk/t01:

266 eec: This is something I did on a guess, but it sounds more like Cube or the system is reporting on the result of your actions (Talking with her). These results tend to be immediate, thus I guessed that this is reporting on the result on a chat you had, not of a number of talks across a span of time. Does it actually say "recently" in there?

340: Are you sure she isn't just saying "I'm healthy, I don't want it"?

98d: Not a choice and there are no Cube lines near, so I'm guessing this is her speaking.

eb6: This one feels like a different version of be6/bf2, so the "about my teeth hurting" looks out of place (I don't think she's talking about something she previously said). Am I right to say that she's more or less saying "My teeth hurt, but it must be my imagination"?

Let me give you a rough idea: So far, we've worked on a bit more than 100 text files. Essentially all of these are about 3~5kb each.

Most of the files are on the 15kb average range. There's about 500 of those. There's a few on the 30/65kb range.

Then there's 491 postcard images needing translating and editing, and a lot of shorter ones too that I haven't counted.

Then there's whatever technical difficulties AoRF hasn't dealt with/discovered yet like the character input thing. Provided he hasn't vanished since he hasn't posted in several days (IF YOU'RE THERE, GIVE US A HEADS UP).

So, estimate? Don't hold your breath.

On 266 : 近頃=recently, nowadays. Perhaps he wants to say that you've been spending more time with her recently? Perhaps "these days" would fit better, and dumping more/some might make it sound better.

340: That sounds better, guess I overcomplicated the context.

98d: Your guess is as good as mine, we'll finalize it once we see it in-game.

eb6: No, the wording/syntax is different. If one were to transliterate it as it is, you would have something like "[my tooth hurts]->quoting, imagination surely is." You get the point. In-game screens will clear this out too.

In terms of merely text files themselves, we're at roughly 3.4%. That's NOT counting image translation/editing. I calculated it yesterday but didn't want to post it because I thought it might be a bit disheartening to hear. There also needs to be work done either on the engine due to the line breaking, or we'll need to test the inserted scripts and manually set up line breaks so that text does not get cut off.

The short version is that there's quite a bit left to do, but we're working on it slowly but surely. My time is rather limited over the summer compared to fall/winter/spring (is it odd that I actually have more time when I'm taking classes than when I'm working?), so hopefully it will speed up a bit in about a month. It should also speed up a bit with the Greek anon helping out too.

That aside, my only problem with continuing to just use threads is that we apparently have issues with keeping them active enough to not 404. I guess we can discuss some alternatives in the new thread whenever I get it posted.

Any word from AoRF? I'd really like to know if he's atleast going to attempt to work on the engine at all or if he's finished with it. I would like firstly to thank you very much because you are translating my favorite game to the English Language.
I played PM5 for so long that I had lost the hope to see it translated.
Since I am Italian (and I studied a little Japanese on my own during my first two college years) I had some troubles playing this game without the handbook or AGTH+translator.

I discovered your site yesterday and applied the patch downloadable from the site, then i manually inserted the missing .txt where they had to be.

But soon after i start the game, a lot of TEXTURE ERRORS appear (I can read texture in katakana inside the little error windows) and then the gameplay screws up and i have to restart the game.

What could it be?

I look forward to hearing from you and wish you could keep up this wonderful work.

Hello. I am the PM5 translation team's hacker. If you didn't screw up the patching process then the one at fault apparently is me. Please upload an archive somewhere with files that you added to default game installation so that I can reproduce and fix the problem.

>> No.5548451,12 [INTERNAL]

I only added the files from the bintools-1.1 archive.
In my opinion, the exe itself is wrongly coded, because after the texture errors appear and i click on the error window twice, the game goes on but the skill box (the one in the top right corner) is empty with the exception of the red bars and the characters' portraits vanishes.
The game is then playable again but every click it shows 2 texture errors.
If I save/reload continiously i can still play the game, but after a game week (every sunday, especially when i select "go to town") it breaks...

>> No.5548451,13 [INTERNAL]

Anyway I uploaded some screenshots.

Firstly, after I play for one game week, this is the first error:

http://img152.imageshack.us/i/sceen1.jpg/

then i click ok and this is the 2nd one:

http://img510.imageshack.us/i/screen2dt.jpg/

finally the game becomes like this:

http://img401.imageshack.us/i/screen3ui.jpg/

but if i now click, screens 1 and 2 appears again and so on.

I have to load back and play again, save, then shut down and reload and so on

I used the all-in patch available on the official site to bring the game to version 1.04

This morning I tried to start a new game and went on for a month without any problem.
Maybe the problem is in the savegame itself.

Wait a second, what patch? I was working with original unpatched version all this time and japanese speaking guys who are translating the game over there in wiki said they know nothing about patches. So, after you patched the game, I assume you rewrote the patched .exe with the one in bintools? This is a very possible cause for all your problems. Try playing the game without patching it to 1.04.

Oh come on don't be that way. There is no readme file in http://no-info.no-ip.info/pm5/princess-maker-5-bintools-1.1.rar.. You're talking about the old patch which is supposed to be used separately from new one (http://no-info.no-ip.info/pm5/princess-maker-5-tools-1.8.rar).). It doesn't replace anything except for .exe. It also adds dinput8.dll file and translations directory.

You really should try reinstalling the game and applying the patch properly.

I also saved and loaded and talked to your girl few times, and it never crashed.

>> No.5548451,22 [INTERNAL]

The patch I copied the readme from is the OFFICIAL patch from GAINAX to the game (http://www.princessmaker5.com/05_SPEC/_index.html))
This patch doesn't modify the exe, only the files i listed are substitued.

Anyway, now i'm confused, which one is the archive i need to extract in the directory? bintools1.1 or tools1.8?

I won't ask any more questions since I had you waste too much time, I'm sorry :)

>> No.5548451,23 [INTERNAL]

>>5548451,22
Well, no, you don't need to be sorry at all, I'm glad someone finally uses the patch. We do need testers after all. Problems you encounter will surely be encountered by other players and the earlier we start working on them, the earlier game will be in playable condition.

So, you need to use bintools1.1 patch. tools1.8 is the old one and is for research purposes only.

Anyway, replacing files with ones from official patch will very likely cause translated version to glitch. For now we only support unpatched game, and if there are no serious improvements to game in offical patch I'll be strongly against supporting it at all.

I tried installing and patching pm5 on ANOTHER pc (with windows xp), but the problem is still there, as soon as i save and then talk to daughter it semi-crashes.

the problem starts at line:
S [ 0] talk\main

and by the line:
L [ 0] 03c5 Whaaat, Mother?

the error has already happened :(

Anyway, just for curiosity, how did you reduce the size of the exe form 2mb to 800kb? Maybe the problem is there? (I tested on different machines and it seems strange that I am the first one to signal this problem)

>> No.5548451,25 [INTERNAL]

>>5548451,24
The 2MB executable is safe-disk protected. 800kb is without protection. This and translated main menu (at the top of the window) are the only differences between them, so code of game executable is completely the same in patched and original version. dinput8.dll is the only file making changes to gameplay, so if you just delete or rename it, the game should be working without problems (but untranslated).

I'll try installing fresh XP (I develop on windows 7 machine; I tested a 1.0 release on XP but not as thorough) in virtual machine and repeating the actions in your log there.
