The characters have no depth to them, no complexity, and the story line itself is mediocre, at best. The "Servants", which are supposed to be amazing representations of ancient heroes' fame and legend are nothing more than normal human beings with super strength and the ability to use magic, but seem to have no 'wisdom' and lack any indication that they actually did live a full life before that earned their hero status.

The vast majority of servants in FSN do not have that same quality. Personally, I feel like the people who hate Sakura are the same people who hate Shinji from Eva (Yes, "/a/" oooh, I know, but bear with me), they're both very human characters thrown into situations so mind-blowingly out of their hands that they go into mental breakdowns. They aren't heroes, they aren't supermen, and they certainly aren't going to become one after years of the world relentlessly trying to convince them that they are shit. Sakura was the first character I could actually believe and understand in FS/N, and what's more, she made SHIROU into a likable character, a feat I didn't think could be possible after the last two routes.

And as for Kohaku, I liked her, but I found the whole "I guess I'll be a doll" thing pretty unbelievable. I had a lot of sympathy for her until the very end of Hisui's route.

Heaven's Feel was good because it was the only end in which Shirou's ideal was actually tested.

Archer and Kiritsigu both had to kill a hundred to save a thousand, but Shirou gets off easily every single time until Heaven's Feel.

Shirou wanted to save EVERYBODY, remember? That's easy unless, say, someone you care about, through no fault of her own, is a source of destruction. This simple contradiction would kill his ideal either way. So rather than compromising like his father and archer, he chooses to do everything he can to save everybody, which means valuing Sakura's life more highly.
Whining about Shirou having to make hard choices displays the same sort of foolish idealism that most people criticize him for having.

The only person Sakura kills after they realize she's the Shadow is Shinji, anyway so I'm not sure where the sacrificing hundreds of people comes from.

It's the same compromise that Kiritsugu had to make at the end of the 4th war. In a sea of fire, he could only save ONE person, Shirou. Everyone else was a lost cause, but so long as he could save a single person, he could be happy. Again, the world is a cold, heartless, terrible place, and people are going to die for no reason at all. If you want to be happy and sane in such a world, you have to learn that some people just can't be saved, that sometimes you just have to do what you can for the few you care about.

If that were the case, Saber would be a good king, seeing as she threw away her ability to care about people in order to save them.

It is impossible to save everyone. Shirou even acknowledges this when he recalls Kiritsugu giving him an example of a murderer, I think. How if you can only save the murderer, or the person he's about to kill, but you can't save both. How, by saving one life, you sentence another to damnation, so to speak.

Thus, logically, the ideal turns to "Save everyone that it is possible to save" which also has the hidden meaning of, "Save everyone that deserves saving", since you would not save the murderer and refuse to save the innocent and condemn him to death. This is UBW.

HF comes along and Shirou decides to save the murderer, spit on the innocent, and even dies for his sin of doing so in the "good" end.
