Light novels. What has /jp/ been reading?

>> No.549783

Finished NHK just a day ago... now waiting for bakatsuki to translate a new chapter of ToraDora! ... to lazy to read my shana novels...

>> No.549791

I can understand manga, but why bother with light novels? Just go to the young adult section of Barnes and Noble.

>> No.549796

>>549791
Name me one of those novels that is as awesome as NHK.

>> No.549799

>>549791
Because Japanese authors have wonderful imaginations.

>> No.549807

>>549799
And Roald Dahl didn't.

>> No.549808

Because light novels are more weeaboo and going to Barnes & Noble would mean leaving the house.

Seriously though, I do read normal books, but also a few light novels from time to time.

Did I say I don't read any English books? I just happen to like the plots the Japanese craft even more.

>>549808
I buy light novels, I don't read shitty Baka-Tsuki Japanese->Chinese->English translations. Meaning I do get off my ass and go to Barnes and Noble.

>Did I say I don't read any English books? I just happen to like the plots the Japanese craft even more.
lol

that's like enjoying german food more than italian food

>Did I say I don't read any English books? I just happen to like the plots the Japanese craft even more.
My point is that at your age, you really shouldn't be reading young adult literature, regardless of national origin.

>> No.549851

I was joking, I buy my light novels as well.

>> No.549853

just started spice and wolf 5 today

>> No.549854

>>549848
I'm only 18.

>> No.549857

Kara no Kyoukai, Fate/Zero, Shakugan no Shana, Kino no Tabi...

>> No.549859

Sure i'd read book ... but wait all Croatian writers are utterly disgusting shitty writers.

>> No.549882

>>549848

Oh hey guess what? You can like what you like, regardless of age. Also you can read young adult novels without having to exclusively.

>> No.549909

>>549882
Of course you can. I'm just saying that it's kinda hard to dig them, because they are shallow and well... light. Reading is supposed to be at least somewhat intellectually stimulating, and light novels offer none of that, which I personally find disappointing. I'd much rather watch the animated versions of them, because at least TV is meant to be dumb.

Also, consider this for a moment: what would you think of a 19 year old who still seriously reads Goosebumps?

>> No.549914

>>549909
Read some of the Boogiepop series. Or the Missing series. Or Gosick. Or Welcome to the NHK. How the fuck are any of those like Goosebumps?

>> No.549917

>>549909

I'd think "At least he's not a literary elitist faggot, there's a chance I can talk to him without needing to punch him in the face."

>> No.549928

Mmm, light novels. It's good popcorn read, but nothing serious. One cannot read Faulkner and Pahlaniuk all the time, I'd personally go insane if I did that.

>> No.549936

Obviously light novels range in quality, but either way they're not legendary-quality literature; but that's expected. You don't generally read novels to read brilliant prose; you read them for plot and enjoyment. And some of them have pretty damn good plots.

Also, anyone who compares the Haruhi light novels with the anime should probably be drawn, quartered, and drowned in KyoAIDS.

>> No.549940

>>549909

Hey Dostoyevsky care for me to refill your goblet of fine burgundy?

Honestly I agree that light novels are far too glorified in the fandom but this would be the last angle I would approach from.

Interesting little discussion, but I believe a key point for an individual's stance on this might be the level of mastery one holds either Japanese versus English.

I plan to read the Haruhi Light Novels to practice my Moonspeak this coming fall (going to cram Kanji all summer). I see this as a valid use of the language to encourage proficiency. When reading in English, I'm all about the mile-thick books about various historical eras, classical social theories or current scientific paradigms. Yes I'm probably an elitist who loves to talk any particular heady topic all the way into the ground. I do so three times a day but only twice on Sunday. Unfortunately I don't think I know a single physics term in Japanese yet, and I think it'd serve more to confuse than improve if I attempted anything in Japanese that I would normally spend time on in English. Plus, a little childish enjoyment isn't wholly bad for the soul.

The Haruhi novels can get slightly complicated at times too... just watch Nagaru try to explain the basics of graph theory in Snow Mountain Syndrome.

I see what you are saying, but I still like them. I'm not really hardcore into them; they are just some light fun from time to time.

As for someone liking Goosebumps, I would think "That's kind of odd", so its understandable that others would feel the same about light novels.

You should hook up with a drawfag if you really deem your writing to be worthy.
I did some of those, too--but I found it to be quite unoriginal. Just like much of actual light novels.

There is plenty of literature that isn't too difficult to read. Poppy stuff like Murakami Haruki and Yoshimoto Banana comes to mind. They also write a lot of short stories, so it can be satisfying to actually finish stuff...

>One cannot read Faulkner and Pahlaniuk all the time

You behave like these two authors are actually high brow, they aren't, they are shitty, especially Palahiniuk.
