What I meant to say is that the ability to manipulate boundaries isn't a level of ability at a particular point in a spectrum - it's a separate ability with its own spectrum of proficiency.
A better comparison than eyes and ears would be flight - animals with wings developed for flight have differing levels of the ability to fly, but they all have the ability of flight. Animals without wings do not.

As things are right now, there is no way Ran can aquire the ability to manipulate boundaries - nor most other special abilities, since several of them are bound entirely to the nature of their possessors. That would in effect allow her to do things she isn't actually capable of doing.
